New to the boards, new to the Edge, new to Ford. Not new to automobiles or modern direct inject, turbocharged vehicles.

My wife and I picked up a 2019 2.0L Titanium (2500 miles) this past weekend for her. We're having a bit of buyer's remorse. This sound sucks, we didn't notice it during the test drives. We've taken it back to the dealer to have them listen. Responses range from "that's how they sound" to "you're definitely hearing the HPFP".

No, what I hear is something loose in the timing- perhaps a tensioner. I've been listening to clicky-clacky, ticky-tocky, "sewing machine" sounds since 2008 with my Audi A5 and BMW 435i. The Ecoboost has those sounds because its basically the same tech. This motor, I'm quite sure, is exhibiting something else. Idle seems fine, but as RPMs rise that's when you hear it.

Yeah that does not sound normal.  When rev'ed the fuel pump noise normally is drowned out by standard engine rev'ing sounds.  Although I wish they still put the padded engine covers on these as they seem to mute the sounds of the fuel pump.  My Focus ST sounded nothing like your engine does, it did have a cover but even with it removed it did not sound like that.  My ST V-6TT does not even sound like that, but it does have a cover on it and hood pad as well.  My DI HPFP noises go away pretty much as the engine warms up, due to the cover and hood pad muting them enough.  My Dad has an Escape with the 2.0T and mom has a MKC with the 2.3T and neither sound like your motor.

GEEZ! I get 20mpg in my Sport and every 60secs is a race for me!

I ended with 15.2mpg according to the computer for that tank.  I did not use Fuely as I gave up on chasing any kind of good numbers and just drive it like I am running from a cop.  But even though I live out of town I do not drive nicely at all even in town so it is all good.  That number is just low because I just got the updated tune and just started using 93 again, plus it is winter gas as well.  I had been running the 87-89 because I am kind of unemployed right now so I wanted to save the 8 bucks a week on the fill-up but that got boring.  Lol!

    Hey SpecialK,

Y R we putting the effort out 2 make an after market listing of HiPo parts when very few R even attempting 2 query for it???

It is because for some reason they made a separate ST subforum instead of just lumping it into that sub.  So no one with an  ST looks in there.  I mean I do but most probably ignore that one.  The ST sub is strange to me since the is not a Sport subforum.  I know most stuff most likely fits the ST that was on the Sport but maybe others do not know this.

  4. Livernois has released v3 of the tune and then an update to v3.  I have both but it I need to see how dry the road is this morning to do at least a 0-60 then switch to the newer version I got last night and see if there is any difference.  I got v3 two days ago but it was snowing and my Dragy was dead.  It did have more boost in the lower gear and seemed to pull better but it also was 22F out at the time.

It might sound counter intuitive but I'm curious about the gas mileage you get when running the 93 performance tune and driving normal.

I don't drive normal.  My gas mileage sucked before the tune and is a hair better with the tune.  Vehicle computer says my average for the last 13,000 miles is 18.1mpg.  The Fuely Application, when I was using it, said my mileage was closer to 16.9mpg.  I floor it a lot and get up to speed as quick as this beast can get there.  I also remote start the vehicle in the winter a lot so that drops it and I live in the Northern half of the US where we get 'Winter' Gas for 6 months of the year, which lessens mileage.  Before the tune I was clocking 17 on the car computer and 15.9 on the Fuely App.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

    UPDATE:

    - I had cleared the code and she hadnt had an issue since. I was going to check the plugs but didnt have time.

-Fast forward to today when she was driving home, the car started hesitating and shuddering under partial throttle (40-60mph). It doesnt happen under harder acceleration or if it downshifts. Im thinking the increased load of being in 6th while at low rpm is doing it. I put the car back on the stock tune and I can still get it to happen, but it's much harder to get it to happen on the stock tune. It's not throwing any codes. I'm going to bite the bullet and check plugs tonight.

Do these symptoms seem normal for a spark/coil issue or should I be checking something else?

    Thanks for the help everyone!

On my FoST I had that happen and it was the plugs, the gap had widened way out of spec so it would miss.  Of course it could also be a coil pack going bad as well but the plugs is where I would start.

I was able to speak to someone yesterday and was told that I'd receive a tune the next day (today).  Well I checked this morning and indeed I received a tune but I was expecting to receive more than only one !… I downloaded it in my programmer but haven't downloaded it in my Edge yet because we're in the middle of a snowstorm right now and will not be able to drive and "try" the car to see the difference the tune will (hopefully) do… :play:

    More later...

    Claude.

When you look at the programmer you should have three tunes, an 87-89, 91, and 93 tune.  At least that is what I ended up getting for my ST.  Unless you request something else like a Towing tune that is what you get.

Still haven't heard from Livernois since Jan 24th. when I sent them the info they needed to "build" some tunes for me… :(  I wonder why it's taking so long…

    Claude.

I would call them and see what is up.  That is far to long.  I had to call them on my first tune because they seemed to have 'forgot' about it.

The following is just my opinion and not saying LMS is not a good company.  I have had LMS tune since just a couple of weeks after getting my ST and have had my ST for over a year now.  Now, I like the tune and the options with the level of tunes you can get from LMS, but.  After working with them by phone and waiting for a few days for replies by email and waiting for the next level of tune.  I am beginning to wonder once they have some tune setups for certain vehicles, like the ST, but not really anything else, the ST is now on the back burner.

Now, if you have a Mustang or other similar vehicles, where they know owners want more and more of those vehicles are modified, you are the ones they want to sell too?  I can understand that, but only to a point.  If any company will not fully  support all customers and have decided they will not update any further, than be honest and tell your customers.  Yes, I know that does not happen for business reasons, money.

Well not many people tune their ST's, at least as of right now, and there are most likely a lot less of them out there compared to of course other vehicles.  I am sure it is not as important and also the same reason COBB does not care enough to make their AccessPort work with them or supply the canned tunes they do for other Ford's.  There just is most likely not a whole lot of money in Edge ST tunes.

yes I know how strategy codes work and tuning. Never seen anyone wait longer than 48hrs

Well this is for a 2.0 so who knows how many of the owners look for tunes on these models.  My last update which had a new code took 3 days if I recall but I sent that in on a Friday, the 3 days did not count the weekend either.   I am  not sure what year he has though, I did not see him specify the year.  I am sure he will get it though eventually.

  11. If it has been tuned for a lot of those 50,000 miles than I would absolutely check the plugs.  My Focus ST even with the stock tune would need to have the Gap on the plugs checked every 10,000 miles because the Gap would open up on two plugs and cause a slight miss.  Does not hurt to check them and check the Gap on them.  I plan on pulling mine on the ST around 15,000, I have 13,000 on it now and have run the LMS 93 tune for the last 10,000.

Oh wow. So they been marketing for something they could not fully provide.

It takes a minute or two to customize the tune for the specific vehicle Strategy Code.  If it is a code they have seen before then it is quicker than if it is a new code.  When I got my last TSB performed it changed mine so the old tunes did not work any longer and I needed them updated.  I sent them the information needed and within 2 days I got the new tune.  This is no different than with any other tuners, you send them the information that they require and they make the tune for you.  The Livernois tunes are canned but they still do need to be tweaked for different codes.

I sat in 2 different cars w/ 2.0 EB and they don't have the noise that I'm talking about,it seems intermittent now that engine is breaking in a little more.I also have a 07 edge and that 3.5 liter is quieter.dont get me wrong,I love my new edge, but was a little concerned about the sounds.

Did the other 2 vehicles have an engine cover with the foam as well as the foam hood pad?  Because that does make a difference.  When I would remove the engine cover on my Focus ST it was noticeably louder, but put the cover back on and close the hood and it was quieter but still could be head when warming up and high idle.  My Edge ST is the same was and it has both the cover and the hood pad but it quiets down after the engine revs come down.

On a side not why does this bother so many people?  Are you all idling your engines in the cold and standing next to them listening?  Just curious. It is perfectly normal.

2019 sel ,noisy padder  at idle, doesn't sound like injectors,After reading this post,I looked under hood and there's no hood blanket attached to hood,so I went to dealer and they told me they don't put them on 19-20.The parts dept.could not believe it that the sales dept refused to put one on ,so I had to buy one from the parts dept.for my brand new edge under 500 miles.I explained that that does soundproofing,,protects paint and  keeps the heat off the washer fluid lines.cost me $130 for the blanket fasteners the parts guy is giving me.parts guy gave it to me at cost he said, and I will install.

They no longer put them on at the factory to save money and have more profit.  As for the noise it is the nature of the beast with a Direct Injection engine.  High pressure fuel injectors are loud.  My 2.7TT sounds like a diesel on cold start, even louder than my previous Focus ST 2.0T engine.  My mothers Lincoln MKC 2.3T does the same thing and so does my dad's Escape 2.0T.  Cold start is the loudest.  The MKC is a little quieter due to the engine cover and hood pad.  My Edge ST came with a hood pad because it is an earlier build before they stopped installing them, but it is still loud.

I finally remembered to try if getting into the Test/Diag menu worked the same as my Focus ST did and it does. I was really hopping to find what gear was being used, but that wasn't available. I did find a screen that shows the speed and RPM as a digital readout though (attached photo). Since I was able to now see the number for the RPM I did a quick test around 35 mph on the way home looking at the difference between 2nd and 3rd and using this I could see a small drop in RPM. So maybe there really is no problem and it's just a poorly designed gear ratio setup (some may disagree, but 3rd gear is useless and shouldn't exist).

    20200117_124607.jpg

Nice.  I would like to point out that 2nd is the useless gear and not 3rd.  If you are flooring it from a stop you do not need 2nd since it only blips into it for a split second before going to 3rd where it continues to accelerate.  So if you kept 2nd and ditched the 3rd gear ratio and went into 4th then the vehicle would be slower to 60 not quicker.  Toss 2nd out and go into 3rd, since that is the same gear ratios as the Sport, and you would gain a split second to 60 due to the lack of the useless shift.

Briefly off-topic, since the above was mentioned:  Do you mean TSB 18-2378, dated 12-14-2018--which I've located via web search on NHTSA--about a "slosh noise" from the tank, mostly when it's over 3/4 full, & while driving at low speeds?  The affected Edge model years are 2015-2019-- those with AWD--for the usual "some" vehicles.

I actually never got paperwork for that one TSB for some reason so I do not know what the number was, but yes I complained about excessive sloshing almost clunk like noises when the tank was full and turning a corner at city street speeds.  I now no longer have that sound when the tank is full or anytime.

The ST trans was a big mistake..... all they needed to do was take the Sport and apply all the handling changes and tune to it and be done.....oh and not add 200lbs.....

I will say they should have just done what you said but tacked a 7th gear on the trans to increase fuel economy on the highway.  But yeah if they could not do that then use the 6 speed until they worked the bugs out of the 8 speed.  And geared the 8 speed better, it is just lazy to squeeze a gear in between two existing ones and tack one on the end.  Should have changed the gears for better performance.

  18. I seen very few Edge ST or Edge Sports anywhere near me.  I see more Raptors to be honest.  I have also seen more Explorer ST's and Explorer Sports.  Which is strange since the dealer I got mine from a year ago had 4 of them on the lot and another dealer close to me had 3.  I have seen 1 Edge Sport and maybe 2 Edge ST's in the last year, and one of those was a Canadian one.

Yes, that is about the amount of tire spin I get most times. But I have to kind of ease into it. If I mash the gas to the floor at 2000 rpm about releasing the brake I get alot of spin.

You have a Sport, their tunes have a tad more power than the ST because LMS knows what the Sport trans can take.  They did not do the ST tune the same and its gains are lower in comparison, even with the same motor.  The seem to want to not be responsible for blowing up the 8 speed.  They did a few revisions and had many years with the Sport and the 6 speed trans.  And the ST has that new gear between the Sports 1st and 2nd that screws shit up because when flooring it is not really needed since it should be skipped at that point and is not.  Ford screwed up this whole new trans by basically keeping  all the gears the same as the 6 speed but squeezing a new one in as 2nd and bumping 2nd to 3rd and tacking one on the end.  Just does not make much since, should have re-geared it all not just plop a gear in and use the exact same rest of them.  Sure it is great for in town smoothness but this is supposed to be a 'Sporty' vehicle.  I came from a Focus ST which was hard not to spin if you liked to drive, and that was stock.  Tune it and wow.
