  1. Hope you're not going to poking around the burning smell thread too often. I got 15,000 before the car joined that club. 17,000 and still Ford has no answer. Getting out of hand.
  2. Not feeling good at all as the service mgr. really has no answer for me on what to do next. I don't want another seal kit again nor does he. They actually put all the other Edge's that were coming in for the same repair on hold. The service Mgr. is awaiting a call from a engineer that supposedly has knowledge of the failures and may shed some insight on it. Hmmmmm... I'm packing my bags as I type for a 3 night Snowmobile trip up in NH. This will keep my mind off of my Edge while I'm riding my intoxicating sled Gervais Ford will call me Monday eve, I'll post back then. as far as the car it only seems to smell after a 20+ mile ride or if the outside temps are warmer. Lately short trips----very cold outside. Doug
  3. Well after 6 days of the second seal kit and one shaft, my wife just called me on her way to work, and at a red light guess what? Calling them today and it'll go back again. wonder what they'll put in this time. Getting out of hand now.
  4. This really SUCKS!!!! Mine came back and wife is back driving the car, for who only know how long?? 2nd seal kit was put in last Friday.
  5. I forgot to include that my Edge also had the Kit(s) replaced and the axle shaft was replaced due to pitting on trip # 1. I never posted this on the Burning smell thread. Now I'm dealing with corroding wheels! Waiting till Spring to have them replace all 4.
  6. That's exactly what my service MGR. told me today. Next time I'm in for an oil change they'll take some digital pics of them and put on a complete new set come spring.
  7. Now that I have had a chance to wash the car myself @ home, I too have seen the black pitting. First it started on only one rear wheel , but now they have spread like cancer pitting all 4! Are each of you owners that have the etching live in areas where road salt is used? Seems like mine started right into winter. Will be calling the dealer today to document this, so in case they don't get replaced, I won't get hit with penalty @ lease end. I would assume this is a warrantable repair/coverage?
  8. I blame you for this burning smell mess! you started this post, so what do you do? dump the Edge and we inherit all your problems. Thanks :poke:
  9. Sounds like verbatim from my dealer. Who's your dealer, Gervais Ford in Ayer, Ma.? :shades:
  10. Service MGR. called last evening and I'm bringing the Edge to them this AM. They want to first make sure that the seal is indeed leaking again and not tech error. I insisted that the PTU be replaced instead of another seal kit . He did agree with me. I will have a vehicle to drive at N/C for as long as it takes he said. A good friend of mine works in Phoenix at a Lincoln dealer and he has seen this problem down there and has talked to his tranny. spec. who said, as we already knew, that there is a design flaw with the sealing rings for our Edges and Taurus' He told me not to expect the kit to work and the PTU should be replaced. It looks like many have seen these fail as well. isn't there a so called redesigned unit now????? What another backorder for the PTU?? As a side note any idea how a lease works if the vehicle is laid up or not driven for an extended period of time? Can Ford lease be notified, and therefore we would only be required to pay what was actually driven for said time??? I can see if we received a comparable car for a loaner, but to receive a VAN the first time during a snow storm! I need to look into this. Doug
  11. Nope same Fiiiing smell. Wifes eyes are burning!! Mad again. No one has returned my calls @ the service dept. In there defense we did get 8" of snow and are probably out straight. I want the PTU route. seals are junk. I will keep the customer care # and case # handy, I think I'll need it.
  12. I just got off the phone with Ford customer care. that gentleman stated that they do not call customers back nor arrange a meeting with a Ford rep. where did you get this info? All I have is a case started and a # assigned to it. He said to keep up dialoge with my dealer. I did state the fact about the road test that may not have been done after the "repair'. i mentioned the lemon law as well to him. My wife called me when she got to work and said she didn't notice any smell. we'll see when she drives home.
  13. The Mass Lemon Law applies to new and used cars up to 15,000 miles or one year whichever comes first. the defect needs to be repaired 3 times and still a failure. However I understand that even if you have exceeded one year or 15k, you can still qualify for a final opportunity repair which gives the dealer one more chance to fix it right. Then you can submit a letter to the manu. for a replacement or refund. What # is correct to call Ford about the Lemon Law? I did mention yesterday about having the entire PTU replaced if I have to return. He stated that they haven't had to replace the PTU yet as all the seals they replaced haven't come back??? Probably went to another dealer? Wife will take the car today because of the snow. I'll give it a day or two and call the dealer if this persists, and call Ford. Need that # please. Doug
  14. Well I just got back from the dealer, Good news they got it done by 10:00 am. BAD news by the time I drove the 20 miles back home the interior filled with that fricking burning smell again!! I shined a light under the car in the barn and I can't really tell what spilled when they did the repair or what is new. I would think any fluid would be burned off by then? A call to the dealer will follow tomorrow morning as they are closed @ 6 pm. This is what they did today: "Customer states right front seal leaking check and refill fluid. Verified concern removed right front axle and seal replaced right front axle and seal refilled fluid and verified repairs" QTY-1-8T4Z-7275-A kit QTY-1-7T4Z-3A329-BD shaft I asked them if they road tested the car and the lady looked at me and gave me an answer such as "of course". The mileage in exactly matches the mileage out. Stupid me never recorded it when I left. So goes another page in this continuing saga. I'll drive it tomorrow and see, we are getting nearly a foot of SNOW here. At least I have my therapy in my snowmobile :happy feet:
  15. Dropped off the Edge tonight @ the dealer. Only two of the kits came in and I was "lucky" number 2. Hopefully It'll be done for tommorow. They did give me a stylin' Econoline VAN for a couple of days, Made em give it to me N/C. Never got a good look underneath to see if the parts will be as galaxieman has stated. Stay tuned.
  16. Does anyone have the Ford customer care # handy? I would love it if the dealership would replace the entire PTU right from the start but I doubt it. They ordered the seal kit.
  17. Where are you located? My dealer has 10 kits on order and keeps checking every day. says should be in by the 26th? Looks like the same kit many have had concerns and failures with. Best of luck, we all need it!
  18. F#$&ing wonderful. I should have reposted, I did find out the 7251 is the entire unit. Yep the seal still carries the same #.
  19. I received the TSB this A.M. from the dealership concerning the PTU. the # for the TSB is 08-12-3. now looking at this TSB the publication date is May, 30 2008. Reading thru all of it makes alot more sense to me as I have not been able to inspect my car myself on a lift. I can only see by laying on the ground. I do see the red fluid dripping off between the motor and tranny. According the the paper "Red automatic transmission fluid (ATF ) is not used in the PTU itself. The RH intermediate shaft passes from the transaxle through the input hub of the PTU, where the intermediate shaft seal is located. a red ATF leak indicates fluid from the transaxle is leaking past this intermediate shaft seal contained in the PTU. Brown/Black fluid indicates a true PTU seal leak." What I was told and from what I can see I am leaking ATF fluid from the shaft seal. Also according to this report the part # for the Seal kit is 8T4Z-7275-A. I know there is a new vendor for the seals as I was told but I'm not sure if it carries the #7251. and has this held up?
  20. Go over to the Maintenence, TSB's section on this forum and start reading the first thread titled Burning Smell. I thought I was in the clear @ 16,000 miles. Just yesterday @ the dealership 3 more Edges came in with the same PTU seal leak! It sucks!!!! It's too bad other than a small tear in my headliner when I picked the car up last March, we love the Edge. Now I'm not so sure this repair will fix the problem for good. Wait till you read some other members horror stories.
  21. OK, apparently wrong info was given to me again by the service advisor not the manager . They did not top off the trans. fluid because the two techs that looked at my car felt it was in acceptable range. So what is leaking is tranny fluis coming out of the faulty PTU seal. The PTU at this point is NOT leaking. Gervais Ford has 10 of these seals on order from another manufacturer, as was stated by the Service MGR. Again I am second in line and he hopes to have them in house by 1/26?? A total of 4 Edges came just today with the same symptoms. This is totally unacceptable. I too believe that actions by many will be worth the effort. I will put a pint or so back into the tranny and drive the car as normal. Short trips around town should be ok. "should be" Not taking any chances with the kids in the car. Without pushing for a loaner it was stated that the best they could do was $19.95 a day, down from the normal daily rate of $49.95. I'm borrowing a family car now but if it takes longer than a week I'll demand a freebie, by next week if the parts are in, I may only need the loaner for a day or two anyway. Tech time is only 1.9 hrs for the seal. He sent me a fax of the TSB, I'll try to copy and paste tomorrow.
  22. I did finally get to speak to the Service MGR, he is personally talking to the Tech that inspected my Edge this AM. That is among the many questions he will be relaying back to me. From what I gather, the service adv. that was present this AM told me they topped off the trans fluid. I'll come back on when i get all the info. I'm second on their list of six now who are waiting for the seals
  23. I did check the tranny fluid after driving the car back from the 20 mile drive home from the dealership, the car was running and up to temp.
  24. I thought in the owners manual it states the PTU takes 75w-? Rear diff fluid. I left the manual in the glove box back at home. I'll recheck it again later. I'm calling the Service MGR. when he strolls in @ 11:30 to go to the loaner route.
