securinu Posted June 18, 2007 Report Share Posted June 18, 2007 We only have 500 miles so we have filled up 2x so far and one time the gas nozzle came flying out when it clicked off sprayed gas all over the side and on my leg as i was standing next to it. Now before i get roasted yes i have filled many a car but the angle seems awfully odd to me . My wife hasnt filled yet as I magically get to drive it when its been low so far. Jillo79 Posted June 19, 2007 Report Share Posted June 19, 2007 This happened to me last week. Luckily I was washing the window and didn't get fuel all over me when the hose jumped out. This has never happened to me before. My Explorer did seem to have a different angle/better fit to the opening. I felt like a complete dummy so I'm glad this wasn't just me! I would put it down to user error or a really bad line shock (hammer) when it shut off. Maybe it wasnt far enough in and just sitting on the edge thus the shock knocked it off. BTW how come the pump was still discharging fuel when it made that jump to stop fueling, or was it that small amount of gas contained in the nozzle? Didnt think the angle was that bad, have left the handle in the car and cleaned the windows or held it by the car, but didnt feel any urge for it to jump out of the hole when it stopped. Well for 25 years and well over a million miles on 20 + vehicles it never happened to me either . Since another has replied here and my local dealer said they had another person complain of the same thing, and they have heard from other local dealers of the same problem. sim Posted June 21, 2007 Report Share Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) So what do you think is the issue, input hole too shallow, angled too low? Seems pretty bizarre to me that it would happen at all, however on most cars the nozzle only rests about an inch or so inside the hole - and really the resistance is the top of the nozzle hitting the top of the hole, the pivot being on the bottom of the nozzle and hole. As i said before, IF you didnt put it in far enough, a line shock from someone else stopping fueling or the nozzle you are using, might be enough to let it jump out. Guess i have been lucky so far, but i also make sure it plenty in there. Again i have driven at least 100 different cars in my time and nothing like this has happened, the angle of the Edge hole to the gas tank looks and feels just fine and pretty much the same as any other i have ever used in the past.
