  1. Hello All, I'm a new around these parts, and for the most part I'm new to Ford as well. The wife was *really* ready to trade up from the VW Beetle she's been driving since 2004. We've been car shopping for a week and hadn't really even considered Ford. On a whim yesterday, we pulled into the Ford dealer to test drive an Explorer and the Edge caught her eye. It was all over after the test drive...

Ordered the 2012 Limited with everything except the rear entertainment system. The Costco auto program brought the cost down to $225 under invoice (may vary by region?), then Ford has a $1000 rebate on top of that. I feel pretty good about the haggle-free deal, and the wife is *really* excited - which is priceless in itself. :D

Per the dealer, 2012 Edge production starts on Monday 8/8, and we should expect delivery in 6-8 weeks!

What is the difference between 2011 and 2012? We have 09 LTD fully loaded and I have been eying the 2011 for while. But the on going problems with the MFT is making me stay with the 09.

  2. I cannot believe the '11's are still having this issue ! Why doesn't Ford just ditch the PTU design and use the design of another car manufacturer. This is utterly ridiculous. I am so glad I did not go with the AWD.

2011 don't have this problem? It's miner fix anyway .....

  3. Sir - I applaud you on continuing to fight until you achieved your objective. Unfortunately, I feel I've started down the same road as you did even though I haven't had as many problems as you had. Ford has known since at least last July that there were significant problems with their Sync/MFT system and it still doesn't work properly for many folks, me being one. I've had to take the 2011 Edge back for work on the MFT 6 times. I had a 'hard shift' practically give me a heart attack when it happened and supposedly that will be fixed when I pick up the car from the dealership next week sometime. There is a persistant fluttering noise from near the driver's rear view mirror that they are still trying to fix.

In all fairness, I've been given a rental car that Ford paid for each time I've had to leave the car there (this time I will have had it for 6 days). Still - I will never buy a Ford again - I've learned my lesson. Imports only from now on.

We have our 09 LTD AWD since July 09 and had only one problem. The PTU seals were replaced and since than the car is running great. I think Ford makes really good product and stands behind it as well. If you google car problems with any imports or domestic manufacturers you will find people having problems as well. I think Volvo has the most problems fallowed by Audi and Toyota. The Internet is a great tool to find all these things. I would never buy imports because all the parts are very expensive.

I read about the problems with Sync/MFT on the 2011 models. It's new system which will have some bugs. Ford is working on it and I'm sure they will come with the solution.

  4. Just to be clear - only AWD versions have PTUs.

The PTU probles is not a problem any more.. Just take it to the dealer and they will fix it for free. It's part of the extended power train waranty. The new seals seem to work.

  5. Hey thanks for the response and the great news (I think).

I have the warranty guide and was hoping it was part of the system that's considered the 'power train' (which is where I consider it) but didn't know just how it was being handled by most dealers.

I'll be making the call first thing in the am to get an appointment.

So far very happy with the car and the wife loves it. I was hoping this part would be covered.

    Thanks again!

It's a minor repair nowadays. The seals they using now seem to be working .....

  6. I have a 2010 Edge that is just one year old. I have been a Ford owner since my first - 1966 Mustang. This is the first time I can say I am disappointed - ALMOST regret my purchase. It is the little things. For the price of the car: the driver's seat squeaks ( the dealer put WD40 - is that a solution ) it only happens if you buckle the seat belt ??? The navagation system (actually all of Sync) cannot understand me - I have to repeat directions or requests until I am blue in the face and give up. I speak perfect English - Boston accent - ??? The brakes grind whenever it is damp out. Dealer says this is NORMAL - oxidation - once I apply the brakes a few times no more grinding. NEVER has any other car I have owed done this?? Not as quiet a ride as one would expect in a new car. Maybe I am being picky but for the price I expected more....Any one have any input --please...

you being picky ...best ride i owed ..(09 awd ltd), all the things you mentioned are normal, you could program sync to your voice to solve that one ......

  7. I am taking my first long trip with my 2010 Edge that has about 5000 mi on it. After driving several hours on the second day, my cruise cuts out. I have to turn it on again and set the speed and it works for several hours more without any problems. It did not happen again for another day. In other cars that I have owned, sometimes the cruise would cut out when you go over a sharp dip on the road, all I had to do then is only reset speed. With my Edge, the road is flat and smooth and I didn't touch the brake when the cruise cut out. Has anyone experienced this kind of behavior and what was done about it? Thanks.

I have 09 ldt awd and it never happened to me . You might have touch the gas. But it is not making sense that you cannot go back to the original speed ... I would take it to the dealer.

  8. Hey guys,

Unforunately I don't have many options for other dealerships here in MT. The closest large dealership is 90 miles away and owned by the same person as the one in my city. I could go closer if I want to use a very small dealer I could get closer, 45 miles, but I doubt they would be any better due to their much smaller volume of cars - not to mention satisfying me isn't going to be their top priority since I bought the car at a different Ford dealer. I know around here most dealers will give top priority to their own customers before someone else's. That leaves my with driving over 160 miles (one way) for another large dealer to try it out and see if they can do a better job, which I have my doubts on. I'm trying to be patient because as some point I would think the dealer is going to get sick of seeing this car in and get it fixed. Not to mention I really don't want to incur the cost of that trip, time off work, perhaps a motel, meals, etc just to try a dealer that far away. I've been trying to push them for a new PTU and axle in case there is some small defect they can't see when they check it out, but Ford is telling them to keep trying seal kits. I do know they are using the latest one. Supposedly Ford has yet another design they are working on, but it has not been released yet. I do question the abilities of their techs to a point, but on the same hand they said they have fixed many of them with one fix and have never had one in as many times as mine for it. I think this is basically one of those deals where they don't really care how much it comes in as long as they are getting paid - by Ford for now. I can't believe I'm saying this, but my wife and I still really like the car except for this problem. I'm wondering if my only option is going to be to "test drive" another more expensive vehicle while mine is in the shop next time and hold it for ransom until they replace everything in the darn thing!!

Oh yeah and it's leaking again....8th time a charm??? I'll be calling them on Monday to get it in...

I would call the head office and let them hear it. That's crazy, like I said, I had mine done year ago and problem solved.

  9. Used car dealers don't know everything that's wrong with the car or what is about to break when they sell it. That's why they sell warranties.

If you choose to buy it without a warranty AND you choose NOT to have it checked out by a mechanic prior to purchase then this one is squarely on YOUR shoulders, not the dealer.

If the dealer was willing to "stand behind it" then they would have offered a 30 day warranty. And you would have paid extra for that.

I don't see where the dealer did anything wrong here.

just get the seals changed no problem ....

  10. OK - Back in for 7th attempt at repair...

I don't understand ....Is the PTU the same on 07 - 10 models? Why some folks need this thing fixed so many times and some , like myself had it done once and that's it...

  11. I did work with Ford hand in hand for four years as Supplier Quality Engineer........and there is a big difference how suppliers are picked in Japanese vs Americans. Quality requirements for Americans are more stringent then Japanese or Europeans.

But Kirby looks like you have a lower expectation and go give your money to them.

I just hope it works out for me.

I cannot believe someone would praise Toyota after so many recalls and safety issues. I find designs of Japanese and European cars very outdated except few like Audi's and Volvo's. I've mine 09 LTD AWD for 2 years now and had no problem except PTU seals repaired under warranty. My Brother in low has Toyota Camry and had to replace the whole engine from bolt falling in, while changing oil at Mr. Lube. My uncle has 09 Corolla and just 2 weeks ago the car accelerates at stop lights while waiting for green. He had to step on the breaks very hard to avoid accident. After that the dealer sad they've never heard of that happening. He had to wright detailed letter to Toyota head office here in Ontario and explain how it happened. I truly believe the Japanese car makers had it good for too long now and they are cutting corners in production.

  12. My Edge SEL AWD was built at the end of May 2010. I was kind of expecting the PTU problem after I came to this forum. And I tried to be gentle on the gas pedal to avoid in the AWD mode for a long time. But so far the PTU is fine (knock the wood). Although I live in cold Canada, it has been under 0'c since 2 months ago; and it was under -20 for the past one week. I wish Ford has fixed the PTU problem since 2010.

I never heard 2010 PTU problems , I think since mid 09 the PTUs are OK....

  13. Yeah, it was the newest repair in Feb also. In fairness, It doesn't actually drip on my garage floor, but I do get the burning smell, so it isn't as bad of a leak. I'm just frustrated, obviously, by having to have had it repaired so many times. The last seal did look much different than the rest of them and I don't have word yet which seal is leaking this time, could be driver side whereas the rest have always been passenger side. I was hopeful when it made it through the first few cold spells, but it didn't appear to hold.

I would just go back and get it fixed again. This repair is part of the extended warranty.

  14. You may be on to something there. The problem mainly seems to happen in cold weather. I also have the problem. It happens every time the car is driven in cold temperatures ie. 0 or below. I won't have the problem all summer long, but once winter hits here in MT, bingo it starts leaking again. I've had it fixed 5 times and it is leaking again - I'm just waiting to get it in...again. Driving conditions and/or how you drive it don't seem to have any effect.

There were numerous seals repairs released in the past. The way I understand it is any repairs after January 1st, 2010 should be OK. That's when Ford finely spent some money and design good seals. Now question is if your dealer had some of the old seals in stock and used them the leak could reappear. I had mine done February 2010 and so far had no problems, even with -20 C not too long ago ...

  15. My wife and I are considering a 2007 Ford Edge AWD SEL. We test drove it tonight. My wife drove for 3-5 miles with no issues. When back in rainy parking lot, we noticed a noise/feel from the rear tire area. Sounded almost like something shifting, or a "thud", not a terribly loud noise, but noticeable none-the-less.

Anyways, we re-created the sound for the dealer (Ford dealership) and he took it for a ride and then told us that feeling or noise was the AWD kicking in when the wheels were "slipping". We weren't going very fast when we noticed the shift/noise.

Can anyone please let me know if this explanation is accurate, and if it is an issue, or is it just normal? Obviously we do not want to be buying a faulty vehicle, but we also don't want to be over-reacting. We plan on calling around to some other dealers tomorrow and asking if this phenomenon is common with the AWD. It has 30k miles on. Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi, we have 09 AWD and I never notice any noise to engage the AWD system. I even drove on the ice to test the AWD system. Be careful before you buy ..

  16. My 08 SEL with 29.5k just went in the shop with the same cam sensors problem for the 3 day teardwn/repair. I already went thru a nightmare with the PTU seal (7th repair is holding for the last 12k miles). As much as I like the car have to consider cashing in the chips when I get it back. We shal see....

I would say some of the members here are overreacting. Go to any of the other manufacturers forums and see the problems people are having. Recently I visited Mercedes Benz site and some folks are having lot of problems with transmission beside other things. :yup:

I got my service appointment this morning at 8:00am. An hour and a half later, the service rep agrees with me that both problems are related and that they have to order a "JUNCTION BOX" to fix this problem. Once the junction box is installed, they will have to reprogram. Estimated time is ????. They don't know how long it will take. I love this vehicle, but I am disappointed because of this early problems.

I would not worry about it, thinks happen. I had some small problems with my 09. After they got few bugs out, I have not had problem for while.

  18. Yes, they screwed up whether it was a last minute hardware or software change or lack of testing or (more likely) they chose to ship it with know bugs planning to fix it within a few weeks.

But a class action lawsuit won't get it fixed any faster.

There are always problems with first year models. After hearing all the sync issues, I will hang on to my 09 for while till all the bugs are taken care of. :heartbreaker:

  19. I bought a 2010 2 months ago and required the dealer to put in a backup camera or I would not buy the car. They took it to a third party (Car Toys I believe) and had the camera installed. It did take 6 different (and 10 days total) for them to get it to work correctly. First, there was a coding issue for it to work with the OEM Touch screen, and then there was a wiring issue and then a faulty camera. It has been working for about a month now without issue.

How much would it cost? Do you know?

  20. I am getting mine fixed as we speak,NOT under warranty. 4 and a half hours labour @ $118. per hour, parts around $300. plus 14% tax.Do the math $966.78 lucky me.I own a 97 F150 4X4 never had to do anything to except normal maintenance, brakes,a starter, altenater.Nothing else the motor has 150,000 mile and run great! Should have bought another truck

I'm surprised the repairs aren't under the warranty. I was told the PTU is part of the power train so it's under the extended warranty ....
