  1. When it is time to change the antifreeze I am planning on taking it to Ford. They do a flush. When it is older and has more miles is a drain and fill preferable? I do not see any information about the location of the 2.0 engine water pump. I assume it is external because it does not seem to cause engine failure problems. Does the 2.0 have any situation comparable to the 3.5 that results in catastrophic engine failure? From my reading the gen 2 uses a new and I assume improved coolant (It is a different color anyway). It also has new water pump bearings. I have not read anything about a new seal. How helpful will these new tweaks be in preventing water pump failure? Any guesses? Ford tweaked and tweaked the trans on the Focus but never totally fixed the problem. Interesting rumor. 2020 Ford explorer will be RWD and will presumably have external water pump. The trans mounted 3.5 engine did not leave room for external pump in engine bay.
  2. I put about 10000 to 12000 miles a year on my Edge with about a 80% city, suburban drive at 25 to 45 mph and a 20% highway drive 65 mph and above. With my planned change schedule of 30,000 miles is that too infrequent? Since the acids in the coolant cause the seal to break down, instead of changing the coolant every 3 years maybe I should change it every 2 years? How good is the Motorcraft coolant these days?
  3. Thanks for posting the video Fish. Very informative. ( Thanks MACT for making it in the first place My Ford dealer gave me a free oil change for my first change on this vehicle and I asked for full synthetic. The rep seemed exasperated but did it. I was told the blend is 85% synthetic already and full synthetic not needed. Don't know if that is true but afterwards it seemed the Edge was quieter and quicker or smoother. Is that just my imagination? Anyone else experience this? If full synthetic creates less impurities over the synthetic blend and helps forestall water pump failure I am ok with the extra cost.
  4. I have a 2017 SEL FWD with 5000 miles on 3.5 engine. I decided to get the 3.5 because it has a longer track record. I knew before I bought it about the internal water pump design. Talked to the service department at my Ford dealer about it. They said they do not see an above average incidence of failed water pumps. When they do see a failed water pump it is usually over 150,000 miles. For maintenance they suggest changing the coolant every 30,000 miles. I asked if the owners manual had a typo. The service schedule says change at 100,000 miles and every 5000 miles after that. They said they never heard of that. They always tell their customers to change it every 30,000 miles. So that is the plan. I will change coolant every 30,000 miles and change oil every 5,000 miles with synthetic oil and use Motorcraft products. To everyone here does that sound like a good preventative plan for avoiding water pump trouble? I know nothing is guaranteed but I want to do what I can to prevent the problem. I also want to understand the cause of this problem. I know when the water pump fails the coolant mixes with the oil and ruins the engine. But why does this happen? Do impurities in the coolant and oil cause the water pump to fail? Do the impurities degrade the seals and allow the mixing? Since I have a tow package does the larger radiator help prevent a water pump failure by preventing overheating?
  5. Has anyone experienced tramlining? Under what conditions did it occur? What did you do to solve the problem?
  6. Ok, today I took the Edge out on a different interstate roadway. The tires are inflated to 36 on drivers side and 35 on passengers side. These reading are taken when cold and are according to dash display and came from the factory like that. I have not added air or checked pressure with my own separate tire gauge. The wind today was less 10 mph. At spots I noticed the side to side sway. I also noticed there were thin grooves in the roadway surface going in the direction of the road and parallel to the road edge. These grooves look to be put into the road surface on purpose. This surface is 3 years old and looks in good shape. I also noticed these lines on the other interstate I tried. I think I am experiencing tramlining. I feel in control of the Edge but the sway is annoying. I read wide tires are more susceptible to tramlining. Why are they putting these grooves in the road surface? I am guessing it is a safety feature for large semi-trailer trucks to help prevent them from going off the road. The question is what to do about this in my Edge? Do I need to go back to the dealer and say I think I am experiencing tramlining and ask for an alignment? Should I inflate my tires differently? Should I get different tires in a different width? with a different pattern?
  7. Michelin Latitude P2 245 60R18 tires original equipment on my new 2017 Ford Edge SEL 3.5 FWD with trailer hitch and pano roof. Last weekend took the SUV out on the interstate for the first time. I noticed it rocking back and forth at times doing 70 to 75 mph. This concerns me. Are the original equipment tires a good choice for interstate driving? Do they provide stable handling? I don't go over 75. Many rural interstates are 70 so going a little bit above that to pass is not that unusual a driving situation. I took the vehicle into my selling dealer to look over. They said the suspension was fine and if it was a belt separating I would feel that sensation at low speeds. They more or less said this is just how the suv drives. They said the Edge does not have a history of flipping over. They also said Ford only tests their vehicles at the speed limit. They don't test at 80mph for example. For further input I also took it to discount tires to get their opinion. They said Michelin Latitudes are good tires and the Edge is a good vehicle. The advisor suggested it was a windy day and maybe that caused the sensation I noticed. We have had a Ford Windstar and Ford Focus and I have not noticed this sensation before. Is this just a matter of everything is fine and I just have to get use to how it drives?

  9. Yeah I was looking at a quick detail product that said it cut down on dust. I was wondering if anyone tried it and how it worked for them.
  10. Last month I got a burgundy velvet '17 Edge. That color looks sharp. I negotiated the dealers prep down to a good price and went ahead and had them send it out to seal the paint. I know, I know. But I had good luck with my last car going down that route. After I wash the vehicle it looks great. However after a few days there is a film of very fine dust on it. From afar it looks fine. But upon close inspection you see it. I never noticed this problem before. I don't know if it is because I had lighter vehicles and just did not notice it or something else is at work. I've only had one other dark colored car from years ago and that had a thick navy blue paint with no clear coat on it and I never noticed this problem. Maybe the car was never shiny enough to notice though, LOL. I have read that the clear coat has an electrical charge to it. I don't know what the Permaplate paint sealant does to this charge. Could the dust in the air be attracted to the surface of my vehicle through electrical attraction? Dust particles are polar and have a positive and negative side and I could see the appropriate side being attracted to my car. I talked to a detail shop about this and what I could do and they scoffed at the idea of electrical attraction of dust. Does anyone else have this dust problem? What is the reason for it? What are you doing about it?
  11. Last month I got a new '17 Edge SEL trim and am enjoying the vehicle. I now have 1600 miles. Now trying to figure out how to improve the comfort of the seats for long trips. I have leather seats with the 10 way adjustment and lumbar support. The seats seem to be getting more comfortable. Either they are getting broken in or I am getting more use to them, LOL. It took forever to find the right distance, height, angles for the seat and steering wheel. The heated seat feature I think softens up the seat foam. I can not put my finger on exactly what would improve the seats now. I don't know if the problem is the pitch of the seat needs further modification, the side bolsters are still too intrusive, the bottom seat cushion needs more springs or stronger springs if so equipped, or there just needs to be thicker seat foam or differently shaped seat foam. I did get a separate gel seat cushion. I also got separate pieces of harder foam and softer foam from a car upholstery shop. I tried each of those items and they helped a little but introduced their own discomfort issues. So I am back just using the seat as is. Before buying the Edge I test drove a lot of vehicles. The ones that impressed me with seat comfort are the cloth seats in the Honda Pilot, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Outback. I think the common factors were the seats were more plush and maybe flatter. I read the Titanium trim has better seats. Can anyone confirm that? I know the passenger seat adjustments are the same as the driver's seat. I did not try that trim because I wanted the tuning knob on the standard radio on the SEL and not the toggle switch for channel selection on the upgraded Sony radio in the Titanium. Does the Lincoln MKX have better seats? Plusher seats? I have read you can adjust those 22 different ways. I can see that being a good or bad thing, LOL. MKX owners let us know. So has anyone done anything to improve their seat comfort? If so what did you do? Inquiring minds want to know.
  12. Hi, I am new to the Ford Edge myself. I say Yes to the All Weather Floor mats! I got the cold weather package because I wanted the heated steering wheel and all weather mats just happened to come with that. Once I had them I found I REALLY like them. They look good, not clunky, and they contain all the dried leaves everyone tracks in this time of year, LOL. Also like the heated steering wheel on cold mornings!
  13. New member here. Last month I traded in my '12 Ford Focus for a new '17 Edge. I loved how the Focus drove but it was getting too cramped for my needs. For a large vehicle the Edge has a nice ride and is slightly reminiscent of the Focus. I was a member of Focus Fanatics and enjoyed my time over there and learned a lot. Nice People. Now I look forward to being a member of this forum. I have 1500 miles on my Edge now. It is the burgundy velvet, love the color, SEL trim with lots of options, and 3.5 engine, FWD.
