  1. Does anyone here know what might happen if the Ptu runs out of fluid? My edge has had 3 ptus and several seal kits. A few weeks ago i thought that i smelled the burning smell again. It was so faint though that i thought it was just my imagination so i never gave it much thought. I am unable to notice if it drips onto my driveway becase my driveway is dirt.It is the begining of mud season here in Maine and my driveways is always wet. I did look under the edge and noticed that the boot had been wet and there was dirt sticking to it. Not sure if it was just some residual from two months ago when they replaced the last PTU. Well today driving home from dropping the son off at school there was a horific noise coming from the pass front area. Same side that has been giving us all the problems. It sounds like a metal on metal grinding noise. It happens at slow speeds and high speeds and stops when the edge stops. Not happy about it one bit! just figured i throw this out there and see if anyone has had this noise. I am sure that it stems from all the repairs over the last 1yr and a half. One other little tid bit the last time the edge was in getting its 3rd Ptu they had to break if not cut off the tye rod on the pass side because it was so rusted on. Thank god for all the crap they put on the winter roads. Jason 07 Edge buildt on 3/07
  2. I havent been on here in a while but i dropped by to check out other peoples PTU problems, seeing that mine is in for its 2nd ptu. 3rd or 4th time its been in for the burning smell i really cant remember. I dropped mine off a week ago after going all summer without the burning smell. Well along comes winter and sure enough burning smell again. I spoke with a manager at the dealership about the lemon law. He told me the same thing that we all know who has this problem. three times of the same problem... blah blah blah, then to contact the attorney general and then they give ford a 4th time to fix it and if the 4th time doesnt work then ford has a "buy back" program. So to make a long story short i am going to get copys of all of the service that has been done to make sure it matches the paper work that i have. Not to disappoint anyone but i hear that the PTU unit is on back order again. Good thing i have a brand new Nissan titan they gave me to drive because who knows how long ford will have me edge this time! Jason

    Oil Prices

You would think that it would be basic economics. But when the people who have all the oil hate our way of life and dont care about economics or us for that matter, you'll never know what they will do, or wont do.
  4. We have had our edge for about 4 months and it has 2500 miles on it and here is what problems we have had: >burning smell.............seal replaced first then Ptu replaced only onced so far >moisture in booth taill lights.............replaced. >a pilar moulding not installed right, not connnected to dash....... replaced. >driver seat sqeaking >drivers door sqeaking and a new one as of today. Klunking in the front end going over bumps. So loud once that we thought the front wheels were going to fall off. I dont belive that i have heard anyone having this problem on here yet. If anyone has... what was the problem and what was the outcome? The edge is going BACK in the shop tomorrow 4 times in 4 months, not a bad ratio.
  5. I'm sure that if the dealership is big then they are way familiar with the problem. I bought mine at a small dealership in Maine and they had seen two prior to mine. More then likely you will be taking it back to have the whole ptu replaced after they try the easy/cheap way out. Maybe just replacing the seals on yours will do the trick, but i wouldn't hold my breath. Golfcart.. You are on your 7ptu? Thats just stupid, not to promising either. How long is it before you can claim it as a "lemon"? Dont they have a lemon law where you are?
  6. I just got our edge back with it's first new ptu a few days ago and i could have sworn that i still smell the same burning smell. I am just hoping that it is a little residual fluid left and it will go away. I was told by the service tech that the bulletin ford has for this is to replace the whole ptu ONLY after they have replaced the passenger axle seal. If that doesn't work (which it probably won't) then they will replace the whole ptu. So that means that you have to back at least twice and as i see on here with people on there 3rd ptu probably more to get the problem solved. I guess our time means absolutely nothing to ford along with just being a pain.
  7. Looks good.. I have an aftermarket hid kit in my f150 with lightning style headlights and it works great. Want the wife to get them in the edge but she doesnt want them. I think that the halogen lights in the edge have a great beam pattern and cut off. I often wondered what hids would look like in the stock housing . Do your hi beams still work? I sacraficed them in my f150 to get the hids, didnt want to spend the extra for the bi-xenon
  8. Mine started with only 1200 miles, well that is when i noticed it. My wife had said that it had been doing for a little while longer, but she just thought it was the new belts and hoses just burning off as well as i did when i first smelled it. i think that i am going to print out a copy of this post as well when mine goes back in. Probably wont have any affect either way though.
  9. Thats what the replaced in mine Joelop. It didn't do the trick in mine. Its going back in as soon as they get the rest of the trim parts in from the first time it was there. Good luck to ya and hopefully it solved the problem on yours, but I doubt it..
  10. After a week of our edge being in for service for the burning smell and other things wrong, we finally got it back. The dealership was quite sure that the burning smell was coming from the right front axle seal leaking, so they replaced it. DIDN"T do the trick. The smell is twice as bad if possible. The thing that kills me is that I told them that many others have the same problem and it was because of a problem with the PTU. So now they will be getting a very not so welcoming phone call first thing in the morning. Both of the tail lights were also replace due to lots of moisture in both. I was checking them out today....... Not put in correctly. They are not even connected to the side of the edge. they are only connected by the 2 bolts on the back, causing them to just flap in the wind at highway speeds. Not very happy with the dealership. This is also the first new auto that we have ever owned and its not going so well.
  11. I just dropped my edge off this morning for the burning smell, pass door handle not working properly, dash not put together properly, moisture in both taillight issues. But mainly for the burning smell. Just got a phone call back from the dealership. They said that mine was the right CV joint that was leaking causing the burning smell. I said that i know many people (from this forum) that have this same burning smell and its from the PTU. Service tech said the shaft comes out of the PTU and that is where its leaking from. Is this true? Tech told me that he ordered parts to fix the problem. He thinks that they will be at the dealership in a few days. Also said that I could come and get the edge and would call me when the parts were in and that it was ok to drive (even on long trips). Now i know from here that many others have been told NOT to drive there vehicles with the same issues that mine has. I wonder why the two different explanations to the same burning smell problem and why i was told it was ok to drive and others not?
  12. I know the dealer that we bought our edge from has 6 loaner cars that they own to give out, not sure what they are though. And if all the loaners are out then they pull a new car off the front line comparable to the car you own. We'll that is what the salesman told me anyways, we'll see...
  13. I'm going to bring mine in to the dealership next week to drop the bomb on them that my edge has this burning smell/leaking problem. We are in a bit of a warm spell this week here in New England and i highly doubt the smell would happen during the times that i want it too. Along with the burning smell i have a few other issues with my edge. Moisture in both taillights, outside pass door handle sticks in open possition, driver seat sqeaks. I figure they might as well fix them all if they are going to have it for as long as everyone says that have it for the PTU issue..
  14. i hope that ford doesnt start using this as a simple fix to the real problem, which is to either fix the seal or replace the whole PTU
  15. I have a 07 AWD Edge that has 1400 miles on it and we have noticed the burning smell on several occasionsin in the 2 months that we have owned it. Today after starting the car to let it warm up for about 5 min there was a strong burning smell coming from the vents. So I looked under the vehicle and there was few drips of pink fluid in the snow right under where the drive line is. Not too happy about it!
