Yes, I have. Its performance is very similar to the V6 except it has more torque below 3000 RPM... above 3000 RPM they're basically indistinguishable. I had taken care of the torque in my V6 by changing the rear end gears and tuning.

My Edge was an Ecoboost as well. In fact, I bought the Edge over other options specifically because of the Ecoboost. The performance was decent but the economy is a myth (our current V6 Kia Sorento - bigger and heavier - gets far better mileage with similar performance) and I still don't see turbos as being a good choice for the long run. So, if I'm not going to get great mileage in a new Mustang anyway, then I'll go with the naturally aspirated V8 over a small forced induction engine every time.

Interesting you should say that because I have an 18 EB Mustang and yes, it doesnt make a lot of power over 6k but with the 10 speed box you can keep the power in the sweet spot all the time. My car has only 1100km on the clock, my fastest 0-100kph is 5.7 (should be able to easily get it below 5.5 if I find a piece of road with a bit more traction) and if I put it on Cruise Control at 100kph I average below 8l/100km; sounds like a I am having my cake and eating it and all for under 30k Canadian!

Our Edge Sport, V6 EB, averages 11l/100 in town and below 9l/100 on the open road even when fully loaded with the AC running. The old gal even managed below 10 during a roadtrip at -35 C !! And when the opportunity strikes, she doesnt mind hiking up her ol' skirt and showing some supposedly much faster cars a clean pair of heels.

EB doesnt sound as bad as a lot of people make them out to be... Soon, all Fords will be turbocharged and then the hybrid era will set in before we go all electric. The nice thing about continuous progression, it gives old people something to complain about all the time :)

  2. So the toilet clogged and I pulled out my old friend, Mr. Plunger. Let him do his thing as he had done for some many years now. And all at once, my old friend was attacked by the tird. Now, I know it sounds ridiculous, but take a look at the picture and what it did to Mr. Plunger.

But wait it gets better. (How this ties into an Edge/MKX forum).

So at this point, I'm besides myself. I just lost an old friend, so I did what any red-blooded American male would do, I piled into the 'ol MKX, and drove the Wally World to buy a new ine. At midnight. (Man, you can't believe the weirdo's loose in WalMart at midnight. It's like stepping into the twilight zone; on Hallaween. It started with a meth addict handing out carts at the door (at midnight???) and some fat teenie bopper walking all over the store whistling for his dog. (Think his dog probably ditched him.)

Anyway back to the story. Got a new Mr. Plunger and headed out to the MKX to go home. Opened the cargo hatch and threw the new plunger in. Walked over to open the car door and next thing I know, I'm holding the handle in my hand. It completely broke off. Parts all over the ground, some dog barking in the distance, the moon went behind the clouds and I'm standing there unable to get in my car! Yes, I know!

    Hellofadeal!

So I thought and finally figured out if I hold the door unlock button for a few seconds, the window will roll down and I can use the inside door handle.

So now I have to take my sweetie over to ford in the morning and see how much a new door handle will set me back. A chrome, ... "Lincoln" ..... door handle.... uh huh.

LOL! That sounds like a great night out!

  3. Out of interest, those numbers were taken from a Ford training brochure in 2015 if I remember the story correct. It wasn't publicized widely for obvious reasons.... As an owner of a 2018 EB Stang, I can tell you, the difference is big enough to justify the 25% The 2018s has the overboost feature to get to the new 350 ft lb and on 87 you never get that extra surge in power as the car pulls so much timing. But I agree with you, if you are happy to never go WOT (seeking power, not just going wot for wot's sake) and is not interested in 0-60s etc. you can use whatever you want in the car and it will run.

  4. On

Don’t have to watch it to answer that one.

If your owner’s manual requires Premium, use premium. Period. Outside the Ford GT I don’t think any Ford requires premium.

If your owner’s manual says you can use Premium to get better performance then its optional. You’ll get a bit more power and a tiny bump in mpg by using Premium but it’s not enough to make up the difference in cost. So Premium will cost more. Whether it’s worth it for you is up to you depending on how you like the performance.

If your owner’s manual doesn’t say either of the above then you won’t get any benefit from Premium.

30-40 years ago they used to put better additives in Premium fuel but that’s no longer the case.

Ecoboost Mustang and Focus RS can gain as much as 30hp by switching from 87 to 93.

  5. @max83_za:

You dont want it to be called an ST because thats just a warmed over version of a bland model. But the replacement for the edge sport, by your own admission, is essentially going to be a warmed over version of the Ford Edge. So by definition, doesnt the new Edge ST fall exactly in line with you definition of ST?

Did I get that right? Or am I missing something?

Exactly nailed it! The Edge sport is already too firm so what will ST do, lower it and firm it up. Because when its lower and firmer it must be faster according to Ford. They also add 10hp because now its an ST but essentially, it will still run out of steam at 5000rpm. This is exactly what they do with all their ST models and then everyone gets excited because its a Ford Performance product. What a joke.

So what I am saying, leave the sport alone. Make it faster or warmer with more power and torque but make it more comfortable with adaptive dampers instead of ruin it with a wannabe stiffer design and stupid stickers. Sell it for what it is instead of what its pretending to be.

  6.

    ... Fixed it for you.

The reason there's a "family sedan exhaust" on the Ecoboost Mustang is because no Mustang owner wants to listen to a 4-cylinder exhaust (or even admit they have one)... if you're buying a Mustang for performance, you certainly aren't buying the EB. But for those who like the sound of fart cannons (i.e. ricers), there are aftermarket options available.

Just the opinion of a Mustang owner. B)

I just bought a 2018 Perfromance Pack Ecoboost with the 10speed auto for a daily run around (average below 8l/100km when cruising - its fantastic lol). Car has 500km on the clock and I just ordered a Magnaflow competition cat back. Its not going to sound like a V8, because it isnt a V8, but it will sound closer to the Focus RS (with which you know it share a lot\not exact engine). I think the EB should have sounded like the focus RS direct from the factory.

I am not saying 4 poppers should sound like V8's but there are great sounding 4 cylinders out there; all 45 series AMG merc's, Focus RS, 2018 S3 with the new exhaust, Clusport S GTI, Golf R with Akra pipes, Hyundai i30 N etc. There is no replacement for displacement but that is not an excuse to completely ignore what comes out the back of your 4 poppers...

  7. I just don't see why calling it a ST is such a problem.

Because all of the reasons i mentioned are what I deem important for a Performance vehicle (again, my opinion - which Ford does not care about) - a sport badge says faster, not performance - the ST badge says performance and I am pretty sure it is not going to be a performance SUV.

  8. So just because it doesn't measure up to YOUR standards they shouldn't sell it? Mmmkay.

It's an improved Edge Sport. Nothing more nothing less. If you don't want it don't buy it.

I believe this topic is discussing what our definitions of performance are and what we think it could\should be mmmkay

I was pretty vague with my initial post, you then asked me for more detail, why get butt hurt when i give my opinion? Wow....

  9. I guess you don’t understand Ford Performance. It’s the old SVT team. They do a lot more tuning than the regular Edge team did with the Sport.

You didn’t answer the question - what else do you think they should have done with it?

Nothing, I dont think they should have created an Edge ST to start with.... Trust me, I understand Ford Performance, I drove ST Fords waayyyyy before they came to North America. I drove the very first Fiesta ST, the one with the high revving 2.0 aspirated 4 popper, the 2.5 5pot Focus ST (both models), previous Gen 1.6 ST and I even owned the outgoing face-lift Focus ST. So I am not sure how much more experience I need before I "understand" Ford performance. Heck, I even have experience with the Ford Mondeo ST 220 and Territory ST.

If you want me to tell you what is wrong with ST in general I will gladly do so:

    1. Under promise and overdeliver with power and performance figures - stop quoting cars to have 250hp and when you strap them to a dyno they put down only 200hp - look at what the germans are doing with their performance hatchbacks. This is the exact reason why on a dragstrip a Focus RS cant keep up with a faceift Golf R or why a 250hp Focus ST gets slapped around by a 220hp GTI.

    2. Stop picking the smallest turbos you can find to make your "quoted" power, cars that stop making power when they reach 5000rpm is called turbo diesels.... Yes, it makes the car feel very fast with little turbo lag and then a big sudden woosh of torque but when you put that on the road against a properly tuned car, it will lose every time.

    3. The focus ST and RS is renowned for pretty darn good handling but with uncompromising ride comfort. Tried and tested... The competition, including the new Civic Type R and A class AMG merc, figured out how to fix this. Ford Performance is literally the only company out there that think your car needs to be rock hard firm to be fast.

    4. Give the cars some exhaust sound, ST badged cars sounds terrible. I know the new 3 pot Fiesta sounds pretty sweet but its not even coming to NA... You put a Focus RS engine in a Mustang and then slap a family sedan exhaust on it... (last one doesnt count, its just a good example)

    5. Fit a proper interior with some nice performance gauges, the germans does it, heck even dodge does it, why is Ford not doing it? (i am not talking a boost guage stuck on the dash...)

    This is just my opinion.

  10. What exactly makes you say this? The tuned 2.7LEB is pretty much at the platform maximum for power so nothing to add there. Big brake kit and a tuned suspension. Not sure what else you think it should have. It’s not a sports car.

Exactly, so why give it a ST Badge with track tuned suspension? They should have given it adaptive dampers, the new gearbox more power (325hp is fine) and kept the name. What exactly did they achieve by slapping a ST badge on it? Trying to attract younger buyers I guess?

  11.

The Edge only has a 18.8 degree front approach angle, so if the hill was really 25 degrees, you would have smashed your front bumper trying to pull on to it.

Had nothing to measure the angle, so its just a wild guess. It looked pretty crazy standing infront of it and you werent able to walk up the road on the ice, it was too slippery.

Like Omar said, it was a gradual incline; you turn off the main road into an alley. You will see within a couple of meters you climb two stories, i know photos are deceptive but compare the distance you travel to the height of the cars and the parking garage. Now imagine that piece of road covered with ice!

Edit: doesnt look crazy at all in the photo lol Guess its the angle of the camera on the google car roof. Oh well....

  12. How does the 19 Edge AWD differ from what was used in the past? It is described as "AWD disconnect" so does that mean it operates as FWD until AWD is needed? Will this decrease the mileage penalty for AWD vs. FWD? Does the driver control the disconnect? We have a 13 Edge FWD and are considering a 19 Edge and trying to decide if the added cost and mileage penalty are worth it. We live in the Midwest and have a 4X4 F150 when things get really bad.

Yes, it essentially runs as a FWD when cruising.

Yes, it means less parasitic loss and better fuel economy.

No, the driver doesnt do anything, the car decides when to send the power where.

I drove my Edge Sport up a 25 degree (wont be surprised if it was more than 25) incline that was solid ice (you could not walk up the hill...). Car was sitting on a set of 20 inch conti wintercontacts and it was just about a non event. You could actually feel how the car was sending power to wheels with traction. I actually made my wife drive the exact same piece of road with me to supposedly guide her up but she went up with no assistance! A poor VW Jetta tried to do same incline right before I went, and managed 0.5m before the car just spun its wheels and started skidding backwards.

Overtook a semi at highway speeds and hit black ice, no adjusting drive modes, no locking hubs, nothing, car tracked true and straight and got me safely to the other side.

I also watched a video the other night of a 2019 Edge doing an axle twister obstacle where one front wheel and one rear wheel was off the ground and it made it comfortably. In fact, something that really surprised me was that as the car crept forward the front wheel that was in the air wasnt spinning indicating the car was braking the wheel to effectively send all the power to the wheel with traction. You will probably need a 4x4 with low range to go rock crawling but for your day to day use, you will never need more than what an Edge AWD brings to the table.

  13. Even with perfect prep 845 never lasts as long for me as Zaino Z2 Pro or Duragloss 111/601 combo. I've done the half and half test quite a few times on the hoods of various vehicles and always get the same results. I know a lot of people put 845 over a good synthetic sealant but I've never tried that. 845 has a cult like following on detail forums but it just hasn't been that great for me. Living in Michigan causes me to wash my vehicles a lot which could very well be the difference maker. Maybe pure sealants hold up to frequent car washes better then Collinite.

Thats what I use to do to get the longevity of a synthetic sealant and the wet look of a carnauba. In hindsight, its probably a little over the top...

I am now running SONAX Polymer net (and no it doesnt last a full Edmonton winter) but I top-up every wash with Turtle Wax's Wax and Dry. The wax and dry has very low durability but because you use it with every wash it gives pretty good results. Combo I will be sticking with for now. Will probably switch to Wolfgang for this winter to see if I make it through.
