This was my first car. It's a 1972 Pontiac LeMans with a 400 CI and TH 400 tranny. It was my dads first car after he immigrated to NYC in 1970. He purchased the car brand new in 1972. It was given to me when I was 18. We still have it. Since then, the engine has been bored .030 over, original tranny has been rebuilt and beefed up, rear end was swapped out for a 3.73 locker and the car has been through a frame off restoration in 2003. Original odometer states 86,934 miles. The engine was rebuilt at roughly 78K. The paint will be refreshed this summer.

  2. Wizard, I will probably drive instead of taking the Auto Train. It has it's advantages but I do want to stop along the way down to visit with friends and family. I don't have a schedule to keep, as long as I am there for my first day of work. When I come back to NY to help my wife drive down ... I will probably be more inclined to take the auto train. She's not one to drive for long distances. She gets very restless. Being able to relax while someone else does the "driving" is a definite plus.

  3. Well, I got the job in Ft. Meyers, Florida so I will be moving. I will be putting on the tow hitch, trailer wiring and HD tranny cooler. I won't be towing my wife's Turbo bug. Company is paying for the moving company. I'm moving down first to get situated and then flying back afterwards to drive the bug down with the wifey. :victory: I will just drive my Edge down to sunny Florida!

  4. I just hit a deer with my 2008 ford edge this morning and my wife calls me in panic mode because she accidently hit the emergency flasher button and could not figure out how to turn it off.

Kinda like the time my wife couldn't figure out why the car kept dinging when she would take off from a stop. She never released the e-brake completely. Asked her if she noticed the brake light, she just responded with "What does it look like?" OY VEY!

  5. For those of you that have plastidipped your rims, how have they held up? Between road grit, salting during the winter ... what are your experiences? Have you touched them up due to normal use? I like the option of just peeling it away and restarting i just don't want to do it constantly.

It's too cold to do it her in NY but would be planning to do it once the temps are warmer.

  6. Mac, I tow with a purpose equipped truck as well. As far as the upgrades on the Edge, I would be doing it myself. We had a custom garage made at my dad's place with lifts. Hitch, wiring and Tranny cooler total will be below $300-350 range. Even if I didn't tow the wife's car, and had her follow me down, I would still do the towing upgrade for the weekend toys (jet skis).I'm pretty much going to do it, I just have to decide if I can take the stress of having her follow me down or just get a buddy to help me drive both cars down.

I cringe at the thought of hearing her complain about the long drive. :kookie:

  7. Since the OEM hitch is only a class 2, a class 3 would probably give me more peace of mind. I have been towing a 21' boat weighing 3700lbs (dry) for years with my Tahoe so yes, I understand the dynamics of towing. Overall, the expense of making my Edge more tow worthy won't be too much. I'd rather tow it than deal with the stress of having my wife follow me in her car. The hours of hearing the radio crackle with "slow down, I'm tired, I'm getting sleepy ... etc" would be worth avoiding ;)

Adding the towing upgrades would also allow me to tow some "toys" with the edge. I'm looking for more than just a single reason to add to the Edge. Thanks for your input!

  8. I have a 3.5 AWD without the towing package. IF a job venture pans out for me in Florida, I will have to tow my wife's 2012 VW Turbo Bug from Rockland County, NY to Ft. Meyers florida. I know I have to put on the tow hitch and 4 pin wiring. I was looking on line for tranny and oil cooler to address the added heat/strain while towing.

My wife's beetle's curb weight is about 2995 ibs. With that being said, have I covered all the bases for this potential tow of over 1200 miles? I know there is a setting to adjust for towing on the edge but I just want to make sure I covered all the bases for towing and not placing my Edge in a "bad place."

The only alternative is having my wife follow me in her beatle but I don't think she's looking forward to driving 20+ hrs, following me in her beetle. She's not really a highway driver. She will only do it if absolutely necessary.

BTW, her bug is a 6 speed manual, fwd. I was thinking of putting it up on a dolly and pulling it behind my AWD Edge.

  9. Unfortunately, when I purchased my 2014 Edge SE AWD, it was a "plain jane" but had the ford sync with it. I have been searching to see if I could upgrade and put in an after market camera and see if there is a video input in the stock non-myford touch head unit. I haven't been able to see if there is an auxillary video input so I decided to do a wireless system.

My first question is, "Where does the stock back up camera mount on our Ford Edges?" If I can get one that will fit in the stock location, that would be great. If not, I would have to get an aftermarket unit.

Send question is, "Has anyone modified the sunglass holder in the head liner (flip down compartment) to hold a video display like that of a small GPS or Video screen for one of these aftermarket camera systems?

I'm not keen on sticking the unit to the windshield or mounting it to the dash. I want to be able to hide it and keep it permanently mounted.

I was thinking of doing it with one of these ... post-31460-0-84999900-1424197715_thumb.jpg

  10. I'm sure cruise control and self control had a lot to do with the mileage. I'm sure if I romped on the accelerator from a light or drove aggressively, my mileage would be considerably lower. That being said, I am very happy with my purchase. Especially since it was an impulse buy, well ... kinda. It replaced my daily driver (fwd Impala) which was getting old. I gave that car to a family member that really needed it. :love_shower:

  11. Well, I just returned from a road trip to Chesapeake, Virginia from Rockland County, NY. It was a nice drive with a mix of highway and local drives. Heading down to Virginia, I took Route 13 and crossed the Chesapeake Bay bridge. For those of you that don't know, route 13 is a mix of highway speeds (55-65) and local speeds ranging from 35-55 mph and a lot of stop lights where the roads get into local "downtown"areas in Maryland and Delaware. Along with driving around, my total mileage was 819.5 miles.

I used a total of 33.56 gallons for the trip and averaged 24.3 MPG with mixed driving. Pretty good for a 3.5L AWD. BTW, the car is a 2014 SE AWD and only has 11,349.5 miles on the clock.

  12. When I got my Edge, my mom saw it and said ... "That's the car that Derek Jeter endorses!" Yes, she's a big Yankees fan. I left the edge with them for the first 2 weeks since I was going overseas for vacation. My edge has been called "Jeter" ever since. Once a car is named, I don't believe in changing the name especially if it's a woman that names it. Makes for bad vibes.

  13. Have you checked the seals around the lift gate? If these seals are cracked, damaged or just don't seal correctly, there can be exhaust intrusion. What you can also do is get a "smoke machine and turn on your ac (fresh air mode) on high, turn on the smoke machine till the car is full of smoke and go to the back of the truck and see where smoke is being forced out. It will come out of the air extractors since that is what they are designed for but if it comes out anywhere else, you have found your leak.

  14. I have a 2014 SE with AWD. Mixed driving will get me 17-19 mpg (depending on traffic) When I fuel up and reset to go on a drive to my parents house 74 miles away, I fill up at a gas station roughly 1/2 mile away from the highway. After resetting and taking my own mileage notes, I will get about 24.3 mpg. Pretty good and I am doing about 73 mph with cruise control on and a/c on. Not too far off from what the sticker says. My edge has almost 5K on the odometer.

If I get aggressive while driving, of course the mileage goes down but still hovers around 22mpg.

  15. Ok, after a beer and rethinking, I finally found them. On the passenger side, just to the right of the dust cap of the headlight bulb enclosure, there is a black part with a WHITE hex head. On the drivers side, it's to the left of the dust cap of the headlight enclosure.

Now all I have to do is wait for it to be dark enough to make the slight adjustment for the beams to be even. I will post pics when I can.

  16. I bought a 2014 Edge SE AWD in June and I love it! I didn't need all the bells and whistles but AWD was a necessity here in Rockland County, NY. When I first drove the car at night, I wasn't impressed with the headlight illumination so I knew I would be upgrading to HID. I went with the 35W unit from Xenonpro.com and made sure I purchased the warning cancel unit to avoid the hyper flashing. Install went pretty well. The hardest part was figuring out how to mount it where the original HID ballast should have gone. My only problem now is adjusting the headlights.

I went through the manual and tried to locate the hex head adjustment. The drawing in the manual doesn't really help. Has anyone adjusted their headlights on their edge? If you have, can you post a picture of where it is? For the life of me, I can't seem to find the hex head adjustment they are referring to.

    Thanks in advance!

  17. I bought my 2014 SE AWD in June. I didn't need all the bells and whistles. The only thing I wish I had was the rear camera.

The ride is nice. Some complain about the firmness and road noise, it's not too bad with the 18" wheels. The pickup surprised me. It has enough "get up and go" to satisfy me. All in all, if you keep things in perspective and remember that this is a cross over and the ride height will affect the handling, you won't be disappointed. I wasn't and am actually quite happy with the purchase. The only thing I upgraded were the lights. The original ones had to go so I upgraded to HID's and now I can finally see. One of the best purchases I made. All I have to do now is see how she will handle this winter in the snow.
