  1.

The answer is you may have one or two vehicles where you have to spend more than the warranty fee on repairs. But over the course of several vehicles the law of averages says you'll make it up and then some. You just have to be able to withstand the bad ones.

One exception I will point out - if you don't have enough cash or credit to pay for a large repair out of pocket (fixed income, etc.) then you should get the ESP but finance it with the vehicle so you're only paying a few dollars per month instead of a lump sum outlay for a repair.

If you really want to get the ESP go ahead - just understand that it's essentially a gamble and the house odds are against you winning. Don't do it thinking you're going to necessarily save money in the long run.

Also be aware that these ins companies will use absolutely every excuse in the book to keep from paying. If they refuse a claim, what can you do?

They know you will not sue them over a few hundred bucks.

  2. Yes My 2007 is at the dealer right now. The tube that lets condensation from the AC(that drip under the car when the AC

is on) is blocked. Thats the water you hear sloshing. In my case the water did some damage to a sensor or something and its

going to cost $500 to repair.

I have gap insurance(CNA) thru my local dealer but they refuse to pay for any WATER DAMAGE due to any blockage. They

say its in the contract. Needless to say its the last time I get an extended warrenty.

I think everyone should check this tube or have it checked every summer. Its just not something you think about, until its

    too late.

  3. No, it's not incredible luck. I've had the same thing. Only thing I've ever done to the cars is normal maintenance (most of it done myself)..I've only had one car that had a major failure after the standard warranty period. My list of cars (with approximate mileage):

1982 Omni traded in at 175,000 for the 93 Sundance

1985 Ramcharger - donated at 150,000. New transmission in at 49,000 (just before 50,000 warranty expired)

    1984 Suburban - sold with 150,000

    1993 Sundance - totaled in accident 75,000

    1995 E150 Conversion van - donated at 170,000

1995 Windstar - totaled in accident*. Had to pay out of pocket for head gasket failure. at 75,000

    1999 Caravan - donated at 160,000

2001 Ram pickup - donated at 125,000 (too expensive to keep on the road at 12MPG

    2005 Durango - current car 101,000

    2005 Neon - 125,000

    2013 Edge - current car

The only major repairs I've had on any of these were after 100,000 miles. The Omni should have had a main bearing seal replaced at around 160,000. It was blowing oil out when I ran, but I just kept putting a quart in every two-three weeks and changing the filters on it when I should do an oil change.

For all of the recent cars (1995+) The only things I've had to do that would have been covered by an extended warranty were:

Caravan had to replace sensor in transmission ~300.

    Windstar had blown headgasket ~1000

Neon had a leaking gas line that I fixed at ~14 for the part

Neon just had the water pump and the timing belt replaced for ~600. That was at 120,000.

The Ramcharger had the typical Dodge water pump that started seeping at 60,000. Again, I replaced at just the cost of the parts. Really nice to be able to climb into the engine compartment and work on it.

I would say that this kind of repair history is pretty typical. Otherwise the extended warranty companies would be out of business because they would be paying out more money then they were taking in. I don't have an MBA, but even to me that doesn't seem like a good business model.

*The mid-90's were not kind to me. I apparently had a target painted on a couple of cars because I kept getting hit while I was driving them. The Windstar was hit three times.

Yes it is luck. Akirby said "nary a repair". Then you list all the repairs you've had to do over the years. I know the warrenty is a gamble, but don't try to

tell this old guy if you maintain your car you won't have problems. Sometimes things break, like the AC for example.

  4. I, on the other hand, have had 7 vehicles kept 2-3 years past the warranty with nary a repair. If I had bought extended warranties I would have wasted over $10K.

The odds are never in your favor.

That is a run of incredible luck. If I were you I would knock on wood, then go gambling somewhere. That's what I do. 07 Edge 53,000 miles Zero problems
  5. My wifes car (2008 Edge ) came with Michelin Latitude Tour HP 245/60/R18 tires. Now after 43,000 they need to be replaced. I am leaning real hard toward the Michelin LTX-MS because I have had it on a different vehicle before and it comes in that size. I would appreciate some input from those that have tried this tire on the Edge or input on a different tire you have used.

    Thanks

I have had those on my 07 Edge for 3 months now. They are pretty quiet so far. They look like "snow tires" but are not. $1000 otd at the Ford dealer.

  6. I do not see a question or request for opinions from miguel2012 on his new Edge wheels, so I won't comment on them. I am reading into Opusnbill7's reply of "why?" that he does not seem to be a big fan of he look. Everyone has some tastes that differ from others, which is the way it should be. It would be an awfully dull world if we all liked the same things. My mantra when it comes to customizing your car, if you like the look of a certain mod on your car, you should do it. You're opinion is the only one that matters. I used to criticize cars that did not appeal to me, but as I became more wise through the years, This attitude began to change when the Pontiac Aztek came out. Everybody hated the look and the jokes were flying. I didn't care for the design either, but at least GM pushed the envelope attempting to bring back some creativity that had been missing for years prior. Yes it wasn't successful, but it did help to jump start other car makers to push their design limits as well. Before this epiphany of mine, I would joke and shake my head when seeing a kid's 10 year old Honda Civic he picked up for $1,800 now scraping up the pavement with his 22 inch spinners rubbing against his ears. The kid also chose to graft a decommissioned F-15 starboard wing flap onto his trunk lid. There's still times when I see a tricked out car and giggle a bit, but then I go on to think about how much fun that kid and his friends must have had installing the accessories and how proud he is of HIS own unique ride. I began noticing the driver's faces as they drove by, they all had the same grin I had when i would tweak my car's look. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see a smiling kid driving a blinged outrageously modded car, than a tight-@ss grumpy dude frowning down the road in a plain Jane, uninteresting, uninspiring, me-to stock sedan. Go ahead, be creative and do what makes you feel good!

Uh HELLO What part of the Op's "what you think" didn't you understand. Now take a chill pill and relax.

  7. I haven't run into this issue either.

I fill up at the same Shell station almost all the time. A couple of years ago I was having the same problem. Then

the station got new pumps and boom---problem solved.

  8. We bought this Edge for my wife back in October 2010, and I've given it a few decent cleanings since then but never really done a detailing, even a moderate one. Today I finally did, in preparation for a big trip out west in a few weeks.

    0. Prep with Turtle Wax bug and tar remover on grill, leading hood edge, mirrors, rocker panels

    1. Wash with blend of Armor All soap and Optimum No Rinse

    2. Clay bar

    3. Wash with Optimum No Rinse

    4. Apply Menzerna Power Lock paint sealant via Porter Cable polisher

    5. Vacuum

    6. Power wash all-weather mats with some dish soap

    5. Apply Meguiar's no-gloss interior trim cleaner/protectant and clean all interior surfaces

    6. Lexol leather cleaner

    7. Lexol leather conditioner

    8. Meguiar's tire dressing gel

So here she is, prettied up! Thought I should take pictures since my wife's car being this clean is a pretty rare sight.

Looks great But I get tired just thinking about all that work!!

  9. That's interesting! The Mich LTX-MS is the first one for me to consider. Like I said, I had them on a pick-up and loved them. How do the handle on the front wheel drive Edge?

They handle fine. I looked at alot of tire reviews online and they were 99% positive. The road noise I had was very noticable even on smooth interstate highway.

  10. Letting the car idle for 2 hours should do no harm, it is kinda hard on the AC but I wouldn't be surprised if even that wasn't affected. If everything went back to factory settings then the car lost batt power, I think there is a tsb for a lose batt cable/wire?

You say idling for 2 hours "SHOULD" do no harm. And you "WOULDN'T BE SURPRIZED" if the AC wasn't affected. Why take the chance?

  11. Hi all , new member here , I own a 2007 edge , and love it by the way . but have a quick question for you , i just got a text message from my wife who (as im typing this ) is sitting at the border waiting for almost 2 hrs now , she said the car just stalled for no reason , and had a hard time restarting it , Once it finally started she noticed all presets on radio , clock had been set back to factory , so im assuming she had a major power short which reset the computer ? Im wondering if it has something to do with it idling for a long period of time , Something getting to hot ?any ideas what would cause this, just got another text she said she had to hold the key on for quite awhile till it finally fired , and it sounded like it wanted to stall out again for about 4-5 sec then ran fine ? I actually work at the ford plant where we make the edge ,MKX , flex and MKT .and this is the first time ive heard of anything like this , any suggestions would be appreciated :)

You asked for suggestions. Here's mine. NEVER EVER let your car idle for 2 hrs. It can cause a lot of things to happen. And all of them are bad.
