New Crossover from Dodge, Edge still has...the Edge

Recommended Posts

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Bloggers and spy photographers had it pegged early on as the Dodge Crew or the Dodge NCC. But the newest midsize crossover from the New Chrysler has been christened the Dodge Journey — perhaps a more appropriate handle, considering the automaker's checkered odyssey and its recent transformation into a privately held company.

The Journey — the name was used previously on gigantic Dodge motor homes in the '70s and '80s — will make its public debut in two weeks at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. It is expected to go on sale in early 2008 in North America and Europe and will be assembled at Chrysler's plant in Toluca, Mexico.

The four-door crossover looks pretty much like a tall box on wheels; it can be configured to seat five or seven passengers. Both front- and all-wheel-drive variants will be offered, along with a choice of powertrains.

The base engine for the U.S. market will be the familiar DOHC 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit that makes 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can step up to a twincam 2.7-liter V6 that delivers 186 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come standard with a four-speed automatic transmission.

The top engine for North America is an SOHC 3.5-liter V6, rated at 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque, and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

For markets outside North America, Chrysler will offer a turbocharged 2.0-liter common-rail diesel that makes 138 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices in overseas markets include an Aisin six-speed manual and a Getrag six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Standard equipment on all models includes four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction and stability control, and electronic roll mitigation.

What this means to you: It's pretty homely, but the new Dodge Journey will feature up-to-the-minute technical features — especially in European spec.- source Edmunds.com insideline
