  1. VMP is good....they know what they are doing.

     

    Problem is.....they only have A/F ratio and timing to work with. They can advance the timing a tad for premium fuel only for 5-10 HP at top end, and can lean A/F a tad if it's slightly rich now. So very little gain is available, plus cost of hi octane fuel. Is it worth that to you? Plus cost of tune.

     

    Some tuners talk about taking out the throttle lag......meaning the throttle moves more for same foot action. But full throttle is still same full throttle. It may feel more responsive at part throttle (because you're giving it more throttle than before), but is not faster at full throttle. Getting full throttle on engine at less than full throttle on foot doesn't make the vehicle faster.

  2. The $25 price is just for Sirius radio. I just renewed for one year at $95. Which with Royalties and Florida taxes was more than $95. I was told it did not include Sirius Travel or weather. I'll see. Sync has weather, travel, and favorites (gives me stock quotes). Just go to syncmyride.com and set it up.

     

    Hopefully.....Sync or something similar will one day be all you need. Will have real time NAV, constantly updating, all live info, etc. Have another car with XM, and kinda tired of all these additional costs.

  3. 2012 3.5 Limited. 2 WD 18" wheels. 19-21 around town. 27-29 on highway at 65-70 MPH. Will usually average in the 27's on trips...that's wih some destination driving. I think the 3.5 does pretty good. I'm a careful driver, and never go over speed limit. I also drive for fuel economy.

     

    If you're not doing this good....slow down and check your driving style.

  4. I would still prefer a stock paper filter in a stock application for best drivability and engine life. Paper filters just filter the best. My training in building performance engines is the filter is not a "mod". It's job is to filter the air....period. You have a 3.7 L well designed passenger car engine designed with air intake path, intake valve size, exhaust valve size, cam profile, exhause system, 87 octane tune, etc, etc, etc, .....that makes 305 engine HP. Ford engineers designed and computed the filter box and filter panel size to flow enough air to support that HP. The tune.....from MAF sensor, IAT sensor, oxygen sensors, etc.....are tuned around the air flow characteristics of the stock paper filter. Fuel maps are designed around expected readings from those sensors.

     

    As long as the after market air filter does not overwhelm the sensors in the MAF meter, you will still probably get decent drivability. If air mass flow is greater than MAF sensor thinks it's reading, car runs too lean....not good, makes a couple more HP, feels a little sronger. But if the CPU is able, IE....air flow within what it can measure, it will soon "learn" what's going on, and bring A/F back to what is programed in the tune. (like it does in oposite direction when car wants to run rich from a super dirty filter....it leans it up). When A/F ratio gets put back to stock, those couple HP and improved FE go away.

     

    If you are going to use a filter that vastly out flows the stock filter, (not filtering as well causing more frequent oil changes and probably increased engine wear), and has the ability to support more than stock HP....why not make some mods and increase the HP a little. Get a custom tune, tune for hi octance fuel only. Larger intake air path. Deal with VVT somehow. Open up the exhaust system. Tune the car to utilize more air, and adjust the fuel maps to support the extra air. Otherwise....why waste your money on these hi flow filters? And....I've seen engine warranties voided from problems caused by filter oil migrating to MAF sensor wires. Usually from reoiling....usually not from the factory oiling on these after market filters.

     

    BTW....I've also used some of these washable filters. I don't think they filter as well as the oiled filters. Just my opinion....no tests to back up my opinion. At least they don't have oil to migrate to MAF sensor. They w/b good for custom situations, cold air kits, fabbed up intakes, etc, with sensitive electronics....where you change the oil often.... race car stuff.

    True....And I've spent a lot of time on dyno's switching back and forth between clean paper filters and clean K&N's.

     

    It takes about 600-700 Cu Ft per minute of free air to make 300 HP. Clean stock paper filters will usually provide that and a tad more. Drop in a clean K&N and it will flow a good bit more. On the dyno it will make a couple more HP immediately and run a tad leaner immediately....getting better fuel economy for a while......Until the cars computer notices car is running a tad leaner. Then it will ritchen A/F up some, and extra HP will go away and extra Fuel economy goes away. The extra power feel comes from the car temporarily running leaner, not because somehow a K&N makes more power. Lean makes more power....to a point then it burns a piston. I've seen 5-6 HP temporarily when going from dirty paper filter to cleam K&N....which is when most folks change to a different filter.

     

    K&N filters come in an amazing amount of different sizes and types. K&N's do work good for modified cars with modified air intake systems....blower cars as an example.....where stock system won't provide needed air flow, won't fit anyway usually, and is not sufficient for added power. A lot of the modified systems place filters where they pick more dirt and hot air causing shorter oil change intervals. However.....paper filters still filter the best and provide the longest engine life at normal oil change intervals. Without risk of filter oil migrating to MAF sensor wires and causing drivability issues. And gnerally, stock systems enclose the filter in a box, protecting it from engine heat and engine bay dirt, with a snorkel bringing in outside cooler air. Best advice from me....On a stock engine with stock air flow requirements.....just change out your paper filter every 10,000 miles or so for best stock engine performance....and that includes fuel economy.

  6. I finally got the snorkel off ! 8 just grabbed it and pushed down really hard on it. The snorkel piece came off the air filter housing but it did break. Just a little piece of plastic came off but the filter housing in intact. I decided to add a drop in K&N filter also and man can you hear this thing sucking air. Normal driving sounds the same but when you get on it , this thinjg sounds husky. E ven the wife noticed the difference in sound and she actually liked it. I also picked up about .8 mpg because our trips are 99% the same route and this was with some romps on the gas .

     

    8 MPG increase. You been drinking too much of the K&N cool aid. More noise yes. More dirt in engine....yes. Better MPG....No. Engine's CPU will put A/F the same as with stock filter.

  7. My 6 month trial subscription is up next week on Sirius in our 2012 Edge Limited with NAV. Currently been getting the "offers" in mail of 29.94 for 6 months and $95 for one year. Small print says these offers do not include Sirius Travel and Weather (which I never use), nor the royalty fees of about $1.40 month. And....after these offers expire, you automatically get billed the regular amount. And....they have your Visa card number....which I assume they use automatically. I don't want any auto billing with my Visa card.

     

    I really like Sirius....especially CNBC, CNN, NASCAR, "oldies" etc. But there is a limit to how much I will pay. Especially since I can get weather and traffic, and stock quotes, from Sync services. Turn by turn directions also....wonder if next car I won't even need NAV if I have Sync.

     

    Also have a 2012 Honda CRV with NAV. And XM (and Pandora if I knew how to use it). It's a much simpler system, in some ways I like it better, even though it's not in the same league tech wise with the more expensive Edge.

     

    Bought the CRV for me to drive and haul stuff, but wife likes the CRV better than the much nicer Edge, so....I now drive the Edge,,,,and want to taylor it to my likes. I like Sirius for about a $100 a year price for all the features in our cars.

     

    BTW.....Did the update. No problems at all with the car or MFT. My SD card gets bumped out sometimes when wife fumbles in arm rest, that is all. Don't know why they put the hazzard lights where I activate them sometimes. Otherwise....car is fine....wish it weighed about 500 lbs less and got better fuel economy with 3.5. It's pretty heavy for no bigger than it is on inside. My 2012 Honda CRV has slightly more interior volume, it's about 4-500 lbs lighter, feels about same performance wise, and gets about 30-35% better fuel economy. Understand a new more modern Edge coming soon....maybe 2014.

    Cut a few hundred lbs out of weight and add EB engine....plus current features and benefits....perfect driver for me.

  8. Pages 318 and 319 of the 2011 Edge owners manual:

     

    "Clean the instrument panel, interior trim, areas and cluster lens with a clean, damp, white cotton cloth, then use a clean and dry wihte cotton cloth to dry these areas."

     

    "Do not use household or glass cleaners as these may damage the finish of the instrument panel, interior trim and cluster lens."

     

    That is probably why Ford declined to repair the dash.

     

    You used Windex. It's for glass. Don't blame Ford. They go to considerable expense to print the owners manual....and so few read it. I see all these questions on here.....how to clean the seats, the dash, head liner. etc. When to change oil, what kind to use, how to rotate tires, all kinds of questions on here....and the answers are in the owners manual.

  9. Yeah mine is much improved. I do see some new streets but as I mentioned in another thread it also added a street that isn't there and hasn't been there for at least 20+ years. Also noticed I am not getting the red X over GPS indicating I am without signal but twice saw the icon jump off the road and travel parallel so I am not sure if they just removed this indicator or it was a little glitch in the graphics. One glitch I was able to repeat twice today, while navigating home in the same place when I make the turn it tells me to it starts to tell me the next turn then stops and says make a legal u turn, then goes back to teh next instruction. But I was never going the wrong way....very strange. Wonder if anyone is seeing anyting similar.

     

     

    I also have a question about Nav. Mine is working fine, but I wonder if map data is more current. Ford said we would be receiving updated map data, a better viewing experience, kinda implying more current maps, but not exactly saying that. etc, etc, etc, Is the data more current?

  10. So I posted earlier about how I was on MFT ver 2.11 and had no real issues. Got the update yesterday, finally bit the bullet and installed this morning with much trepidation. Left the car running in the driveway, followed the simple instructions, came back after about 45 minutes to a message saying "Installation Failure....either not enough memory or software not compatible with this version". So I pressed "OK"...however, the update seemed to have worked as my screens are all updated, I was able to re-sync my phone, and everything seems to be working, including Nav. Here is what syncmyride says about the install:

  11. That's what I did. When you click the link they email you to go see the report, click on "Update & customize and to the right side of that webpage is should show your your new version number.

    I wanted to "officialy" report the successful install so as to get the MFT warranty extended to 4 years (on Edge). So called the 800 # and reported the install, and lady said she would take care of it.

  12. I don't think you can compare an Edge to a CRV. Comparing similar trims.....the Edge costs a lot more, but has a lot more power and is nicer on inside and rides better. The 2012 CRV is much nicer than previous models, and may have more interior space than Edge, and I think CRV power is OK for most uses, and 2012 CRV fuel economy is much better than Edge, but it still won't work like an Edge. I don't think the Edge has a lot of usable storage space for hauling stuff either....even with seats down. Our Edge is more like a tall sedan wih hatchback.

     

    I would suggest you consider the Explorer. Lots more space inside than Edge. I really like our Edge, like it's features, like it's comfort, etc. but it's not very large inside. And V6 model not very economical, although it gets it's advertised MPG in our use. We think it drives like a luxury car. Nice! I use something else (Honda Element....much roomier) to go camping and haul our bikes.

     

    If you are going to tow....I would get the V6 with factory tow package.....which on a Ford is a lot more than just the hitch.

  13. Sorry if this is too basic....or maybe answer W/B obvious if I studied owners manual more closely.

     

    We have new 2012 Edge Limited with NAV. It's wife's car mostly. She only uses voice for phone, uses touch for other controls. Thinks it's just faster and simpler to do it that way. She's not particularly impressed with all these features....it's just a vehicle to her. She does think hands free phone is a nice safety feature. I'm the one who is impressed with the system.

     

    My question is about the NAV. I have a bean bag mounted (easy to stuff out of sight) portable Garmin Nuvi 750 I always used in the past. A model before free map updates, but does offer free POI updates. It has most featues of Edge unit....voice turn by turn, expanded intersections, etc. I did pay for one map update recently.....and before every trip, I update the Garmin POI's for new gas stations, restaurants, lodging, speed limit changes, the like. So my portable unit has excellent updated maps and most recent POI's. I understand we will soon have new map updates in our Edge, but how do you regularly update POI's? Especially lodging? If I go to lodging and make a motel a destination, would like to be sure it's recent data. That is feature I use a lot. Can you go to Sync my Ride with SD chip for updates, or are they automatically updated thru sync? Or Sirius? Is everything "live" except maps. We plan to keep the vehicle 4-5 years, and we plan to keep the subscriptions to Sirius and Synch up. Maybe even do a map update at some point thru dealership. I have XM in my vehicle, so maybe I can get a deal from Sirius/XM for both at same time. Appreciate your patience with this question.

  14. I purchased some McGard lug nuts, model 64029. For those who have installed aftermarket lug nuts; will these work properly? Are the lugs' overall length sufficient to adequately secure the wheel?

    And....Do they have the correct taper?

  15. Not surprised by your comments. Some of these aftermarket exhaust systems will make a few extra HP at high RPM on chassis dyno, and lose a few ft lbs Tq in low to mid range. So in a vehicle wih stock gearing, there is no real world performance improvement. Factories got it figured out pretty well for most uses. On a 500-700 HP V8 Mustang, I kinda like a nice exhaust sound also, but on a heavy Edge with low HP, I prefer quiet stock exhaust. No matter what you do to an Edge, it's not going to be a performance vehicle.
