  1. I got a nibble! When I'm wrong I admit it. In this case both of us are not wrong... but only half right! Temp, air/fuel mix and pressure can change compression. Then we have spark advance or retard, controlled by the OBC nowadays, can change compression and even adjust to prevent knock. A spark or high pressure is needed for combustion so when this spark happens, before or after TDC, will also determine the compression. Then there is also the cam and rod length which determines the stroke, pressure and also the compression. It can change as the engine gets older due to wear. Every engine, even the exact same design, will have different compression. Yes the compression ratio cant be change by software but compression and compression ratio are not the same thing. The ratio is calculated from measurements that vary on each engine of same type and design that "should " be the same. Its theoretical. Only in a perfect world would it be the same for every one that comes off the line. The actual compression is the measured real world value and even changes with barometric pressure. The VCR engine by SAAB is the one I recall but VCR was developed way before that. Dunno who, when or why. For octane burn I was half wrong and again so are you. High octane has the SAME or sometimes MORE energy than lower octane fuel. Detonation resistance is what the octane measurement determines. High octane DOES burn slower but burns more efficiently. The fast burn of lower octane may burn out before the piston completes the stoke and power loss is the result. Also prevents knock as you described very well. Octane matters most under heavy load. If you notice tach bounce or erratic movements while idling, knock, hesitation or similar try a higher octane fuel. It should run very smooth and constant with no sputter. Saying I know nothing is kinda...well...just rude! No worries though. How about... we both know a little, don't design engines for a living and still have much to learn. I know enough to rebuild one. Having no parts left over, turning over and starting...well....thats another story. The only true way to fail is to stop trying!
  2. What sold me on the Edge was the safety rating from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Found here The Arcadia that I drove for a week is nice. The manual auto was very nice. A lil bigger and underpowered. Constant gear searching in D. The 08's or next year sometime will have have more power/engine options so I'm told. Nice car but not $10k nicer than the edge. Dodge's Look nice but don't last. Your's may have been a "good" one. Traded a 99 Durango w/ 70k and many issues for Edge in June. Traded a 97 Cummings truck w/ 60k and an attitude in April also. Done with 'em. Service sucks! "I don't know whats wrong" was there answer to my truck not starting half the time and taking 20 mins to get running... if at all? Same bs on durango sticking in 4th gear at 80 mph and engine dieing at lights. A trucker stop to help once and said they nicknamed the Cummings.... "comapart". Now I understand why! Been bought out by Cerberus, a private firm, that now owns 80% of Chrysler IIRC. Known for buying troubled companies and liquidating. Chrysler being $20mil in debt isn't good either. Nardelli's the new CEO AKA "the poster child of poor workforce relations". Cant get much worse can it? Give 'em 5 years to see if they make it. Ford or Chevy for US "designed" and assembled in Mexico or Canada. Toyota is the best made, the only auto maker in the green and assembled in USA. How that happened baffles me. American, japan, Europe doesn't matter. All built from parts made in taiwan. Well...atleast we still make the frame and axles! Sorry, needed to vent. Get an edge! 0% financing may help you decided. If still available.
  3. Rotate and balance tires? Does it pull right in parking lot with slight left slope and driving slow? I would take it to a shop that does alignments on tow trucks, lifted trucks and other big trucks just to see what they say. I other words... take to a redneck! Then send ford the bill.
  4. No problems here. Its just big inside and has few vents. Roll windows down for few miles as someone suggested to get the air thats 40-50f hotter than outside air out. Close the sunshade when parked. AC @ 32F seems low. What the tolerance of that IR temp gun? Not that it matters... Those with problems get a gauge and check charge of A/C. R-134A should be 1.21 lbs. on low side. Same wind noise with Arcadia, Explorer and Yukon. Very bad on Arcadia, hurts your ears! Yukon is tolerable. Sure don't make 'em like they used too...when they used metal. A wreck with a US made auto from the 60-70's will cut threw new autos like tin foil.
  5. 16.5 mpg in 800 miles of small city driving max 55 mph. I expected more mpg but much better than POS v8 durango it replaced. Someone may find this useful to confirm mpg. Much more on this site too. More links at bottom...take a gander. gas mileage calculator(US)
  6. Rented an arcadia for trip to FL in June. Searched for gears constantly and was annoying. By weeks end I always used the manual. Like the Edge better but I to wish it has the manual auto trans. In VA mountains the Edge did fine in D. Retrofit? SE not have fog lights? Fogs with wireless remote are very easy to install.
  7. He's full of it! Call the mfgr of the intake or chip to get the truth.
  8. Thats your fault. Thats why I own stock in Exxon and Chevron that pay me dividends which equals more than I pay a year for gas. Comes back to me every quarter. They just borrow it for a while. True the Edge and most engines are designed for 87 octane gas. Only engines with compression over 10 need higher octane. BTW, chip, reprogramming the OBC, etc. changes compression ratios. Higher octane simply makes the gas burn faster and hotter and push the piston down with more "umph". More mpg with high octane too. Pull an injector out... you'll see the gunk. YAY MKX!! Correct! It cleans the injectors and whole fuel system. My whole point! I'll post some picks of JD gas movers fuel filters that use Texaco pump gas to show ya'll what they look like after 1 year if anyone want to see. I used to think the same thing. Think about it. Gas turns to water how? Needs air right? So mostly air and little gas in a vented tank what happens? To Minimize water, keep it full! Fuel pumps are lubricated and cooled by the gas. Why chance it? Fuel injected engines don't like running out of gas. Bad for 'em. Dunno about the fiber tanks. Maybe new stations have em but they're still transported in same trucks and rail cars. What are the tell tell signs of bad gas? Whats the symptoms? Anyone?
  9. Is this under normal or full acceleration? Notice any red oil spots under car? First thing is check the trans fluid level. Don't rely on someone else. Look in manual or I'll tell you how if needed. Its easy. Saying it "only seems to happen in hot weather" makes me think its could be overfilled. If no underlying issues anyway. We'll see... The slipping you feel is from torque converter or diffs. Trannys typically don't "slip" but jurk and/or make a gears grinding sound if theres a problem. The shift delay and a slight increase in rpm betwwen gears is normal and controlled by the OBC, springs in the tranny. Common in new cars. Gives it a smooth ride. Not head jurking. Shift points are controlled by the OBC also. A handheld programmer will change both of these values but not eliminate the delay. Dunno if ones available for the Edge yet. Just drove wifes edge and at 45 mph tach reads 1100 rpm.
  10. ^agreed! Usually no rca outs on factory heads. Call crutchfield and ask if they have a harness. They're usually very helpful with all questions including removal of head unit. Just to be clear, only speakers you want to add is subs? I'm surprised nobody has wanted to add tweets up high on doors panels. Would make a huge difference in front stage. Just a thought... sell head unit to someone here and get new head? Thats what I would have done... in my younger days.
  11. Many universal fit kick plates out there. Go to local parts store and see if they fit. May be cheaper.
  12. Polarized lenses were developed by fisherman for fisherman in late 80's IIRC. Allowing them to see the fish underwater better mainly. Reduces glare also as some have pointed out. You WILL see some things that you didn't before but I've yet to see any pink flying wal-mart elephants. Let you know if I do.
  13. http://www.bbb.org/ or ford directly but both are in vain for small claims unless in high numbers. Its sad... but have to get a bunch of people and lawyers involved for anyone to listen. Get your money back is my best advice. Try returning it to dealer cause not satisfied? If paid for with a credit card you should be able to get your money back even if dealer wont refund the money. If so, call CC company to find out. Its in the fine print nobody ever reads. Debt cards are not the same as a real CC and have no protection. I agree it should be standard equipment. Laughed when dealer showed me one. Aftermarket will most likely have other cheaper options before long. Is it $250 from ford online also? Was gonna build something out of wood or aluminum myself but wife told me not to bother. Be much cheaper. May do it anyway. GL!
  14. The dual zone CC is a nice option to have as a whole. Wife didn't even know the Edge had outside temp until yesterday so your not alone Bannachipz. Have it on 2 auto's but don't use it. Anyone find outside temp useful feature for auto's or am I the exception?
  15. NEVER tow anything heavy with OD turned on is what I've always been told. Its easier on the drivetrain components and keeps trany cooler. Should confirm this in the owners manual but I didn't see anything. Maybe the Edge is different but ask the dealer to be sure its ok to use OD(or not) for the load and won't void drivetrain warranty if used. Manual DOES say to replace rear diff fluid with a synthetic gear oil and drive it easy. After looking at the rear end just now, its a lil bity even compared to my lawn mover and I strongly suggest both. No full throttle, put in park when stopped in traffic, service more often, never over 70 mph when towing, tire pressure adjustment, A/C may turn itself off and more in manual. No more than the Edge weights, I highly recommend trailer brakes(electric is best) and a cushioned hitch receiver(easier on vehicle) for any substantial load like 2800 lbs. If the rear of any tow vehicles sinks much a load leveling hitch will help distribute the weight and give a better ride. Use lock tight and lock washer on the ball. Coat occasionally with penetrating oil to fight rust. Just a thought...what about mounting a bike rack on the trailer tongue? The tongue weight is just as important as trailer weight. 350 lbs max for class 2 Edge. I once watched a cattle trailer get smaller in the mirror after the hitch bolts on the frame broke after a bump in the road. Weld 'em on ever since that day. Found out why my 95 F150 manual said Turn OD off when towing while rebuilding its E40D. Found the OD gear worn, missing teeth and made of plastic. ACK! Now has a shift kit and ALL steel gears! 20 years of towing under my belt... take it as you will... and be safe!!
  16. Looked on there website. Didn't see it. Have a link? Price? More HP your main goal? If its an new intake/filter you're looking for, look for a true cool air intake. Cold air burns hotter/faster. Many kits just suck hot air from the engine compartment. Haven't looked on the Edge but most stock mass air flow sensors are between the filter and throttle body and some kits don't allow there use without modification. Check before you buy to avoid any headaches. Last one I purchased was made by Volant but they only make products for trucks IIRC.
  17. 6-700 rpm for v8's. v6's should be same or very close. 550 is close enough. I set my ford low as it will idle smooth. Does the tach bounce any? Engine sputter or sound like its gonna quit running? Both ac and def turns the compressor on and will cause it to idle a bit lower from more load but still be a smooth idle. Computer may compensate but a 50 rpm drop with ac on or stopped in D(or both) is normal. Slight bouncing on a cold start is typical but should only last 1 min or less. Start it cold and listen from outside near pipes with air off for 30 secs. Then listen with ac maxed for another 30s. Is the sound from TP's smooth and constant? Do the same with tranny in D? In any case it should just be a simple data adjustment on the OBC. Newer cars my have settings for when the ac is on. I dunno. Bad gas can cause rough idle. Try to use gas stations with new tanks and sale high amounts of gas like the ones just off interstate ramps. Less chance of water in the gas. Put premium gas in every 5th tank. It has detergents to clean the injectors and remove any water. Check the gauges for normality. Don't sweet it... its under warranty! If it runs... drive it till it don't, screams bloody murder or a light comes on. All the electronics just makes it harder to fix if you ask me. Code readers work but you need an explanation of the explanation. Might as well be Chinese. Almost ready to strip the f150 and put a carb on top. Much easier to trouble shoot and tweak. But I like to tinker... and fix it till its worse. LOL!
  18. Aye! BT device and FM transmitter w/ new i-pod less than $350 and portable. More for less! Just lacks the voice but pushing a button my lazy arse can even handle. Most cells have voice built in so Sync's only addition would be voice for mp3's. Unless I missed something. I burnt mine to one dvd. 4.4GB is enough for me. I didn't mean to imply the nav wont get you there. Just that it may not be the best route.
  19. GAH! OK! Watch videos. Pause and look at timer. Links to Timeslips. No explanation needed...I hope. Stock 07 Escalade timeslip 07 Denali timeslip Edge acceleration(looks like 20-60 in about 6 secs...20-100 in 16s. Agree?) Edge timeslip 1 AWD SEL PLUS timeslip MKX timeslip Nonstock 04 denali magna charged Off topic and NOT recommended!!! edge 0-130? Blue smoke towing power. Mine had power...when and if it would start. Done with 'em. Weight doesn't matter with enough room under the hood and places to hide a big bottle or two. Beware! Trucks may look stock...but rarely are. Ive lost to more trucks than cars at the strip and paid $ to learn it. :yup: 740 HP...10.41 1/4 mile! OUCH! Pony didn't expect that I bet. As you saw, diesel ft-lbs are king off the line. Have to catch up to them. Never do less than 1/4m against the D's! Black smoke is a warning Don't mess. Trick me once... shame on you! Trick me twice... shame on me!!
  20. Larger rims give a slightly rougher ride. The air in a tire and sidewall hight is you cushion to absorb bumps. Taller sidewall gives more dampining. Shorter sidewall tires roll less and corner better. Take a look at the tires made for the size rim before you choose. 18" tires that fit the edge are limited IIRC. 07 MKX.. DO NOT READ BELOW!! MAY LEARN SOMETHING!!! The truth is...are all round and will roll from A to B... so the question is...how much money you want to throw away? Its only for show, bling, whatever. I like em. Makes a ride really stand out... but a fad... nothing more. Created by pro athletes, music artists, actors and everyone else with more money than they know what to do with and/or don't think about the future. Example: MC Hammer. He had more than most make in a life time but now he's poo, not poor, poo. Lost everything cause he olny though of today and not tomorrow. happens to big lottery winners often. If I did choose to get some though, it would be after market over what Ford has to offer. They're made stronger, made from higher quality materials and will make your ride different from all the other Edge/MKX's on the road. My advice...go stock and save the dough. IMO... HP>rim size and looks... but thats me. To each his own. Just don't have rims worth more than the car like some foo's. You've seen 'em B4...Fo sho. EVEN MORE BORING and OFF TOPIC!!! Retirement cost is very expensive and rising!! "In any event, $300 a month saved for 540 months at 7% gives a future value of $1,137,000. If you wait until you are 30 to start saving, that $300 is only worth $540,000 when you are 65! Not Saving $36,000 in Your Twenties Costs You $597,000 When You Are 65! That is nearly $600,000. What could you do with $600,000?"-Retirement Cost Many retirement calculators online to see where you stand. Expert opinions range from 70-100% of current annual income for every year of retirement not including hobbies, travel, fun, etc. In 02, the avg 75 yr old lived off 23K a yr. Thats not for me! Just get started ASAP or you may end up bagging groceries at 70. All questions are welcome for those who care. I'll help if I can. FYI...best investment....REAL ESTATE!!! Always goes up and not making any more of it. Worst investment...a new automobile...always goes down in value and has reoccurring cost. Looses the most value in first year. Now you know! If nobody cares for reading my posts cause they are boring or whatever please speak up. If if was worth my time and you learned something or it helped in some way let me know. Not getting many comments here for some reason... maybe just lack of member population. Lots of lurkers though. It will grow along with Edge ownership! Ever seen a Ford repair kit????????????????????????????????? Its called a hand grenade! (Chevy joke...sorry...older ford owners understand) My 2 cents, Reh
  21. Are you depressed? Need someone to talk to? I'll listen. Whats up? Dude! Chill! Have a brew or sumfin. Smile! Laugh more! You can frown when you're 6 feet under! To answer your well thought out comment...I was explaining my earlier post and sharing some ideas to stay cool with the AZ guy..or anyone for that fact!! Nobody is holding a gun to you head and forcing you to read my post!!! Life is all about choices...make the right ones and leave a good impression is what my parents told me growing up. Sorry to have a personality..geez! Yes... I speak my mind and I BS a little. Well...maybe a lot. Whats wrong with that? Atleast I WAS ON TOPIC! BTW, any contest with a $ bet...I'm in! Makes me smile, laugh and life more fun! Lose..win...doesn't matter. Fore instance..I bet your next post contains less than 50 words.
  22. Glare is common on most vehicles with a big windshilde and angled like the Edge. Black absorbs light, thats why it gets so hot. The lighter the color, the more light it reflects. High gloss protectives like armor all makes the dash more reflective and the dash glare worse.
  23. Deciphered? Which part? Sorry to go over your head or bore you. This is a forum..yes? You came to a for expecting to not read? Are one liners a conversation? Have those in real life? I don't. Now thats boring! Maybe reading more will increase your read rate? I dunno! Have I offended you in some way? Sorry if I did! Do I need to include pics? Fonts to small? Double Spacing? Whats the problem? Need help with some other post of mine? Be specific! I gave my 2 cents to bluedart and nobody else has anything useful or opinions to add thus far. I gave AN OPINION!! Links for reference even. Maybe he will find it useful...maybe not. He asked a question and I answer it. Did I not? Is that not why we are here? OK..cliff notes version, Yes they will do it. Will cost $500+. Not worth the money. MS is slow with updates. New MS software always has bugs and could take a year to get them fixed. Better off buying new phone or saving the money. May be cheaper too. FYI...NAV maps are not up to date. That better/simple enough???? Sounds like a kid in a hurry w/ poor grammar. Not than mine is any good to begin with. Appropriate for a txt msg I guess. Once I learned to type fast...I type like I talk. Don't you? Lets see what starter has to say....Bluedart... was my post of any help or use to you? What about mkx or sues post? :backtotopic:
  24. Pay them enough and they will do whatever you want. What about a gps with handfsree built in? LIke this...nuvi 660 DOH...you have nav already. Sorry they overcharged you and many others. It looks good though. Hmmm... Ford Sync. It uses M$ software and thats where I stopped reading. Means it may work and it may not with your device. Better chance with a device running M$ software. PFFT! Hate em!! Lets see...OK.."price to be announced". Typical! Here we go "On models where Sync is optional, it will be priced at $395. On certain lower-series vehicles where enabling equipment – such as steering wheel audio controls -- is not standard, additional equipment may be required at an additional cost."-Ford Press Then add labor, tax, donut break fees, etc. For that price, buy a i-phone or similar and be done with it is my advice. Portable is always good. I'm letting others be i-phone gunny pigs for now. Maybe even a lappy for that price? Or better yet, put the $ in an IRA! You'll need it later in life! Trust me!! GL whatever you decide! Sync will have bugs for atleast a year knowing MS and may never work with all devices. Cool... but overpriced. Took 10k people 5 years to create vista which only gives us DX10 and eye candy that xp could already do. Never did or will fix there last OS...XP. Beware! Ever try calling the tech support? Your lucky if the person speaks good English. Be talking to someone from India. Try it! Ever wonder why MS owns banks? MS got a copy of every email on win 98 pc's! I dont care...but why? Even if you use mac or linux, MS gets some of your money if you pay taxes. Then hackers steal it! Sniff! Sniff! I smell it!!! Do you? OH, and dont trust your nav. Its not that smart. Some roads are not up to date or even still there. Told me to turn right on an outfall line! SO..I did! LOL! Even Drove in the ocean and told me to drive threw the marine base(which they wont let you do) on last trip. Still need a map for backup. Mine may be worse than your's which is a Garmin nuvi 650. Dunno. Just know how to get there from real map or it may take you the long way with many traffic lights and small towns. Anyone seen something similar?
