Anyone have thoughts/suggestions on winter tires for a new Edge ST with the 21" wheels? I don't see many if any options available online for a winter tire that size.

I don’t understand why you would want to install winter tires, then in the spring remove them , and reinstall your summer tires.

Get some smaller ‘winter wheels/tires’ so you don’t have that hassle, plus rebalance, and possible/probable damage to the wheels. I would never go through that BS.

  2. Why........the hell would you buy the car with nice lookin BIGGER wheels and, NOT test drive it? And when I say ‘test drive’ thing means more than around the proverbial block????? And if the salesman would have sais something about the ‘time factor’, I would have immediately gone back to the dealership, and told him to figure out his lost commission factor, and gone to a different Ford dealer, made the deal, gone back to the first dealer salesman, and RUBBED IT UNDER HIS NOSE! I then would have brought it to the attention of the Sales Mananger/ Owner! You are spending thousand of $$$, and deserve better treatment period!!!!!!!

Where the hell are the ‘ Emogies’ ?????

To buy this car with the 21” wheels, and now are bitching / whining is not doing a thing for me, do feel sorry what so EVA! You do your reasurch BEFORE NOT AFTERWARD when a lot of $$$ are involved,. Have you heard of this concept??????

I have an Explorer Limited with 20” all season wheels/ tires. From the get go on signing the new car deal, I mentioned to my salesman that the first thing the will be done is a set of 265/40/22 Edge Sport, I now have the later versions with larger 285/40/22. I CANT TELL ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TWO IN INCREASE IN WHEEL SIZE!!! And it looks great, as 20” wheels look way to small on a bigger vehicle over a Edge.

Also got the same day full front end 3M Clear Bra (mirrors, just behind the top of the windshield, headlights/ fog lights, three quater of the top of the hood, full grill, and bumper plus the top of the rear bumper to protected when loading.

“Do it right the FIRST TIME” !!!

Were the hell are the Emogies, or is this Forum short of funds?

frank - CANADA ( your number one trading partner) ‘The Donald’ is out of touch, and four years won’t be that long, if he dosent get impeached first

I have the OEM 21 wheels 265/40/21 Pirelli's. I was wondering if dropping down to OEM 20" 245/50/20 would make a noticeable difference? If not, would I have to go to 19"? Second question. If I change rims, can I re-use the TPMS in the current OEM 21" rims on the new smaller rims. Any help, comments, suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ed

  3. With a stock 40 series sidewall, how much shorter are you thinking to bring it to the same height as the spare (which I believe is a 18" wheel). Your logic won't hold water.

The 'space saver' spare is just that. Even a small 245/60/18 tire will not fit in the spare cavity.

'You could go with a slightly shorter sidewall on the 22" tires to keep them the same diameter if you're buying new tires'.

I think the question was could he swap out the temporary spare tire so it matches the height of the new tires.

There is a 1.3 inch height difference between the factory sport tires and the SE tires. I don't know if they supply a different spare from the factory or not - that's only a 4% difference.

Perhaps someone with the factory 22s can provide their spare tire specs for comparison. I couldn't find them on fordparts.com.

You could go with a slightly shorter sidewall on the 22" tires to keep them the same diameter if you're buying new tires.

  4. It's got nothing to do with the wheels being 22" ( they were not an option, but standard on the 'Sport Edge') but from drivers that don't know how to park by a curb, and park by 'feel'. Some people just don't care!

Your 'terminology' is incorrect re: the narrowest tires possible from the factory'. You are trying to say 'the lowest profile tire' which in this case is 40. Going with a bigger wheel (22) you have to go with a lower profile tire ( from a (50) on 20" wheels, to keep the 22" tire package at the same overall height as the 20" package.

Some SUV's I have seen are running 35, or even 30 which is too low profile for a 5000 lbs. plus truck. While it may look cool ( and you definetly have to lower the vehicle, cause of the increased wheel gap), but such a low profile tire( 35/30) , which are really meant for sports cars, again not heavy trucks looking for your favorite pot hole to make round wheels square.

I have had 22's on my truck for years, and have no curb rash either, I know how to drive, and would freak to find a scratch. (They are $6000 @ the dealer, plus tax)

    I have 19/20 HRE.'s on my Vette

    19/19 on my BMW.

    No rash...

The 2010 sport models had those 22" wheels as an option. When we were out shopping for one, we looked at about 6 of them with those wheels and *every* wheel on all of them was curbed, and curbed bad. Rash all the way around every wheel.

I started looking more closely at it after about the 4th one with destroyed wheels, and noticed Ford put the narrowest tires possible on there from the factory- so much so that the lip of the wheel is the part that sticks out the furthest. The tire sidewall slopes slightly inward as you go up from the bead of the wheel. It actually looks really bad once you notice how narrow the tire is compared to the wheel. I'd recommend putting tires on there that are wider than OEM if you haven't already, or just don't get close to any curbs with it.

We ended up buying one with the 20" wheels because all the 22"s were ruined by the previous owners.

  5. You have to NOT know what you're doing when you are ordering your 'ADAPTERS' (that's what they are called). Having them stick out a mile past the fender lips, and then post this dribble that the incorrect spec adapters ' helped a tad'! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Very odd guy! Find his post with the pics of his wheels/tires sticking out. Read, all the BS he posted, even admitting that he made a mistake in ordering the the wrong thickness, plus he had a machinist that would trim them down for him, or post them up here to sell.!!

I hear banjo music in the background.

How can adding wheel spacers make the car ride better?? :headscratch: I don't get it...

    Claude.

  6. You were looking at Mickeys cause your car makes 800hp? ?

...and you want 21's designed for a 'Bentley' because...???

They have since gone down. But I wouldn't ride on a 600+ UTQG rating if paying out my own pocket. So I would never buy the Verde's listed. Shit I was looking for Mickey Thompsons for my own car. I never said ALL 21s are $700. I said the ones I WANT areCapture.png

  7. "...but that's killing performance".

What performance are you speaking of??? Are you burying the Edge in tire smoke cause the stock tires arent 'hooking' ? ???

I like to get my power to the ground so I'm not running a hard compound tire, some of you might like that 600+ treadwear rating but thats killing performance

  8. How bout getting the 'correct' wheel/tire/adapter setup in the first place, unless of course if someone is going for that 'red neck' look they won't need those fender flares.

Unfortunately your $400 quick fix idea won't fly cause it is a Edge we're talking about, not a pickup truck...they don't make them. ?

There's always these if you want that stick out to not stick out

  9. The last pic shows the cut studs flush with the 'adapter'. 'Spacers' are disks in different thickness that are slipped onto the studs up to 'I think' a thickness of 3/8", but you would have to install longer studs. Call Motorsport Tech, ask for 'Lenny' for all the facts. So going a1/2" wider, up to I'd say 3/4" max will involve what I mentioned. Going wider will make you wheels/tires stick out past your fenders which looks cheesy, plus in bad weather will sling crap along both sides of your car! The only other way to make a wider track is to buy new wider wheels.

Too Thick Makes Them Stick Out...not cool!

So you had to modify your OEM 22" Edge wheels to get the wheels to fit on the spacers or had to modify the hubs? I have a 14 Edge Sport with the same wheels. Either way I wasn't really looking to to have to modify anything significantly. Trying to stick with mostly bolt on parts for when resell inevitably happens.

  10. I have H&R springs on my BMW, but went with http://www.motorsport-tech.com for my 'ADAPTORS'.This is a company that 'makes 'hub centric' to order adaptors'.

Its very important to know all your specs before ordering. What model Edge do you have, what are the wheel/tire sizes, are you sticking with the stockers? You will most likely have to cut the stock studs flush with the adaptors for the wheel to fit flush with the adaptors. Some aftermarket wheels have divits where the stock studs can fit into, but don't think thats the case on oem wheels, not mine.

I have an 2012 Explorer Limited, with Edge Sport 22'' wheels running 285/40 tires.

The wheels are nine inch wide but were still not flush with the fender. I ordered F 3/4", R 1.0"

  11. READ my post again!

The original oem Sport 22's were 8.5", with 265/40 tires!

The latter ones are 9.0", with 265/40 tires.

I have both these wheel sets, and presently run a 285/40 tire on the 9.0" version.

I would not recommend a '35' on a heavy truck, unless you want to be on a first name basis with your tire dealer!

'35' aspect ratio tires are for lighter sporty CARS like Mustang/Camaro.

I have 345/25/20 tires on the back of my Vette on 13" wheels, everything inside the fenders!

Im not worried about the gap im going to lower it once i get the tires im more concered about the tire width. The ford dealership told me the 22" sport wheel is 9" with the 265 and my wheel is 8.5" and alot of websites say 8.5" is to narrow for a 265. I wanna see what tire size people are using with a 8.5" wheel on 22's.

  12. "A few extra inches"????

What exactly are you thinking of?

Just curious, has anyone put on the H&R wheel spacers to add a few extra inches to their width? Was really more curious to see what it looks like..

  13. The original oem Sport wheel was a 8.5", with 265/40 tire. You have nothing to worry about if you stick with a 40 aspect ratio tire. With a '35' you will be looking at possible bent rims, plus a bigger gap between your fender/tire unless you lower it.
