2007-2010 MKX Headlight Disassembly

Recommended Posts

I am kicking around an idea for a retrofit, but before I go and take apart a $600(+) assembly for some exploratory surgery, I was wondering if anybody else has any experience with this.

Has anybody ever taken one apart or seen a schematic/cutaway diagram of one of the assemblies. It seems there is a lot of confusing information out there. When you lookup an MKX headlight on eBay - people claim there is an HID ballast mounted to the underside. My guess is that is actually a power module for the adaptive headlamps, but who knows?

Anyway, I have lots of questions that would be answered if somebody has ever taken one apart or is able to get their hands on a used/broken assembly. The cheapest one I can find on eBay is $75 plus shipping.

I would love to know:

- How is the projector assembly mounted (with the adaptive headlamp assembly)?

- What are the dimensions of the projector assembly (will a replacement projector from retro solutions or the retrofit source fit in there without interfering with the adaptive headlamp mechanism)?

- What is the diameter of the projector lens (will a replacement lens from the retrofit source fit in there without interfering with the adaptive headlamp mechanism)? I'm thinking if the projector is decent maybe just replacing the lens would be a big improvement.

- Does the projector assembly have a cutoff shield that moves (like a bixenon assembly)?

Just throwing it out there. If you have seen it / done it, please let me know of your experience. If you have photos that you can post, that would be awesome. Finally, if anyone knows where you can get your hands on a used/broken assembly (under $50) please let me know.

Thanks for the help!
