I have a 2011 Edge awd v6 and an Explored Ecoboost with 2,600 miles. Road tests on both report that the payback for the Ecoboost (a $995 option) is about 3 years. On recent 1,500 mile trips my Edge got ~23 mpg (summer gas) while the Explorer got ~25 mpg (winter gas). The Explorer is larger and heavier than the Edge, so an Ecoboost Edge should do at least as well. Both engines are excellent, but a couple of mpg and longer range are a free bonus if you keep your vehicle 3 or more years. The real question is if you can live without all wheel drive. If you can, test drive an Ecoboost!
