  1. Dropped mine off yesterday morning. They gave me an XLT F-150 to drive. Noticeably larger but also more solid. No weird pops and noises from the windshield/dash area.

Gauge cluster is better too. I like the simple middle screen with the two gauges to the side. It has the 2.7EB too. Getting the same if not better mileage too with the auto stop/start.

I agree about the gauge cluster. Looks like a freaking three year old (now be sure to use every crayon color in the box, Johnny) designed it in the Edge. I thought I could live with it, but I hate it.

Good luck with your repair/replacement for your Edge.

  2. Hi CapeDave and others of you who have contributed here!

I'm sitting at the dealership. I also had a tire with a nail in it when I took my car in. The Service Manager thought the fault message came from a low inflated tire and I was getting the brush-off.

But, thanks to some photos I took, and this forum I came with information. I gave him some of the codes that others have shared. He's on his computer now. I'll update what happens. At least he's taking this seriously now. Thanks all for the help!

Good work! They should be paying you for helping :)

  3. Yeah I do agree with that glad I don't have snow, hope you clean your door sills occasionally noticed the way the doors are designed they hold water and dirt in the bottom of them asking for rust imo. I work in IT and the amount of issues we need to call software companies to patch are like did you even test this with your brains.

    Malcolm

Thanks for the heads up, I will clean the sills! Yes, also IT, I work with websites. All work a whole lot better than Ford Adaptive Steering :)

  4. Doubt I could pull that off but don't want too, love the power and the ride of this vehicle when its working fine. Things I have gotten sure makes the car look bad but I have enjoyed it on multiple road trips up to this point. I have over 13k miles now. I find it also extremely safe. I came from a 2002 Celica GT that did not even have ABS let alone stability control (or torque for that matter). I find the edge even corners closeish which is impressive considering the GT was on BC BR's.

    Malcolm

Agree. I am using mine in the snow and I like how it drives. Now that the steering is fixed. Nevertheless, it is not an acceptable issue on a car of this price. Should have been tested more.

  5. Just got my wheel assembly replaced and I have to say the new wheel is not even real leather this time and the stalks feel cheap as well as the buttons, wtf man. It also is not as straight this time it is turned slightly to the left. I have not checked if the horn works. But the biggest issue I think is that in the adaptive steering menu both settings for sport and normal are now greyed out and I can not select them and sport and normal both have light steering. Should I bring it back to the dealer immediately? Has anyone else noticed the cheaper feeling wheel? It does say they reset my toe and trim but now I think that screwed up the computer wheel calibration as I actually have to turn into the crown of the road to stay straight.

    Malcolm

Ouch. Sorry to hear this. I did not get my whole wheel replaced, just the clock spring and some modules. So I cannot speak to the difference of the wheel.

But generally, it should be exactly the same (or better) except for it should work :) So, yes, take it right back. I am so sick of cars that have to have the wheel crooked to drive straight for any reason ever. God luck. Personally, I think it is buy back time for those who desire it.

  6. Hello everyone. New here. Just dropped off my our vehicle due to this very adaptive steering fault issue. The light has been on for some time now. The dealership told us today that it would be at least a month to get a new steering wheel and column in. We have the 2016 Edge Sport model. Can anyone familiar with the issue summarize or bullet point the past 14 pages worth of information by chance? I saw something about a clock spring. I want to make sure the dealership fixes this properly the first time around and I don't have a ton of time right now to read through the whole thread. I would really appreciate it.

-also, the dealership is not sure if they can find us a loaner car for us. I have no clue what we will do as we must have another car and coming out of pocket for a rental for at least a month is not an option either.... anyone have to fight them on this issue? Thanks again.

I got a loaner thru them they used Enterprise rental, so they can ALWAYS get you a loaner of some sort :) However, my loaner was only for a day, while they were actually working on it. I drove the damn thing for weeks with the error message showing.

I believe that the current best fix is what you are getting. A full steering wheel/assembly replacement.

I think but am not sure that includes the clock spring. You may want to double check me on that.

I myself got the clock spring module/software update fix and all is running very good. Feels like better than new.

  7. Add me to the list of unhappy Edge Titanium owners. I have 4852 miles on my Edge, and I've seen the Adaptive Steering fault message several times, but hadn't taken it seriously until today.

I take my car in tomorrow for the first time. I love my car, and I've loved the adaptive steering feature!

I sure hope I'm treated well at the dealership. My husband is disabled and I'll be on my own there.

I've taken notes from this forum. Thanks to all whom contributed!

Sorry about the circumstances, but nevertheless, welcome to this thread. We feel your pain! I think you should be OK at the dealers because at least we have made a big enough fuss here that the issue is forefront and good knowledge of it has been gained. I would push for a whole new steering wheel assembly. That seems to be the current fix.

  8. Got my MKX back yesterday. Apparently the actual procedure to replace the steering wheel doesn't take much longer than a couple of hours, as everything is very modular. Having a hard time discerning if my adaptive steering is actually functioning or not though. I think that it is. Unlike the Edge, in the MKX, there is no configuration option in the menu system for it, it's just always on if present.

Actually, even in te Edge there is no way to turn the adaptive feature off. Just change it from Normal to Sport. It is also always on.

  9. Alpha testers are usually in house and get paid. Beta testers are usually public and do not get paid. It is very likely that the system was indeed beta tested thoroughly by the quality control experts. After all, this issue has still remained isolated in nature as we have not seen any mobs with pitchforks the way we saw when the Yamaha v8's started failing in the 96-99 Taurus SHO's. The difference is that with any new technology, there will be a learning curve involved with the manufacture and assembly processes. There are 3 possible fixes according to the TSB. Only one indicates a complete defect requiring a complete replacement of the wheel. While it still makes me very nervous to have something like this, I have fallen in love with this as it makes driving in tight underground parking garages and tight city streets very easy. Someone will always have to take one for the team in the form of early adopters. Be glad most of you guys were instrumental in the development of the 3 TSB's that will benefit other fellow early adopters who potentially could still have this issue. You guys have done a good service for the enthusiast community and your successes are why this amazing feature is now being offered on the 2017+ Superduty trucks!

Well spoken. We may just have to accept that we have "taken one for the team" and let that be our satisfaction.

One point, in software, often beta testers are given a free copy of what they test. This can be as high as a $1000 value or more, depending on the software being tested. But I think we all for sure deserve a nice FORD baseball hat :)

  10. Actually, I believe the active steering system does use a mechanical linkage if I am not mistaken. That was one of the unique aspects to Ford's active ratio steering system compared to the competition. Ford developed their system utilizing a set of gears inside the steering wheel itself that does all of the work. If Ford was using a steer by wire system like some high end luxury cars, you sure as hell can bet I would not have bought this vehicle. The thought of a steer by wire system would freak me out when I barely even trust these drive by wire systems with the electronic throttle bodies. Ford's design is pretty unique and is a way of doing adaptive active ratio steering in a way no one else even considered. A German company makes it, but Ford owns a few patents on it.

There is no end to this intrigue surrounding the "Adaptive Steering Warning!" issues :) That is good stuff. All said, I think I would have preferred a light power boost rack and pinion steering assembly :) LOL.

Does anyone else here think that Ford maybe owes us something for the time wasted regarding this issue which for sure should not really have been released? In the real world, beta testers 1. get paid and 2. are informed of their beta tester status. I am thinking 2 car payments would be good and possibly a buy back offer.

  11. If you're in the mindset of a mechanical steering linkage, then that kind of photo certainly would be disturbing. The adaptive steering, as I understand it, has no mechanical linkage. Drive by wire, basically. Wherever the computer determines the neutral point to be, that's where it is. Much like calibrating a joystick back in the old days.

Intuitively disturbing, yes, but when you understand the type of steering it is, it's not quite so disturbing. I can see how it isn't a dire safety issue. Not that I'd want to deal with it.

You have a good point. When mine was like that it did not "feel" as unsafe as it looked, becasue as you said, it was basically just a new "center". Disconcerting yes! But lord knows I have driven off center cars before.

To give credit where credit is due, the car does now drive like "the poor man's BMW" that it is supposed to be :) One reason I bought the car was because I liked the way it drove, of which steering feel is a big part.

  12. Got the Edge back new wheel and all, had to immediately take it for a reprogram to get rid of new errors regarding hill start and forward crash assist. Now the remote start doesn't work. Headed back in on Monday.

    This is really getting old.

Dude, that sucks! I am sorry to hear that. This really is an insidious issue and I think Ford at minimum owes us a perfect fix and a few damn car payments. Maybe even a buy back offer.

  13.

Finally (crossing fingers) my saga is over. Clock spring and new steering wheel for me. It was in the shop this last time for 13 days and got it back on Tuesday. No new error msgs yet! The messages came and went many times, but this last time when I brought it in my steering wheel had not been straight. Gave me a 17 Fusion loaner car. It was nice, but super pumped to get my sport back!

    This was steering driving straight!

Yeah, I had same thing, freaky and not in a good way :) I guess I thought that if the steering wheel got replaced, the Clock Spring was a part of that, but from what you say, they are two separate things. Hmmm. My car is driving like it should and I enjoy it, but the fact that my steering wheel did not get replaced as well leaves me...

  14. Give the seats a chance with your butt. At 9300 miles, my seats have broken in nicely and fit my butt like a glove. I have found that Ford sport buckets tend to need at least 5000 miles of seat time to really get comfortable.

I am at 6000 and have not used the seats without a thick cushion because it is too painful. Therefore, I have not been able to properly avail myself of the heated seat feature, and the cooling, well, that simply does not work. But I knew that from this forum going in.

Although there are many issues with these seats, the deal killer is that where my thigh crosses the seat cushion bolster, there is not enough padding and a metal bar is what my leg is resting on. This is also the precise part of leg that has no padding of its own. Pure bone, all the time. Bottom line, these seats were poorly designed and even more poorly implemented. Very sad. Did Ford learn nothing while they owned Volvo?

So like a pebble in a shoe will not "break in" until it is removed, that is what we have here. The cloth seats in my $19,000 loaner were more comfortable than the top of the line leather "perforated heated and cooled seats" in my $45,000 Edge. That sucks, believe me.

Now that I feel my car is safe to drive I will be finding out what exactly my options are. First stop, local car seat upholstery company.

  15. OK, I got my car back. They replaced and reset some modules. replaced the Clock Spring. And did a bunch of other stuff I do not understand but is on the service order. I am very happy to say all error messages are gone. Heated steering wheel works again, yay. And a bluetooth issue seems to have disappeared (a good thing) and all seems very good. So it is running "better than new" at this point.

If anyone cares, I could post a jpg of the service order tomorrow. Let me know.

For now, I am quite happy. As I can now focus on the other BIG but not necessarily safety related issue. The unbelievably uncomfortable front seats. I still may have to trade the car and take a hit as this precludes me using the heated seats and using the seats at all without a cushion. Lincoln MX maybe?

  16. Did you have your hands on the wheel when it turned? I haven't heard anyone say they lost control of the vehicle. Ford is usually pretty quick to recall something if it is truly a safety issue.

It was a while back when this happened, so I am cloudly on the precise circumstances. As I recall I had tried turning off the car and on again to reset the error message and right then the wheel turned 90 degrees to the left. The wheels themselves did not turn, the wheel turned. The car was actually drivable but with the wheel 90 degrees off center. I am an expert driver so I was able to get into town. Stopped for gas on the way, and after restarting after fill up, the wheel magically re-centered itself.

In a new set of events, the wheel was 10-15 degrees off center and had been for a week when I took it to dealer today.

I will be picking the car up tomorrow. I will give a full report tomorrow night.

  17.

Isn't the car still driveable? If so then it's not a safety issue thus no recall. Besides - how would a recall help the situation?

I guess that depends on what you mean by drivable. Since it is the STEERING that is affected, it seems to me it would qualify as a safety issue. A recall would raise awareness generally and also possibly SAVE a life before anyone actually died or was injured from it. Believe me me, when your steering wheel turns itself 90 degrees to the left (like it did once for me, luckily I was going slow almost in my driveway) trust me, that sure does SEEM like a safety issue for sure.

Also, since it is happening to so many vehicles, it seems that would be a good way for Ford to get out in front of this.

  18. The stars must have been aligned correctly. I did get a loaner. They are putting in a clock spring and another part I did not get the name. I am hoping to hear from them tomorrow.

I need to do some driving on Thursday, so I really hope it is fixed and fixed right. This really colors my whole experience with my first American car. I also wonder why a recall has not been issued? Or did I miss that?

  19. Well my warning on the dash never goes off-- so it's sure not enjoyable to be in. And why should I assume it's safe? It's a steering error!! I think nobody could guarantee it wouldn't go awry and be a hazard.

I totally agree! Never ever have I been sold a car that had steering issues. It goes in tomorrow and I will see what they say/do. I still cannot believe that they are not falling all over themselves to give me a loaner. I mean this is not "I am not really happy with the color of the dashboard" kind of issue. This is serious.

The last time I was in when they just did the hookup test they said something like... "We could not possibly give you a loaner because blah blah blah." It is not easy to hold my temper in the light of such ignorance. What, would the universe break if they gave me a loaner?

  20. ETA on new steering wheel is January 31. I will be expecting more answers on if this is a truly new version of the wheel assembly or just the same thing that could fail. My dealer still has my car and is having no luck finding another wheel assembly in the meantime. So far they argue it's unsafe to drive.

Jan 31 would be well over the 30 days for a lemon law filing if it indeed takes that long.

I am praying for the Lemon Law for us both. Ford should know better than this crap and owes us something more than just a fix for being beta testers for a feature no one really cared about to begin with.
