  1. From what my dealer told me when I had mine replaced is that the seal acts like an umbrella in the way that it opens and seals. Apparently it can be very difficult to install correctly and that's part of the problem (though I'm sure faulty seals are also a big part). Because of the difficulty, my dealer has his most senior mechanic that's experienced with newer cars replace the seal. It was in the shop for 3 weeks because of the backorder but I've now had it back for 2 weeks and it's been great - I hope it did the trick!
  2. That's unfortunate, I had such great service from my Ford dealer here in Seattle. He thouroughly checked everything, diagnosed the problem and had his most senior mechanic make the repairs since the vehicle was so new. He called me every day with updates and put me in a good rental. They also did a 30 point inspection and gave it back to me washed and detailed. I am extremely happy with Bill Pierre Ford. From what I'm hearing from everyone else, I'm thankful I'm here in Seattle!
  3. My dealer only replaced the seal, not the entire PTU and it seems to be working fine. However, the seal itself is also on a national backorder and the dealer had my car for nearly three weeks. The reason you're noticing the smell in cold weather is because you're most likely using the heat. The fluid leaks and causes an odor which is then smelled through the vents. That's why using the circulating air function when the heat is on helps somewhat - but you're still likely to smell it.
  4. Just in the last month that I've been following this thread there have been several new people jumping up and saying they're experiencing the same symptoms, the worst part is they aren't all caused by the exact same issue. This is making me really nervous. I hope there isn't something integrally wrong with the Edge and that these things will work themselves out. Yikes!
  5. From what I'm reading some are the entire PTUs. Mine was just faulty seals thankfully. The service guy has been in constant contact with me and assures me they're simply waiting for parts. Forgive me for sounding like a layman, but it's some sort of an umbrella type seal - something that opens after placing it on. It wasn't done correctly at the factory and now they're waiting for a new one. He said they are easy to install incorrectly, but he hasn't seen any Edges in his particular shop yet with the same problem. Maybe it just hasn't been around quite long enough yet. Maybe we'll see a recall in 08??
  6. That sounds about how mine started. From what I've been hearing/reading, the leaks are really minor but still need fixing (obviously). Good luck to you!!
  7. Two weeks today and I'm still in my crappy rental. Parts are on a major backorder. How disappointing.
  8. Mgazak - this is EXACTLY the same thing that happened to mine. The smell had started to fade slightly but I took it in anyway. Turns out it was a leak in the transfer case which, as it turns out, is a common issue with '07 Edges. They've had it for nearly two weeks now but I'm hopefully getting it back on Monday. The parts were hard to get. Just an FYI.
  9. Mine is the exact same issue, and from what I've been reading, there are quite a few people with transfer case leaks on their Edges. Mine's been in the shop 3 days now and still no sign of the part. I suppose when you buy a new model car these are the kinds of kinks that need to be worked out. Maybe there will be a recall. Was yours the right front axel as well? Everyone told me not to buy a Ford but I wanted to buy American - I hope I'm not proving them all right. I do however still love my Edge, I just want it back!
  10. UPDATE: Just got a call from the mechanic. There's a leak in the transfer case at the front drive axel. He says it could be a few days before the part is in because it's such a new car and an odd issue. Great. God I hope this isn't the beginning of a long line of problems. I was so happy with my Edge!
  11. I just checked out that thread - seems like if it were a transmission fluid I would have seen the issue before now wouldn't I have?
  12. I just found the forum today while doing some googling and am now panicking. I bought my 2007 Edge in August and am around 10,000 miles. After the first oil change I started noticing this same burning smell and there is indeed smoke coming off the engine. I notice it mostly while idling and sometimes it goes away when I turn the air on circulate (as then I'm getting outside air in the cabin). I also noticed puddles of oil in my driveway but thought that it must have been someone parked in my driveway during the day while I was away as this couldn't be from my BRAND NEW car. Any updates for me? What did the dealer say? I'd appreciate ANY assistance - I'm taking mine in tomorrow. YIKES!
  13. This is scaring me. I'm on 10,000 miles with my 2007 Ford Edge (bought in August) and recently (right after the first oil change) started noticing puddles of oil under the car. I thought for sure that someone had parked in my driveway during the day as this COULDN'T be from my BRAND NEW car. Accompanying the puddles is a odd smell, almost oil like, definitely a chemical smell while idling after the car has been running for a bit, and also smoke rising from the engine. I'm going in for a check tomorrow (12/19). Oh boy.
