  1. :happy feet: Drove to work today in my 2009 Honda Accord paid for by Ford. Finalized buyback of my 2007 Edge last night! Settled through arbitration with the Better Business Bureau. Thanks to all of you (except Capt. Kirk) for your comments and suggestions. Special thanks to whoever posted the service bulletin on here awhile back. It really helped in my arbitration. Good luck to the rest of you. If you are experiencing the leak and are frustrated by repeated fixes check BBB.org for your state. I don't think Ford will give anyone a hard time buying back the Edge.

  2. I have about 14 complaints about Stinkin PTU Problems with the Ford Edge.

Most of them seem to be coming from the Northern States or Canada. So it does seem to confirm that it is a cold weather problem.

At this point people don't care anymore they just what resolution.

This is definitely my last Ford.

    SMOKIN EDGE

I know. I am one of them! Love your website but all of this is not doing us any good if they don't have a fix for our problem.

  3. Got my vehicle back. They replaced the following:

    1 unit: 7T4Z-3A329-BD Shaft P01

    1 unit: 8T4Z-7275-A Kit P02

    Fluid

They said that this seems to fix it for now. They had noticed a bit of pitting on the shaft and replaced it to be on the safe side. They doubted it was permenent. He said it seems to have worked on most of the vehicles as they have not come back. Some he said come back over 5 times ... it's weird.

Ford is holding back on the 3rd seal as they need to get heating ovens to heat the seal up to 212 deg. F

Ford claims (to me anyway) that it works on some and not on others because this is a very intricate procedure and not all dealerships do it right. I have had those parts put in my car twice now and still have a leak. Oh, and Ford also admitted that this problem does only seem to occur in cold weather which explains why I went from Feb to Oct with no leak and it came back in Feb. Very frustrating! Hopefully, you will have better luck with yours.

  4. I recently had a similiar Issue:

When I was stopped at a Red Light (with no cars around me) smoke blew into my Edge From the A/C Vents filling my cab. I quickly turned off the A/C and rolled down the Windows. 5 minutes later, Being an obvious glutton for punishment, I turned the A/C back on, and smoke filled the cab Again. I called My Ford Dealership and made an appointment for the next morning.

I explained the Above and a few hours after Dropping off my Edge I got a call from my Service Writer saying "Unable to Duplicate the concern"

At THAT Point I mentioned that many Edge owners were having PTU leaks. He told me He Checked Them already and that even if they Leaked, the Seals arent Near my A/C intake. :banghead:

    Hmmmmm Any Advice ?

I never had the smoke come in through the air vents. It poured out from the driver's side of the hood.

  5. Does anyone here know what might happen if the Ptu runs out of fluid? My edge has had 3 ptus and several seal kits. A few weeks ago i thought that i smelled the burning smell again. It was so faint though that i thought it was just my imagination so i never gave it much thought. I am unable to notice if it drips onto my driveway becase my driveway is dirt.It is the begining of mud season here in Maine and my driveways is always wet. I did look under the edge and noticed that the boot had been wet and there was dirt sticking to it. Not sure if it was just some residual from two months ago when they replaced the last PTU.

Well today driving home from dropping the son off at school there was a horific noise coming from the pass front area. Same side that has been giving us all the problems. It sounds like a metal on metal grinding noise. It happens at slow speeds and high speeds and stops when the edge stops. Not happy about it one bit! just figured i throw this out there and see if anyone has had this noise. I am sure that it stems from all the repairs over the last 1yr and a half. One other little tid bit the last time the edge was in getting its 3rd Ptu they had to break if not cut off the tye rod on the pass side because it was so rusted on. Thank god for all the crap they put on the winter roads.

    07 Edge buildt on 3/07

The smell does come and go. Not sure why. Seems stronger in colder weather for sure. I also have a clunking sound that comes from the driver's side of the car usually when making left turns. I too think this is because of all the work that has been done on my car. After 3 fixes it is time to look into your local lemon law or Better Business Bureau.

  6. Edge18,

There are 2 types of leaks on the PTU

    1. Leak from the seal between Transmission and PTU (inner seal)...Leaky oil will be "reddish" in color, same as the Transmission

    2. Leak from PTU itself (outer seal)...Leaky oil is darker in color ("black")

    1. is the most common problem with our vehicles. Look back on this blog, somebody posted the TSB on this --> TSB 08-12-3

You will need to look under the vehicle where the Right Side Driveshaft enter the PTU. What color oil do you see. If it's "reddish" in color, then make sure to check once in a while the tranny fluid level. You can drive it, however be aware of the smell and smoke that

may materialize as the oil drips on the enhaust.

If the oil is dark in color, then you do have a bigger problem, as it is the oil inside the PTU that is leaking. There in not much oil inside the PTU --> approx 1/2 quart...so depending on the amount of the leak, you may want to keep an extra "eye" on this.

Unfortunately, the position of the oil fill plug is hard to get to. But with some patience it can be done.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the info but I am just a mom will never get under the hood or check the tranny fluid and I don't want to pay someone else to check these fluids. Thanks anyway. Hopefully I will make it the BBB and back.

  7. I have been driving around with this leak for a few weeks now waiting for my hearing. Ford will not look at my car now that I have filed a case against them. Should I be concerned about losing transmission fluid? I have a long drive to the hearing next week.

  8. Great to hear that FORD repurchase your vehicle...I only hope you got what you wanted $$

I am scheduled for the 2nd week of April for the Arbitration meeting. I am expecting also a buyback from FORD..

It's a shame as otherwise it is a very fine vehicle...Well, looks like I will be looking once more at the Japanese models.

    My hearing is March 24th.

  9. Well, I've been reding about this since I started with my PTU problems on my 08 Edge SEL AWD, and finally decided to post since it will be going in on Wednesday for the 3rd time. Here's my story - I bought it used from the dealership at the end of December. It was originally a rental car in LA. I bought it six months old with 7500 miles on it here in Great Falls, MT. Had it for 3 days and had the leak. Dealer did seal kit and within 3 weeks it leaked again. This time they replaced the whole PTU(or siad they did). Now a couple of months later it is smoking and stinking with puddles underneath again. I've got a whopping 9500 miles on it now. I'm going to advise them of the heat method for the seal and I saw someone else on here who had to have the axle replaced as well. I'm hoping they fix it. My wife and I love the car (it is her daily driver), but don't want to shell out more $$ for a new one that I would bet will leak as well. I'm thinking about asking the dealer for an extended warranty - has anyone gone that route?

I have been told that this part is under warranty for 60,000 miles because it is part of the transmisson and that each time they fix it the part put in is guaranteed for one year.

  10. Not to jinx myself, but am wondering why after my dealership replaced the whole PTU unit, it is not leaking anymore. Makes me wonder if it is fact how it is installed. I have heard and read that it is a very difficult install to do requiring "special" tools. If not installed exactly right, they will leak again......Just curious.......

Mine lasted for 3 months (5133 miles) after the whole unit was replaced before the smell returned. How long has it been?

  11. Talked with Ford and the BBB today. Explained to them I was not in the frame of mind to work on it further. 24-48 hours I will have Ford's official position and know if they are going to repurchase or if we are going to have a hearing.

Good luck! I will be anxious to see what they say. I am waiting for Ford to offer some sort of settlement other than working on the car again or I will be at arbitration as well.

  12. Hi rdonchann. :D Actually, for anyone who cares the proper quote is "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. This quote is arguably attributed to Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin or various other individuals, according to who is doing the attributing :hysterical:.

But I certainly understand that it fits this case either way.

I just have a recommendation or two: First, allow Ford to fix the car when they ask, it looks better for your arbitration claim if you have not denied Ford any opportunity they have asked for. By denying the automaker the opportunity to give it another shot, you give them a little added ammo to stall the arbitration process. Just insist on a loaner, if the loss of the vehicle during the repair process will be an inconvenience. Once the BBB AutoLine Arbitration Board says you no longer need to make your car available for repair, then you are free to do as you like. But get it in writing from the BBB.

Next: There is really no need to provide documentation from others who have had the same problem. Legally, it does not matter. All that matters legally is that you are having a problem. If you were the lone, single person to ever have a PTU leak, that is all that matters when you document your attempts at resolving the problem. Other Edge owners problems and repair attempts are irrelevant. Essentially, you do not have to prove that others are having the same problem, or that their problems could not be repaired in X number of attempts. You only need to prove that you have the problem and it can not be properly repaired in your case.

Just to make what I am stating perfectly clear: The added information will not hurt your cases, it is just irrelevant and a bunch of added paperwork that is not needed.

Just trying to save you some unnecessary work.

Thanks for clarifying that as the paperwork is piling up as it is. I denied that Ford work on my car becuase if they fix it and it lasts past the 36,000 miles I will no longer have the chance to go to arbitration. Any thoughts?

Hope this information is not too confusing.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

  13. No loaner now. Was in the shop 2 weeks and all they could come up with was to put in another seal. I told them that was a waste of effort and picked it up. Doing the same thing over and over and getting the same result is the definition of stupidity. BBB said Ford did not understand why I picked it up. After I told BBB the story they agreed with my reasoning. My other reason was I was afraid Ford would use it as a stall tactic by saying they had just done another repair on it and want more time.

I agree. I just cancelled the engineer that Ford was sending to perform the final repair on my car. Unless they put a buy back offer on the table I will be off to arbitration.

  14. Well after two weeks and two attempts of fixing my leak, I got my car back from the dealer yesterday am and so far no leaks or burning smells . The first attempted fix was to just change the seal. That did not work, so they ordered and put in a whole new PTU Unit. I will be driving it tomorrow quite a distance . This will truly test the repair. Will update....Hopefully it wont leak.

Good luck. That will last longer than the seal for sure but for me after I put another 6000 miles on the car the smell was back.

  15. Sure! I wrote out a chronological order of things and sent it in to the BBB with my paperwork. I listed each date and mileage and what was done each time. It is easier to understand the scenario if you have that rather than try and make sense from a bunch of work orders. I brought that to the attention of the mediator yesterday and after we went through it together she said she really understands where I am coming from. They are a "neutral" party but that made it a lot more understandable for her. She said now that she has that info and understands it she would contact their rep and get back with me maybe as soon as today.

I may be wrong but I really don't think Ford will do a buy back for anybody without being ordered to. That is a last ditch effort for them. If they can get you to take a warranty it is to their advantage. You may wreck it or a number of things that could release them from liability. They hope you become so thrilled with the warranty that you will lose sight of the fact that you still have the same problem and it is not fixed.

Thanks! I sent BBB a chronological order as well. They are reviewing my papers now and then will get back to me. I will ask them how we should document so we can help each other's cases. You are in a loaner car now aren't you?

  16. Heard from the BBB today. Ford offered to work on it again. Told them doing the same thing over and over and getting the same result was the definition for stupidity and I was not interested. They offered to throw in a 75000 mile warranty. Told them I had plenty of warranty, that was not the problem. They have no fixes left, that is the problem. They did not realize the situation "supposedly" and are supposed to get back with me.

Pure shock and awe! They offered a warranty as a bargining chip.See my post above. I should have been a prophet.

Ford called me yesterday and said that by law they have one last repair attempt and want me to bring it in to my dealer to have their engineer work on it. I then called the BBB who told me that they are not entitled to a repair attempt but I should let their engineer look at it. Have to call both back today. I told Ford that their customer service rep already told me that they don't have any other fixes than what has already been done to my car. If they had a fix they could have fixed it at 1400 miles. Rdonchann - would you be willing to document your saga for me to bring to arbitration if needed? I would be happy to do the same for you.

  17. Well they changed the seal , took it for a drive and yup, its still leaking. They now have ordered a whole new PTU unit insead of just the seal. Willl be at least 2 weeks now! :banghead: Now I have an issue about transportation. Without a vehicle as of Monday and they state that unless I purchased the Extended Warrenty it does not cover rentals....Would think Ford would p/u the rental cost whereas this is an ongoing problem with them...Any input would be appreciated .... Anyone else know if FOrd will pick up the rental cost?

Call Ford Customer Service and demand a rental. The dealer gave me a hard time with this but once I opened a case with Ford it was taken of.

  19. I figure first they will want to offer is an extended warranty. Those are always bargining chips with them. We have warranty now that is not the problem. Mine has to go. I would do an 09 in FWD, that would get rid of the PTU, the rest of mine is great. They can issue a credit so I can afford to trade it off or they can buy it. Those are about the only 3 that I will settle for. I may lose, who knows. Let us know if you get a response and I will do the same.

What state are you in? I am in northern NJ and need the AWD. Will keep you posted. I will not settle for the extended warranty either. Right now, smell is back but not frequent yet.

  20. What are you thinking the outcome of BBB will be? We don't want a 2009 Edge. I can't see them just handing over a new car. I am hopeful and anxious for a remedy but do you really think they will take these cars off our hands?
