Why did we choose the Edge?
We take delivery of our 2008 Ford Edge Limited AWD tomorrow (Monday) morning. We had noticed the Edge in TV ads, in Consumer Reports, in the car mags, but we first tested the Buick Enclave, Honda CR-V and Fit, and gave a good look at the Toyota Prius. These cars were impressive in their own right, yet my wife kept looking at the MKX and the Edge. Our 2003 Buick Rendezvous was drawing fast toward 100,000 miles in less than five years. I think we could have gone to 150,000 miles, but we're both retired and wanted a new car.
We drove a 1972 Dodge Dart some 130,000, two Dodge Caravans to well over 125,000, and a Chevrolet Citation to over 100,000 (liked the concept, detested the car). We enjoyed a nice 1988 Honda Civic Wagon as well.
We bought a new 1968 Mercury Cougar, but, although the styling was quite attractive, the poorly engineered seat backs really soured us (a single support with all the weight of the back concentrated at that one point--ridiculous engineering!). We are pleased today to return to Ford to buy the very well designed Edge. We think it will serve us well for quite a long time. The moonroof is magnificent and the 20-inch wheels with the vapor silver metallic color give the car an imposing and serious stance. Our grandkids will really enjoy the headrest DVD entertainment centers. We would have preferred a backup camera, but we may have it installed after the warranty has expired, if we still think it's needed. We were getting 23 mpg highway mileage in our similar sized Buick Rendezvous with its four-speed transmission and 3.4 engine. The six-speed with Ford's far more sophisticated 3.5 should allow us to get even better mileage.
There have been a few complaints from others in these forums about the premium sound system. They are probably valid, but for almost all males past puberty, high frequency notes beyond 12,000-14,000 Hz grow increasingly difficult to discern. Besides, we prefer our home audio system to that of any car. We will see if the Edge woofer offers sufficient bass.
After 42 years of marriage, I trust my wife's taste in cars. I agree with her that this Ford Edge is one of Ford's best.
