I posted this on another Edge forum as well...my apologies to those who may have deja vu on this one :shades:
I took home a brand new 2008 Edge on Valentine's day. Have fallen in love with it...HOWEVER...
On Saturday we drove it somewhere in the morning and when we went to leave, the car would not turn over. The music was on, lights, etc, so it wasn't the battery. We called the dealership and someone came out and tried to jump start it (which didn't work and the guy agreed it was definitely not the battery).
I don't know if he was trying to get an error code, or what, but he kept turning the key (which made a clicking sound) and looking at the gauges. This made smoke come out of engine. The only thing we found was a small plastic cap that said 12v on it (it wasn't from the battery because all the pieces were there and it was too small to be that), but that wasn't hot to the touch or melted (terrible smell though!).
Anyway, they gave us a loner for the weekend and on Monday I called the dealership and was told by the service tech that it's a bad starter...never heard of a new car having this issue, but I guess it's possible the part was bad when it was built??? . I really love the vehicle so I'm hoping it's just a fluke and not a serious issue. I really can't think of another comparable vehicle I would choose as a replacement
