  1. You mean the grommet around the steering column? How did you fish the clothes hangar through? I picture myself under the car taping the wire to the hangar and then pulling the hanger back into the interior. Personally, if I can I would rather do it right. I suspect that we are not meant to be routing additional "one of" wires through the firewall and that was the idea behind running a set of wires through and breaking them out into a fuse panel inside the car. With spares for future use. I can't believe that if I were to bring my Edge into the dealer mechanic they would actually poke holes through the grommet to run these additional wires. But when I asked to see the instructions for their wiring kit that is exactly what they showed.
  2. I have read many topics on this forum related to the wiring of trailer electrical components (lights, brakes) and the consensus seems to be that you need to run a wire from the battery to the destination either under the car (to the back for lights) or through the firewall via the steering column to a brake controller. And even running the wire through the firewall into the interior and then along the side underneath the trim. My question is why can't I use the spare fuses in the interior fuse panel to power these things. This would save the need to find a way through the firewall. For example (2007 Edge), position 18 has a spare 20A fuse that could be used for the brake controller and I could potentially use the 10A spares in position 32 or 33. Is it very hard to attach a wire to these terminals? Has anyone out there looked into this? Or is my assumption incorrect that these spare fuse positions are already wired to the battery?
  3. Hey PSUFetch... I am going to do mine (finally) on the weekend. Did you consider running that power wire (to the brake controller) through the existing fuse panel under the hood (instead of buying your own circuit breaker)? Also, is there a need to run the neutral from the battery to the brake controller or can you just ground it to the frame somehow under the dash? Did you try to take up the trim pieces inside the car (to run the wire) and have a hard time with it? Is it really hard to pry those up? By the way, I thought your write-up was excellent.
  4. My 2007 edge has the same PTU issue... just adding my experience for completeness. Replaced the seal about 2 months ago and it is leaking again so I have an appointment to replace it next week. The dealer here says all they can do is replace the seal again, but I find that after reading this threat it is going to be a futile gesture.
  5. Haha... :yup: It is like heaven to me... that is my home town, Lumsden, SK, Canada. It is an acreage just outside of a nice little town in the Qu'appelle Valley. I just wanted to take a picture of the new hitch in action and it just so happened there was a nice rainbow in the background!
  6. Thank you... a nice color I think. To answer your questions: Yes, it does have a transmission cooler... if you check out this conversation, it might be that they all have these transmission coolers. The towing package extras are the bigger rad and the oil cooler as well as the 4 pin wiring in the back and the hitch. This may or may not cause a kerfuffle, but that trailer is 4500 lbs. Now before everyone get's excited here is my logic: 1. The vehicle has a tranny cooler which will ensure that it doesn't overheat; to verify this I am thinking of installing a transmission temperature guage so I will know for sure. 2. The owner's manual states that the maximum towing capacity of this vehicle is 3500 lbs, and that 'if you are towing a trailer over 3500 lbs you need a weight equalization system'. I have that system on the trailer which is acting to reduce the tongue weight of the trailer and spread the load over both axles. This dramatically stabilizes the system. 3. I am not worried about the engine overheating and blowing because the vehicle has a temperature guage and I will know immediately if this is happening. If I have an issue in this respect, I will go and get an aftermarket oil cooler installed. 4. I live on the prairies (Saskatchewan) so I don't haul this thing up a bunch of hills. I also don't haul with O/D on. Do I forsee any problems? I am slightly concerned about the tranny, but that will not stop me from towing the trailer. 2700 lbs? This thing could idle up a hill with 2700 lbs behind it. Seriously. I actually haven't installed the brake controller or the wiring, but I have the TOne harness, a 4-7 wire adapter, a brake controller, and a buddy who is an electrician! I don't know if it requires any splicing of the wires for the TOne harness, but I plan on following the directions (which you can see here). Note: it says no splicing required. Anyway, I will definitely post the results of my towing adventure. Luckily my Dad is a veteran towing these things around so I have help. -Bob
  7. I also installed a Curt hitch over the weekend. It was the one recommended in the first topic indicated below. However, I have a couple of notes: Right on! They came off so easily after I used the weasel piss that I was worried about them coming off after I rehung the exhaust. Not in my kit... all the bolts were the same size. This confused me a bit at first when the instructions talk about fishing these things through the holes in the frame (and it sounds like some are fishing it through the end of the frame. For one thing, my 2007 does not have any "access holes" in it big enough to fish the bolt and spacer through. Second, I guess you could try to fish these bolts through the end of the frame, but I didn't see how that was even possible with the short little fish tool provided. And third, there are a couple of threaded washers welded to the inside of the frame that will totally get in the way of the spacers. I had to reach my hand in and orient them in such a way as to make them lay flat against the frame to accept the bolt. I would actually wager that anyone trying to do this by fishing these things through did not get these installed nice and flat to the bottom of the frame. Any way you figure it, do yourself a favor and take off the bumper. It is easy and makes installing the bolts a breeze. I hired two lackeys to hold it up for me while I hand tightened the first two bolts on! But the motorcycle jack sounds handy if you can't get the help. I did a test haul with my camper and it this thing pulls it like it was nothing... this thing really hauls well. I have actually pulled this with same camper with a Ford F150 and the Edge pulls it just as well. It has a lot of power and drives so smooth although the trailer does have a weight equalization system which may account for the smooth ride. Here is a picture, I don't know if this will work, but: -Bob
  8. Well, I was under the impression from reading about this subject that most vehicles don't have stock trans coolers (with a dual fan system). I thought it would be prudent to add a trans cooler, however, I already have it. I also think that it has been well established that "Hitch != Tow package". But I get your drift. Now I am wondering how much an oil cooler would cost. It would be interesting to see pictures of the larger radiator and battery from someone who has the tow package. (Oh by the way, thanks for the information everybody!)
  9. I just bought a 2007 ford edge and I have been getting things ordered to equip it for towing. Initially I was told that it did not have the trailering package. So after reading this forum I picked out the Curt hitch (on its way), the electrical harness, 4-7 pin adapter, and brake controller and ordered them. However, all of that order is on hold because I read this post about the transmission cooler. Upon looking around I discovered that transmission cooler on my Edge!! Questions: 1. Can I infer from the presence of the transmission cooler that my edge does in fact have the trailering package (with the bigger rad. and oil cooler)? 2. If it does have the trailering package would I also be able to find a 4 wire port for trailer lights mounted in the back of the vehicle somewhere? If so I would just purchase the 4 wire to 7 wire adapter and I wouldn't need the T-One electrical harness from etrailer. Thanks.
  10. I am really sorry for posting this in multiple groups, but I haven't done this in years. I would like to get the wheel alignment specs for my new Ford Edge (well, not new - it is a 2007 with 28,000 kms). If possible, I would like to know the min/max values for the Camber, Caster, and Toe (front) as well as the Camber and Toe for the rear. Thanks, Bob
  11. I was wondering where I could get the alignment specifications. I need the Camber, Caster, and Toe for the front and the Camber and Toe for the rear. Thanks, Bob
  12. Could someone please tell me how to find out what the wheel alignment specifications are for my 2007 SEL (awd)? I am looking for the Caster, Camber, and Toe for the front and the Camber and Toe for the rear. Thanks, Bob
