Sharp Edge Posted September 2, 2010 Report Share Posted September 2, 2010 Greetings, I have a 2007 Ford Edge with 111,000 Km's (68,000 miles) on it. Driving home from work 3 days ago, it wouldn't shift up from 1st gear, or downshift either. It also would slip, not finding the next gear. (It reminded me of a torque converter problem I had years ago in an older vehicle). I got it in to the local Ford Dealership for service, they looked at it the following day. They called and told me that it was 'the worst case senario' and the transmission had failed. They said the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear clutches where gone. I was given the price to replace. The transmission cost $4,500 from Ford, and 11 hours of labour. The total (after tax, misc parts, etc.) would be $6,400. Or: Rebuild it, parts and 33 hours labour for about $5,200. -------but the transmission would only have 1 year warranty. They can't find a used transmission for it. (here in Canada anyway I guess) Unfortunately, this is a lease vehicle,to be returned early next year, with expired powertrain warranty. (60,000 miles) This is a vehicle that has never missed service, and has been well taken care of. The miles are highway miles. I did have some of the other problems (posted by others) , from time to time, such as the "clunk" in the transmission when turning a corner, etc. (TSB's) I just want to share this.....because the transmission is a fairly new design, and somewhat unproven, an extended warranty may be a good idea............. (& links) Ford asked for permission to tear it down to actually see inside the case, thankfully I said I needed to review my options first. (It's hard to select another shop when the transmission is apart on their floor !) After I get results, I'll post the final outcome here. This trans was developed in 2004 by Ford and GM. GM, Ford and Chrysler all use this trans in various vehicles and given that 3 different mfgs are using a version of it it probably is a reasonably sound unit. I think most of the issues are going to be a direct result of programming as each mfg is obviously going to tune it for different applications.
