  1. Mine will be non-Sony MFT as well. Keep in mind that you will need a JL Audio CL441 or comparable unit to restore the bass that is lost when you turn up the volume on the factory head unit. There should be plenty of depth for a pair of 8s in the spare tire well without going the fiberglass route. You should be able to make an mdf box with plenty of airspace to fit back there. There's definitely room for a boxed single 12" in the factory sub location and I may go that route if I cant get a pair of them in the spare tire well. There's room under the rear seats for amps just keep in mind that the seats slide forward a bit when lowered. Be sure to take and post pics when of whatever you install, we wanna see 'em!
  2. A $149 aftermarket head unit and a pair of $69 front speakers and you'll think otherwise lol but glad you like it!
  3. I agree, the grill is TOO much chrome on any color edge but silver or white where it tends to blend in rather nicely. Your blue grill looks nice, and classy. Can't wait to get my black SEL in and black out the grill, chrome door handles etc.
  4. There isn't a 4way speaker on the market that isnt junk and there's no difference in bass reproduction in 2way, 3way, 4way speakers of the same size/manafacturer. 2way coaxial (tweeter permanently mounted to midbass) or 2way component set (seperate tweeter and midbass driver and a crossover network) are the way to go. If you are keeping the factory head unit and staying within a budget then a pair of coaxials for the front and another for the rear are sufficient. You could go with components in the front if you like but dont waste any money on the rears, in fact you would be just fine keeping the factory rears intact and spending the money saved on better front stage speakers. I'm waiting for my 2011 to be delivered in Feb and will be dumping $4k+ in audio gear in it (I'm not a basshead, I'm into SQ and drive all day every day) If you need any more help let me know, I've been out of the loop for a few years but have been doing this for 30 years.
  5. Wow, isn't anyone out there putting aftermarket audio goodies in their Edge? Guess the soccer mom platform doesn't attract many audiophiles eh'
  6. As someone who drives all day every day I have to say that the majority of tinted tail lights are too dark and no doubt most of them have retained their stock bulbs. Seeing their turn signals during the day is impossible and has no doubt been the cause of many accidents before and after dark. Does it look cool on most cars, hell yeah. Should it be condoned without proper warning and proper bulbs? Of course not. The moderator is spot on with his comments and is only thinking about the safety of others.
  7. I'm taking delivery on a 2011 SEL in February and have a few questions for those of you who might have installed some aftermarket audio in your '11 Edges. What is the depth of the rear doors in the factory speaker location? I'm looking to replace the rears with 8" midbass drivers. MDF baffles etc. What is the total area of the spare tire well? WidthxLengthxHeight. I'm hoping to move the spare to the left rear corner (rather than centered) to free up enough space for a pair of downfiring 12"s. From what I've seen in a few pics there should be more than enough room in the factory subwoofer location for amps and processors. The car is coming with MFT so I'll be leaving it in place and using a JL Audio CL441 or comparable unit between the factory head unit and my amps/processors. Have any of you used this or other similar models and what do you like or dislike about them? What is the amp rating on the alternator on the SEL? Thanks in advance!
  8. You have no way of measuring lost mpg due to a heavy foot in a car with stock intake vs aftermarket cai. And I apologize for calling you a kid, your use of the word loose and your undying love for CAI's led me to believe that you were 16 or so.
  9. "When you lay into the throttle you do loose MPG" Hate to break it to ya kid but this is a phenomenon that happens in every car ever made. Except mine, I lose mpg when I lay into the throttle!
  10. LOL @ "lower MPG when you heavy on the gas" lower mpg due to a heavy foot hasn't anything to do with a CAI dude. And CAI's don't use more fuel due to colder air either.
  11. The next time you see an Edge in the grocery store parking lot slide up underneath it and follow the tranny lines and see if there is a small cooler (looks kind of like a heater core) within their path to the radiator.
  12. While an 11.2 Horsepower gain isn't earth shattering, it's also not what you'd call "without any other benefit" Will I spend $299 on an aftermarket intake/filter setup for 11.2hp, LOL of course not. Living in Texas would I ever dream of letting an airfilter go 30,000 miles between changes, an even bigger LOL of course not. Bottom line, folks who bolt on aftermarket mods on their cars don't feel they have to justify the costs. It's a feel good purchase.
  13. Some of these aftermarket intake/filter combos do indeed make more power but not all of that power occurs only at upper rpms. You will notice increased hp all of the way thru the rpm range but since the peak hp increase is at top rpm that's the figure they advertise. That being said, the manafacturers won't ever turn to these styles of intakes/filters for a few extra horses due to the extra noise generated by them (which some folks think sounds cool) If you follow the plastic air intake from the airbox to the throttle body on almost any new car you will find baffling, reduction tubes etc that are in place solely for the purpose of quietening the intake of air. Replace these parts and you'll surely see a measurable difference in hp.
