  1. Hesitate to start new, but I've been thru treads in this section & my questions about wheels for Edge aren't addressed. Did a +1 back in ’85 & dealer who wouldn’t sell something unless it was pretty much spot on has retired. A lot can happen in 24 years & I may be a little outa’ the loop. When looking for new wheels & tires, what are spec limits? For instance, my Edge uses wheel with 40mm offset. I’m looking at wheel with 38mm, which means it “sticks out” (boy that sounds technical) an extra 2 mm. Edge wheel is 7.5” wide. So an 8” wheel will add another ¼’ (6.35mm) to the 2mm for a total of 8.35mm or about 5/16”. Any problem with my math? Problems with that amount of “stick-out?” I see no rubbing or bearing load of consequence & I do have mud flaps. What say the members? Wheel this be OK? If I go to tire/wheel dealer website & plug in ’07 Edge, AWD, 18” (have 17s now) can I trust that site will return only wheels for my car? Other seasoned geezers & I are of an age & from a time when we "didn't need no stinking" TPMS. Heck, we still have & use tire gages. I’ve been checking tire air for twice as long as some of U'all been breathing air. :yup: What happens if I buy new set wheels & tires, but choose not to spring for TMPS bands, cradles, transmitters, etc? (After all, I am on a fixed income.) :shades: Will I be pestered with all sorts of bells, buzzers, whistles & warnings from the air Nazi? Seems I read somewhere dealer can shut off TPMS, but that doesn’t seem correct since we’re dealing with a NHTSA :stop: safety feature.. Darned emoticons, they're like peanuts, U can't eat just one. :hysterical2: See, what did I just say?
  2. U' know, it's a carry over from days when dashboards were covered with vinyl & windshields didn't offer UV protection. So if U didn't want U'r dash to crack, U used ArmorAll. U can imagine this made a dash with almost no shine really glare. So, enter the dash cover. Little glare & some heat & UV protection. Even now, they keep ole Sol from playing broiler to U'r dash. With apparently fragile painted surface of Edge dash, I'd say this is reason enuf. So we liked the benefits, got used to them & some keep using them. A little history :boring: lesson - when we seniors (aka old farts) were young, all dash boards were painted steel. Then (late '50s) for safety, dashes were padded & covered w/vinyl. Wheels were 16-17" :yup: dia & designers fell all over themselves to make them smaller. "Hey cat, peep out those boss low profile 14 inchers!" And the only "custom" wheels were genuine magnesium (hence the term "mag") racing wheels which were almost unobtainium. If U worked at gas station for $1.00/hour, even if U could find a set, U probably couldn't afford them. About best U could hope for was hubcaps from another make car, with spinners (Olds, Buick) most desirable. NOW, what do we want? 19-22-26" wheels & tires that cost more than my first new car in '62. PS: I expect bbf2530 to chime in here sometime because after his quite astute replies, I'm guessing he's approaching "old fart" status. :beerchug:
  3. Has anyone bought the DashMat brand dash cover for his/her Edge? If so, how is the fit?
  4. FWIW, we use TomTom & '07 Edge nav (I did not order $2100 nav/radio combo) - $300 for 9 spkr radio leaves $1800 for lots of Garmins, Magellans, TomToms. Reason we have on-board nav, BAMR & AWD involves long story of order (in Pewter) that never made it to dealer. Bought TomTom in anticipation of new car. Decided if we ordered another, it would be that fiery orange :extinguish: :yup: color. That being said, we use both navs & find a few, mostly minor, differences. I don't know as I'd recommend extra portable unit unless U want to use in another car. For foreseeable future, we humans are still "smarter" than machines, so ignore U'r nav's directions if U know a better way. It'll instantly recalculate & catch up with U. COSTCO sells TomTom on-line & has other brands in store. Last I checked on-line prices comparable to eBay, especially when on sale. PS: A piece of 1/4" plate glass cut to size & shape & placed conveniently works better than windshield for mounting. Less heat, glare & distance to reach. Also no tattle-tale ring. Park a ball cap on U'r headrest so when U leave car U can use hat to hide :shades: GPS & charging cord. PS: We didn't order new car. Bought last '07 on lot for $7000 off sticker. As luck would have it, it's Blazing Copper. U know that fiery orange :extinguish: :yup: color.
  5. U'r very close to correct. The two pins are shaped like a + sign if looked at straight on & during assembly they push aside plastic tabs/flanges, much as U describe. I would characterize the "locking" action as like a Chinese finger puzzle. As stated, the Ford badge is further held in place with an oval piece of two sided "tape." The tail gate molding consists of two parts: (1) the black plastic piece that holds license lamps & lift gate "unlock" switch & (2) the "paint-to-match" piece that holds the Ford badge. These two are held together with a series of tabs & notches around the periphery. Six 2-ended studs screw thru black piece & into painted piece. Threads put me in mind of course wood screw. On other end is machine thread for nuts mentioned by Edge184 in post#7. If U really want to remove badge, U have to dissemble black & painted parts. Then (all at same time) pull 4 tabs away from 2 pins & carefully pry badge to separate it from tape or maybe tape from molding. I'm too embarrassed  to tell how I came to have such intimate knowledge of this area. Suffice to say it was an act of extreme carelessness. However, I was more lucky than anyone could hope for in such a situation & it cost very little to put right.
  6. DJ, but what about joy :happy feet: U'r kid gets from Popsicle U buy so U can have the stick? Lex, what about those whose knuckles don't drag on the ground? U know, the ones who are extremity challenged. :hysterical2: PS: Can U believe we've got 12 posts about a GPS (Generic Popsicle Stick?)?
  7. Quick & dirty, cheap, simple & unsatisfactory solution - keep U'r mirror joy-stick turned to right side & pull it back when U want to see curb (or?) on right.
  8. I knew there was at least one other person out there with a sense of humor! Could it be because U & I both have that fiery citrus color? :extinguish: :yup:
  9. Don't knock it 'til U've try it. Oh, I get it, it's the Popsicle stick. Maybe a bamboo chopstick. How about a shish kebab skewer? Nah, U'd have to use a number drill for "tether" hole.
  10. Tired of finger marks on U’r nav display? Here’s a simple solution. Make U'r own stylus. Get a Popsicle stick :do what: or wooden coffee stirrer & sand one end smooth enuf to satisfy U’rself. Drill small hole in other end for string, yarn or ribbon. Use bright color so it’s easy to find when U drop it on floor. :yup: Price is right & as added bonus it’ll extend U’r reach. If U'r lucky U might find color matched string, yarn or ribbon like I did. U know that fiery orange :extinguish: :yup: color.
  11. Orian, please :read: post #94, pg 5, this thread. At risk of sounding like a wimp , I'm concerned about location of U'r resistors. Turn on hazard flashers for about 5 mins (that's easily within realm of possible use & equivalent to about 2 1/2 mins. w/foot on brake) & feel U'r resistors. Pretty hot eh?! Imagine sitting in rush hour traffic w/foot on brake for long periods in summer w/sun @ U'r back & beating down on taillights. Before U sign off on this job, I'd at least do this quick, simple test.
  12. Seems somewhere in my meanderings, I read that MKX has moon roof feature that backs it up if it bumps something like U'r kid's neck who's showing off to his buddies by yelling out the moon roof. I'll check MKX OM. I've got a link to OMs somewhere. Why here it is now! :speedie: It was over in one of my other posts. https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owne...als/default.asp U can check too, if'n U want. False alarm, it's the MKZ has "bounce back" feature.
  13. Ah, we who are blessed w/OCD relish the small stuff & revel in minutia. The devil's  in the details!
  14. Orion, don't be too hard on U'rself, I (& I imagine others) also "lost" a park/turn bulb as U describe. To go U one better, I "lost" a rear side marker bulb. As luck would have it, taillight unit is piece of cake to remove & shake, rattle & roll to every conceivable position ('til U find just the right combination of moves.) I didn't know I had that much patience. As to the right pointing license lamp (as Ford calls it - can we call it a bulb holder?), there appears to be no reason (all disclaimers are in effect 'cause "I haven't performed this operation Dr."**) why can't U file a notch on left side of passenger side opening to mirror driver side & accommodate the little lamp "spring latch" (one of which I broke [36K B to B covered it] 'cause they were such a tight fit. Couldn't have been my  technique! Some filing on notch & latch freed things up on new one.) I would make U'r new notch no longer than width (long side of) "spring latch." As a margin of safety this keeps new notch shorter (long side.) because U'll notice there's a clear tab that keeps bulb holder in place & it appears to be same length as original notch, but wider so it should extend past width (short side) of orig. notch & serve its function when bulb holder is turned 180 degrees. As alternative to new notch, a person could use different style of bulb. I'm guessing U guys are using forward facing LEDs. The ones I have (eBay seller EnKMall - $5.98/pr or $11.98 for 5 w/no shipping charge & they arrive in 6-8 days, but it's too soon to attest to quality  ) have 4 side facing (90 degress apart) & one forward facing LED so they sorta mimic the light dispersion(?) of the standard C5W which is a little brighter than a 194. Now, on my F-150 their design gives off a "lopsided" light w/one angled down & the other angled up, similar to pic in post #111. I'm waiting on a pair of forward facing 6-LED #194s from EnKMall, as we speak (I type?), that should do the trick.* They are not as bright as they appear here, and yes it seems there is a little right bias to the light, but I think it's no worse than w/incandescents. I think it's one of those things U don't notice until it's brought to U'r attention. Then it can drive U nuts. Hey Lex - No need for Ford to make right & left license lamps. They just need to put notch on correct (left) side of passenger side opening. What should we expect? In 2nd printing of '09 OM, some bulbs listed are still incorrect. *4-08-09 - Turns out they didn't do the trick; F-150 bulb points more toward rear than plate & I missed it when I looked! So...., as of now, solution is to not fully twist into place. Bulbs didn't go to waste though; put them in F-150 dome/map lights & bulbs (#906/921) that were to go there I put in cargo (bed) lights. The 921 (9-LED) bulb is specified for Edge back-up lamp, however these I have are forward firing, but need LEDs around sides to utilize reflector. ** 10-23-09 – I have performed this operation & it works. Below are 5-LED bulb for “stock situation” & forward facing 6-LED bulb for use after modification.
  15. Well whudiyuno , only took 2/5 hour :yup: for someone to violate sanctity of closing of this thread <_<. Listen - do I hear an echo from post #11? No harm done. Now everyone :party2: knows all they never wanted to about Edge/MKX tranny op. PS: Just a friendly :poke: @ BlazedUp. He shud be in my corner; after all, my '07 is that fiery orange :extinguish: :yup: color like his. Halloween has become our favorite holiday. :hysterical2:
  16. This thread is now Officially Closed.:stop: Less important matters of the Universe can be discussed (& maybe solved as bbf :beerchug: & I have done) elsewhere.
  17. Well said my friend, :D and U know what? When it's all said & done I'm tickled s.i.less :yup: with the way my car goes down hill. PS: Seat belt is snug, tray is away & I'm ready to (gently) smack the tarmac! :hysterical2:
  18. I follow what U say & agree as long as the operation U describe occurs using "Grade Assist" feature while OD is locked out. I've pulled up PDF of '09 Edge OM & rear/reread sections describing "Trans Oper" & "Speed Control." If I've missed something, can U point me to it? Maybe I'm just a little (take U'r pick). I suffer from (or am blessed with) OCD so maybe I'm being nitpicky. PS: Are we approaching the stage where we're :beatdeadhorse: ?
  19. Was going over posts again & it occurs to me we still haven't resolved issue of trans shifting down on its own while descending a hill in "cruise." This doesn't involve "Grade Assist" because OD is not locked out.
  20. Dude, U stole my thunder. <_< While I’m reading Waldo’s post #6, Googling “MKS Owners Manual” and coming up with a link to a post in Lincoln MKS Club & Forum that says “Anyone can get a PDF version of any Ford owner's guide 1996-2009, including the MKS, from Ford's Fleet website. You don't need an account.” and then going to that site and reading about Lincoln MKS trans operation, U’r posting the above. So good news all around. It turns out that though I may be old(er) I’m not delusional , my ’07 manual says nothing about this (the trans, not my state of mind), U’r ’08 manual is more descriptive than ’07, but less than ’09 and ’09 manual makes a clean breast of the whole thing. In addition to all this, we now have a site to go to for all of our Ford OM needs. :banvictory: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owne...als/default.asp or http://genuineservice.com/genuineservice/e...CFRBbagodswmmFA
  21. bbf, U'r info is sound and U'r explanation is clear. I know some of the spendy cars that we hoi polloi lust after actually have adaptive cruise control (notice that in post #3 I put it in quotes,) but if that term has not been copyrighted, patented or other wise lawyered up, I say let us be adept, and adopt and adapt it to our purposes. Why should the moneyed crowd :shades: have all the fun and trick auto “stuff”? It’s time we peons participate. PS: Some might think U & I have too much time on our hands. PSS: Awaiting results of U'r brake tap into 4th gear experiment.
  22. Hey bbf, thanks for the lesson. We’re never too old to learn. (I’ve been driving since 1957 :yup: ) I looked in OM :read: again at trans operation, pgs 216-220 “Automatic Transmission Operation” & pgs 90-93 “Speed Control” (OM, 2nd printing, Oct 2006) & this is what I find: pg 219- D (Drive) without Overdrive (point 2) – “Provides engine braking.” Says nothing about its flexibility – press button, down to 5th, tap brake, drops to 4th. pgs 90-91 – under Setting speed control – Note: “If vehicle speed increases above the set speed on a downhill, you may want to apply brakes to reduce speed.” Says nothing about trans shifting down (on its own) to try to maintain set speed. Could it be that later printing (there are at least 3) of OM has more detail about trans operation? This is 5th Ford I’ve owned w/OD lockout: ’98 F-150, ’98 Taurus, ’05 F-150, ’05 Taurus (no, they didn’t come as sets ) so I’m acquainted w/OD & lockout button. None of the five have had “adaptive cruise control.” U heard it (this new term) here first. If, as U say, all newer transmissions operate in this manner, U’r absolutely correct that it wouldn’t be advertised. I made my comments based on my never having experienced a trans that worked this way. I do not consider U to be a wise guy. I asked for information & U came forth. For that I thank U and I hope U’r not the last to respond. PS: If U'r ever in SF Bay area, I'd be glad to :beerchug: stand U a pint!
  23. I’d like verification about how Edge transmission works. It’s so useful that it’s almost hard to believe Ford (or most others) would engineer this: 1. On a downgrade when I push button to lock out overdrive, the trans drops into 5th gear & stays there until I tap brake, whereupon it drops into 4th. Very handy ‘cause it gives small amount of engine braking initially and more if I want/need it. 2. While using cruise control & I start down a long, somewhat steep, hill, as I gain speed (& I haven’t noticed precisely how much), before too long trans shifts down (to 4th gear) & I have engine braking to try to keep my set speed. True cruise control in that it attempts to maintain the speed I’ve set whether on the flat or up or down hill. I haven’t read anything, anywhere about this. You’d think Ford would tout these as safety/convenience features. Man, I hope nobody posts, “Dude, U’r gear box is totally !!” What say U, ladies & gents? Is my car on par or have I got a warranty problem? Tell U what, if it’s a defect, I’ll keep it to myself until it causes trouble.^_^ But I'd still like to know what U'all are experiencing.
