  1. I have a 2011 Edge awd v6 and an Explored Ecoboost with 2,600 miles. Road tests on both report that the payback for the Ecoboost (a $995 option) is about 3 years. On recent 1,500 mile trips my Edge got ~23 mpg (summer gas) while the Explorer got ~25 mpg (winter gas). The Explorer is larger and heavier than the Edge, so an Ecoboost Edge should do at least as well. Both engines are excellent, but a couple of mpg and longer range are a free bonus if you keep your vehicle 3 or more years. The real question is if you can live without all wheel drive. If you can, test drive an Ecoboost!
  2. Changes? Other than the 2.0 Ecoboost could you list them or provide a link?
  3. I agree. In April my '08 Limited was at the body shop for a door ding. I asked about the car wash. They said my paint was excellent. The Edge rarely missed a week at the cloth strip car wash.
  4. When the climate control on my '11 Edge is on the pressure in the cabin builds quickly. It is irritating and sometimes hurts my ears and causes a minor drum like rumble. Cracking a window stops the problem but is noisy. Does the cabin vent? Where? Would it be feasible to open or make a vent? My '08 Edge did not have this problem.
  5. UPDATE... Dealer can not find a problem but acknowledges the noise. I'm going to try another dealer. I did find a way to reduce the noise; that is, put the climate control in recirculate or crack a window. The high pressure caused by the fan definitely hurts the ears and amplifies the rumble. I'll do a separate past on that matter.
  6. Great suggestion! I called my dealer. They will check the motor mount and exhaust on the 25th. I'll post the result. Thank you!
  7. Interesting...my wife hears the sloshing in the tank as you describe it. The dealer did remove, check and re-install the tank, buy maybe there is a ground-out there?
  8. You are 100% right! Any other Ideas as to the cause?
  9. Any help appreciated. My friends won't ride in the car. The rumble is that irritating!
  10. My dealer has never charged for key programming...including my after-market flip key. It takes 2 minutes!
  11. Dynamat is expensive. I'll look into Quiet car
  12. My guess is that you are right. I assumed my dealer checked that. It's been in 7 days trying to find the cause. My car was built around the time Ford modified the roof structure in February. I wonder if they missed something on my car during the transition. Tapping the roof does not reveal any unusual sound.
  13. Thanks. Very helpful and not that hard to check. From day one my brother questioned the engine mount/subframe. He has an '11 Edge SEL which is very quiet.
  14. Thanks for your thoughts . Makes sense. The dealer is willing to keep looking and would install the Dynamat . They agree my car is unusually loud. What is odd is that it is only a particular low frequency that is loud. It is otherwise quiet! I will look for a missing plug or grommet.
  15. I appreciate your response. Your thoughts echo the advice I got from a retired zone rep. Has anyone had experience with Dynamat? For $200 - $300 I could have a car audio place dampen the doors and floors. If my problem is general loudness will this make a noticeable difference? any advice is appreciated.
  16. After driving my brother's '11 Edge and every '11 Edge on the dealer's lot, it is clear that my '11 is much louder. It is also much louder than my '08 Edge. My former post complained of a rumble or harmonic, But after driving these other cars I note they produce the same sounds just at much lower and acceptable levels. It's not wind or road noise but low frequency engine, drivetrain and suspension noise. Luckily the dealer can hear it too. They have tried many fixes: remove and rebuild the fuel tank, replaced the tires with a different brand (helped suspension noise a little..did not affect other sources), Swapped 20" wheel/tire (Similar result as different tire), removed the subwoofer (possible harmonic...no help), removed spare tire, checked interior and exterior panels, heat shields, etc. Nothing works. They are calling the rep for help. WHY IS MY EDGE LOUDER THAT YOURS?
  17. Final update. Given the lack of response to my post, I assume this is a rare issue. Removing the subwoofer and force balancing the tires did nothing. The dealer swapped the 18" Michelins for 18" Continentals. The tire swap seemed better initially. When the tires warmed up the noise was the same. And there is still a loud booming sound (like a kettle drum) when hitting some bumps. on undulating pavement and at low speed when the engine is at low rpms and the ac kicks in or the shifter is moved in and out of drive. The car goes to the dealer today, I have asked Ford to replace it.. I loved my '08. and my brother's '11. My '11 is loud and irritating. I hate driving it!! UPDATE!! Tried adding 36 square feet of Dynamat Extreme. The Edge is quieter but the rumble...at idle and over undulating pavement. remains. Curiously, the exhaust note outside of the car is the same frequency. I think there is some large panel which is picking up the sound. My brother's '11 has the same exhaust note but no boom and rumble. The dealer is trying to get a Ford engineer to help. I loved my '08 Edge. The '11 is so loud that I will no longer drive it. If it can't be fixed I'll dump it asap. It's not just the noise but an irritating penetrating boom. For $39.000. it sounds like an empty panel van. 10 days in the shop and no progress. AND YES the Ford mechanic hears it too, ANY HELP! This can't be the only loud Edge!
  18. No luck on eliminating what I now know is a harmonic noise. I will not drive the car! My wife is not sensitive to the frequency so she doesn't care. She is disappointed that our '11 Edge is louder than the '08 we traded in. The dealer will be trying again next week. Frankly, I don't want it back. My brother (who is an audiophile) is convinced that the subwoofer is defective and is passively radiating a harmonic. He has a '11 Edge without the subwoofer but with the same tires. His car is much quieter than mine. The dealer did not agree but will pull the sub next week. Help!?
  19. Update! The dealer swapped 20' wheel/ tires for my 18"s. Sound was 95% gone! Still a slight harmonic rumble that last second before stopping or when placing in park or from park to drive. The "boom" with the 18"s is present on undulating pavement...so its not bumps but change in rate of movement that results in the harmonic rumble or boom. The dealer is reluctant to check the motor mounts...saying there would be other signs of a bad motor mount. Did not remove the subwoofer (to see if it is passively delivering a harmonic}. The dealer wants to try a "force balance" of my tires. The fact that no one else has experience this is not good news in trying to find the cause. I appreciate all suggestions!
  20. Does not need a dual filament. A shutter in the headlight assembly opens for high beam.
  21. Thanks for your suggestions. The dealer carefully checked the exhaust system, removed and rebuilt the gas tank, checked all heat shields, checked interior trim, and inspected wheels and spare. I am surprised that others have not noticed this. The harmonic boom is very grating and loud. I am now sensitized to it. A retired Ford zone official had some good horror stories about harmonic problems...including a Pinto wagon fixed with a ball peen hammer. The car is much louder than my identical 2008 Edge. ALL ideas are welcome!
  22. There is a semi-circular shield which pivots out of the way for high beam. That is the noise you hear. The bulb does not move.
  23. Good idea! When I called the dealer they were very happy to try. The mechanic had suggested this as an option. If the problem is harmonic a different wheel & tire should reduce or eliminate the noise.
  24. UPDATE After 2 days got the vehicle back... The booming might be worse...like an empty trailer. Sounds like the rear tires are at 50 pounds of pressure. A low frequency rumble or harmonic! The mechanic noticed a similar but quieter noise on a Limited with the 18" wheels (like mine). The same car with 20"s was quiet. I drove them both and agree. I drove a 2010 and 2008 with the 18' tires. Both were quiet. I really regret trading in my '08. other than this noise the car is great. I can't believe no one else has this issue!
