So....my saga continues. Experiment with 93 octane gave only a temporary reprieve to the pinking before it returned. Went back to 87 regular octane and its back in all its glory (sounds like the proverbial bag of spanners when the engine is put under demand in low gear). Weekend trip to the hill country round Austin gave the engine some challenge and the pinking was worst it has ever been. Returned to dealer (4th attempt to fix) and this time they consulted with Ford. They have asked me to "baseline" the fuel my running three tanks of Shell or Exxon regular 87 octane - after which they will review again and decide what to do. Will let you know what happens after that.
Did anyone else pick up on the recent USA Today article that quoted a technical guru from Ford talking about the "octane sensors on the LKX and Edge that would soon become more widespread"?? - he went on to describe how that would allow the engines to tune automatically to the octane used for best performance and mpg. Sounded awfuly suspicious to me that such a system on my own Edge might well be close to the source for my pinking issues. Dealer knew nothing about it.
It's not "pinking" that would be a different forum.
:beerchug:
Don't worry about the pinGing because it's Fords motor 5 yrs/60K miles AND if you burn a hole in a piston after 60K you are well documented and WILL not have a problem getting your motor repaired.
Personally it would drive me crazy :angry2: and I WOULD fix it myself or get a reputable NON Ford shop to take a look at it.
Then IF they fix it take the bill to Ford.
A lot of dealerships like to throw parts at a problem, see if you can get them to change the O2 sensor, then
Crankshaft position sensor, then the Cam position sensor, etc, etc.
Note: Don't burn any bridges be civil but be persistent.
Good luck

Ford had that same retractable design on the Explorer 15 years ago - way before the Germans were even making SUVs. For some reason they chose not to design it into the Edge. Having had at least 2 vehicles with them in the past I don't miss them. When you need to drop the seats you have to remove and store the retracted cover which is a little annoying. Maybe they'll add them back with the mid cycle refresh.
Looked in the back of a Escape lately?
It just doesn't make sence to cut this corner  .

Don't they ever look at what they are trying to compete with?
Take a look at what the Germans do.

I think bezeerk is gone??
Looks like bezeerk can play CD's but can't play MP3 on a CD.
I use nero 7 to convert/burn to MP3 and don't have any trouble.
However I'm not putting MP3 on CD, just did a few to see if it worked.
I'm using a 2 gig drive in the USB.

I spent less than 60 seconds adjusting my mirrors ONE TIME. Tonight I watched a car come up behind me in the left lane. It went from my rear view to my side view mirror and when it disappeared from my side view mirror the front of the vehicle was even with my rear door and I could see it without even turning my head more than a couple of inches. If you don't believe that then I don't really care. Stop trying to rationalize everything.
I've been tought a little different method.
Keep your eyes moving
Look at the windshield mounted mirror, yep there's somebody behind me
Look forward
Look in the door mounted mirror, yep there's somebody back there
Look forward
Look at the windshield mounted mirror, nobody there
Look forward
Look in the door mounted mirror, yep there's somebody back there in the passing lane
Look forward
Look in the door mounted mirror, nobody there
Look forward
Turn on left sig
Start moving to left lane, LOUD HOONKING Lean forward look in door mounted mirror, yep there's somebody back there
Swerve back into lane
This isn't a very good description but you get the point.
You really need to be looking forward most of the time, don't look from one mirror to the other, PLEASE.... My wife might be making a emergency stop in front of you

ohhh man ablb.. akirby is gonna have a conniption fit when he sees what you did :do what:
anyway.. you really do not see a need for both mirrors if that 1 is soooo great?
These pictures were my first attempt and they did turn out pretty good.
Big enough blind spot (see pic's 3 & 4 in my post above) to hide a Chevy Blazer.
The camera was about where my wife's 5'6" eye would be.
I didn't change the passenger mirror, I haven't noticed a blind spot.
Plus I can't see the point in adding a convex mirror on top of a convex mirror .

so your saying there is not enough wire to pull the glass away, turn it around and unhook the pigtail plug? you must undo the pigtail plug at the same time you undo the tabs & with a screw driver?
Plenty of wire to pull the mirror a little way from the housing.

now that a few of you have pulled it off..
how about coming back in a few days and posting your thoughts about before/after on these mirrors? I would be curious to hear what you think.. worth the effort, work as well they seem to look like they would, any unexpected pitfalls?
Best 80 bucks I've spent in a long time! :D
This should be a TSB if not a recall. BUT NOT just the Edge/MKX most of the 4 door cars I've owned for the past decade at least have a big blind spot.
I have to lean forward and look around the post.
These 4 pictures are from a 6 picture burst on my XSi...Very revealing.

Mine will be here soon. Do you have any additions to the remove & install instructions posted here? I am a bit nervous about removing & destroying something on my mirrors. But if I can install roof racks & bug deflector, I am sure if I am careful I can do this also. Please post any updates.
thanks
Here's a picture that might help.
Don't forget to rotate the whole mirror towards the front then push the glass down and to the left or right.
Shine you flash light in and you'll see the tabs.
I found it helped to push a small screwdriver into the gap created when you pry the first tab open, you'll have to remove it after the second tab so you can rotate the glass for access to the other 2 top tabs.
Take your time and be gentle.
Then just wiggle the glass out, unhook the heater wires.
That small screwdriver will help with unhooking the Electrochromic plug.
Hope this helps

so i just bought a black 08 edge. i've been to the dealership more times than i want to count since i got it. I've had black cars before and never had a problem with what the service guy tells me are spiderwebs that "you just get on black vehicles" i'm not very vehicle saavy so any help would be appreciated, is he telling me the truth or just trying to shut me up because he knows that they aren't doing the best job that they could do or are using a crappy cloth which is causing the paint to look like it has tiny scratches all over it. it's very annoying. i just had the dealership put the "solarshield" on that says it's supposed to prevent streaking and swirls, yet there are swirls and straight "scratches" all over. help!!!
Sounds like their high school drop out make ready guy got a little carried away and used a buffer (this is the voice of experience speaking  ).
A good professional detailer should be able to buff the swirls out, unless he went all the way thru the clear coat (this is the voice of experience speaking ).

I ordered part # 9T4Z17K707D, this part # is for a 09 Edge Limited.
I'll be attempting to install this on my wife's 08 MKX.
Total price was $81.17 including sales tax.
If anyone ever sees a MKX with the "Blind Spot Mirror" please try to get the vin.
Thanks

Thanks ab
But my brother has owned a body shop for years and now manages one. He told me he never replaces the glass for this reason. He always replaces the entire mirror or sends it out. Guess I should have listened to him
OOPPSS sorry, I was not :poke:
Sometimes I forget that SOME forum's I visit have a zero tolerance for wit and humor.
I'm on my way to the Ford dealer, Thanks for the pictures they will help A LOT.

Hello again
Sad to say but...
I attempted to install the new mirrors today. Actually my brother did and before I could tell him to do the right side first in case it broke or had problems it was too late. I made a 150 mile trip to meet him at my fathers for a pre-Thanksgiving get together so I didn't want to drive home without a driver side mirror. Anyhow he had a hard time in getting enough room to see behind the mirror and as he was working the screwdriver to release the clips the mirror glass suddenly did pop off. Problem was that the disc attached to the motor where the new mirror would connect to also came off as in snapped off. It is very difficult to get these clips off, even after seeing just how it was held in and trying the other mirror my brother just had to stop in fear of that one breaking also. I now have a taped on left side mirror and will see if the motor can be replaced or just buy a complete left mirror assembly, hopefully an '09 if there is no change in design or mounting brackets.
The first picture will be the old mirror as it came off with the motor housing disc still attached. I also have 2 pictures of the back side of the new mirror showing the clips
Old mirror with the motor disc attached
New mirror
I have a friend just like your brother.
We try to keep ALL tools especially sharp ones away from him.

I work at a Ford Dealer and also have an SE Edge. The wiring harness does not have existing wiring for foglamps and does not have a plug-in harness or junction. What will have to happen is the switch will have to be changed, a relay purchased through parts, as well as the fog lamp plugs. Also, the bezels will be needed. My master technician say it is not that big of a deal, just time and a little money.
Even the 2009 does not offer a foglamp option for SE Edge. Whomever designed the wiring must be a union man. And stupid. One harness could have been designed, with plug in for foglamps. But that would have made too much sense.
Not union and not stupid HAVE YOU PRICED COPPER LATELY?

this should be a plug and play breeze to do...
BTW, I got to thinking.. not that I would, but I would think that the MKX auto dimming side mirror glass would also work in an Edge. On Edge's with auto dimming rear view mirror, the same sensor turns on the lights and dims the mirror and dims the navi... so I would think it would also dim a side view mirror if connected. the question is if the wiring/pins is/are in place. just like with the BAMR light panel being ready to be lit once the correct pins were found & wired up, I would be curious to see the wiring that leads to an Edge side view mirror and the wiring to a dimable MKX side mirror... I bet it can be done.
Bad news for the MKX.
I finally found a dealer, 1 out of 3 with some (2) 09 MKX's.
Same mirror as our 08 .
I'll be ordering a 09 Edge mirror Monday from my closest Ford dealer.

sand, good primer and paint would likely hold. sure powder coat would be better, but way more coin for sure.
IF they rattle, that is an easy fix also. a thin piece if rubber, like from a bike tire, cut & glued to fit into the recess would stop that.
I am sure there are a ton of better options out there, color you want and rattle free, but these were just a few and it gets the idea across.
my VW had some that had a plastic body with a metal ring and they were spring loaded, so no sound.
What about high heat paint? I've found it to be pretty chip resistant.

OK so now that we have that out of the way does anyone know the easiest way of removing and replacing the mirror glass?
I found this procedure pertaining to a 2004 F150 so maybe the Edge has it's own little trick (which I couldn't find)
1. Position exterior mirror glass in the full UP position.
2. Locate the notch at the bottom of the exterior mirror glass.
3. Release the mirror glass
Insert a long flat head screwdriver in the notch.
Push the screwdriver into the notch until the glass
is released.
Note: If equipped with heated mirrors disconnect the electrical connector from the exterior mirror glass.
Installation:
1. If equipped with heated mirrors, connect the electrical connector to the back of the mirror.
2. Position the exterior mirror glass onto the mirror motor.
3. Place one hand on the back of the exterior mirror housing and hand flat on the exterior mirror glass.
Press the mirror glass in place until fully seated.
You could place a towel between your hand and the mirror in case the mirror breaks while you are applying pressure.
Looks like Lex might know.
But you might as well wait until you get your mirrors, maybe you'll get instructions.
My 05 F250 instructions say to
"(1) On both electric and manually actuated mirrors push the convex spotter glass both upward and outboard as far as possible as shown in Figure A. (LH shown - RH opposite)
(2) Remove the Backing Plate assembly by inserting a screwdriver between the Backing Plate and the case rear (as shown in Figure A), and prise the backing plate from its pivot with the screwdriver."
No notch just push up/out and pry it off, the main mirror instructions are the same.

I'm thinking puddle lamps and heated mirrors will be the same package, can't have one without the other. This would mean that the wiring harness or connector would play a role. Maybe the "Limited" has a connector for power where as the others don't?
Just guessing here
Research research reserach I love it.
I'm always telling my friends "you can answer any question on the internet" but it's not helping much on this one.

I always find this subject interesting.
A friend says "I'VE GOT A BIG OLE 4X4 it says so right on the side."
Well maybe but there is a good chance it could be a 4X2 (my F250 as opposed to my neighbor's 4X1 F250 or his neighbor with a REAL 4X4 F250).

Has anyone removed Sirius?
I'm not wanting to add XM.
Note to Lex: Set the hook :beerchug:
ab

Do you have a Limited? I will be curious to see this goes for you guys.
I could see how heated mirrors matter, but not sure why having puddle lamps plays a role or not. the puddle lamps do not interact with the glass of the mirror like the heat does, so why would that matter. also, why would the passengers be more costly?
I'm wondering the same thing? Why so many mirrors?
After seeing them, I'm not going to change the passenger mirror

Haven't needed them.
Which is possibly/probably why the Edge/MKX has a reputation for not stopping very well.
Have you ever noticed the wheels on a BMW they ALWAYS have a LOT of brake dust on them.
