  1. I just bit the bullet and had them installed. I did look at the ebay ones, but here in Canada, the cost to get them shipped here, brought that $50 to closer to $150 after you paid shipping, plus the new forced brokerage/tax at purchase fee's that ebay now makes you pay. I had my local dealer install the TPMS figuring that I buy them now, and I'll have them for the next 8 or so years. I have seen friends blow far more than $250 in a night on a bar tab after tips.
  2. WOW.. I am sure glad that I didn't get the AWD Limited. Now, I will admit that I can live with the A/C turned off for most of the time. I also have this reflector that you put in your window when you leave the car so that the seats don't cook while you are gone shopping. But then again, I live just outside of Toronto in a nice city that believes in installing as many traffic lights as possible and timing them so if you drive the speed limit, you will always get the red light (Yea, a red light district) But around town even given the constant stop start, ass-wipe who cuts you off for trying to somewhat time the lights so you are at least rolling for the next green light, I still manage to get between 18-19mpg Get me onto the highway and I can easily get up around the 26-28mpg driving around the 65mph. So my 2013 FWD SEL sure sounds like a better deal.. or maybe it's just that I am driving less aggressively, allowing the car a bit more time to reach speed. I found that really helped keep the fuel costs down for me.
  3. Well wizard, you obviously like driving your mustang that much as have all your buttons in any easy to reach place, then why don't you just sell your Edge as you make it sound like in your mind it's just a piece of crap to you as it doens't have buttons where you want them. With your sale windfall you can go and buy yourself a second mustang as it's just a better car for you. Problem solved. For the rest of us in the real world, we can just go about actually driving and enjoying our edge. As I can't speak for the rest of the people here, but I generally get into my car as I am going some place, and having a radio or usb music is there as a pleasant bonus, not the reason for being there.. If it takes that 3-4 seconds more to change channel then so be it. It won't make or break my day either way.
  4. If you understand the function of the human eye, you would not be so quick to say that the mustang console you pictured can be used without taking your eyes off the road. You really have only a very small band of actual visual perception, and your brain works really fast to scan all sorts of directions to see the total area that your field of view perceives. But to say that you can simply reach your hand down to the side of you and click on the PreSet#2 button without even glancing down, you must be spending quite a bit of time changing ratio stations to spatially memorize where that is. I would think more than not, if you were doing this without looking, you'd be turning on the front defrosters or just doing a blind stab at some station, or more likely, feeling around to get your orientation where you mind now is not on driving but on figuring out where your hand really is as your forcing your eyes to stay looking at the road even though you are not really seeing what you are looking at. You would be correct to say that you can do a quick dart look to see what you are pushing and back to the road, and having an easy menu will make it quite quick. But I can with a simple flick of my thumb on the search button on the stearing wheel, scroll though the top 6 picks that I have programmed on the radio as the controls are right there on the edge steering wheel. Like the volume control is too. So why I need a redundant set of buttons on the console is beyond me. But the sony version I thought does have them. I will give you the side that having a better set of climate controls would have been nice, but to be quite honest, I have only ever needed to adjust them a few times as the auto settings do the job quite well. I do sometimes reach down to toggle the A/C mode as I find having it on too much for me induces a migraine headache so I can toggle that if needed, but I have not had the vehicle long enough to take the long summer drive up to cottage country and get the full effect of the auto climate to see if it was as brutal on my head as my manual controls on the escape. Perhaps I am a different person who doesn't do long haul driving where I would want to change media multiple times while driving over a long period. Each their own. But I do stand to say that the MFT does offer far more versatility in a single package that could not be offered if every component was separate. I personally like having all the function in one spot without the clutter.
  5. But the MFT does offer many improvements over past technology. On the radio, I now have my radio pre-sets channel number infront of me, so I know what button means what. But I also now gain a screen that tells me what is playing on my media device (ipod) when plugged in. Far better than that hooking up through a radio station input that I had to use on my Explorer. But most of all, think of all the functions that the MFT does. Now try and put ALL of these into an individual dedicated device and fit it into the same space on the dash. You may never use the Nav system, but I sure do. I may not need to set the temp all the time, but when I need to change the temp's or manual over-ride where it's coming from, then there are a whole bunch of buttons that would be needed. Then you put the radio there. Give yourself all that function. Oh. What about the reverse sensors and a screen for that. BTW, your cell phone. Can't use that while driving, so unless you tie that into a fixed interface on the car, guess you can't use it at all. I think it does a far better job when you look at it in a total package. Yes I could get a better sound system, but would I want to give up the rest just to get it.
  6. With this post thread, I took it upon myself to see what the Edge was like so that I could better drive. In modifying my driving habits, I have brought my driving down to the 10.x L/100km by simply letting up on the accelerator sooner and driving with a lighter touch. I've read a post on here where someone explained the shifting points on the car, and if you learn to better read those, you can get better fuel economy. It seems that Ford has a variable set of shifting points depending on the speed and vigor of your foot on the gas pedal. If you are light on the touch, then the Edge will be more agreeable to shift to the next gear sooner than if you let the engine rev up to get up to speed sooner. But this seems to be also tempered with what the car was doing. From my experimentation, I found that if you stamp on the gas peddle from a full stop, it will stay buried in the 70+L/100km range for far longer and likely stay in the lower gear and not shift up so your engine is using far more gas to cover the same distance at a given speed. However, if you took the extreme opposite side and was too light on the foot, the car will never reach a high enough critical speed to warrant changing gears and your transmission being stuck in 1st gear does not allow the engine to do it work very efficiently. However, if you take a middle ground approach for that first 30-40km/h then back off your foot on the gas peddle to allow the RMP's to to hold constant for a second or two, then the Edge will then decide to switch gears and the fuel economy gets vastly better. Then if re-apply your foot to the accelerator lightly, the edge will continue to accelerate but do so in a much more fuel efficient manner than before. If you simply lighten up on the accelerator after getting yourself to that first 30-40km/h and don't let the RMP's hold constant, I found that the fuel economy still stays up in the 20-25L/100km rather than dropping down into the 13-17L/100km and it your fuel consumption suffers greatly because of it. The down side to this method however is that you do slow down a slight bit, and it can take 4-5 seconds longer to get the Edge up to the maximum speed posted for the city road. This in turn will tick off all the lead foot drivers behind you who for whatever reason are very eager to get to that next red light and stop well before you. Just some observations I made while driving for the past few days with my Edge. Matt
  7. Am I missing something here. I have driven in many cars, and for some reason, I have yet to see one that has every single control sitting on the steering wheel of the car so that you can do everything without taking your eyes off the road. So to single out one vehicle because it's a touch screen seems rather odd, when I will have to say with my old Ford Escape, it had a dial that you needed to take your eyes off the road to find on the dash, and then turn with you eyes looking at it to get the right temp you wanted. And if you wanted to change radio stations, then you took your eyes off the road and found the radio and pushed the corresponding presets. My edge SEL, if I turn on the radio, I can with a simple thumb flick switch between my pre-set radio stations and not need to look. +1 for the edge. Likewise, i can with a quick peek make sure that my menu is on climate on the front console, then up and down the temp without needing to look. My father has a Toyota Prius, and Consumer Reports just loves that car to bits. But for him to change temp and turn on/off the AC, he needs to go to his touch screen so it's just as bad if not worse than the edge for quite a bit of things. But it's a Toyota Hybrid so nobody touch the sacred cow. If anyone is going to get bent out of shape with the MFT and think it causes too much distraction, then you should drive along at rush hour along the 403 and see the distracted drivers in all the other cars. I have seen people reading newspapers, many women with the rear view mirror twisted around putting on makeup. I've seen someone curling their hair while driving. The number of people I've followed who spent more time looking at the passenger beside them than at that actual road. The 30 seconds to use the MFT is nothing. God gave people a brain between their two ears, and heaven forbid they actually use it.. maybe even think and see what is going on around you before taking your eyes off the road, and if there is lots going on around you, then keep your attention on what you are doing. But common sense seems to be no so common these days. Matt
  8. I have a Google Nexus Galaxy smartphone. It's getting on in the years, and not supported by Google any more. I have modded it to use Cyanogenmod to get 4.4 kitkat, but the battery is getting so it lasts a day maybe two in standby, so I pretty much need to plug it into the car when driving. The cellphone company that I am with basically took me for a ride as my wife lost her cell phone 2 years ago, so I gave her my old one and bought the Nexus Galaxy to replace the lost one, and ended up with the TAB getting messed up and I still owe them $600 for the cell phone but that gets cleared down to ZERO in 15 more months. It's too much hassle to get them to fix their mistake as I still need the phone service. I was thinking of getting a newer/better phone, and as my wife has agreed my daughter needs her own phone for emergencies, then a new phone will be needed to be got regardless. So what phone to get. Perimeters: - I am frugal in some ways and don't want to be spending a whole heap of money for a phone. - I would prefer this time not to get roped into these long term contracts, so I was planning to buy the phone outright and take advantage of the discounts they offer for bring you own phone with my provider. - I want a smart phone and don't want anything worse that what I have got. I'd prefer something much faster and better actually. - Don't really care about the camera as I have a real camera if I want to take photographs. I was thinking of getting the Google Nexus 5, but I hear that they will be coming out with the Nexus 6 by the end of the month. Is it worth waiting for the latest or buy last years model?
  9. Well, I spent way too much time into trying to save a few dollars it seems. I contacted tirerack and went through all the alternatives to get tires for less and it worked out by the time I got complete wheels (rims + tires + tpms) converted back to CAD and covering the cost to pick them up from Niagara UPS store, was within $50 of just buying them here. Then I was told about www.buffalonytires.com/ and they run specials for Canadians. The cost of the tire was clearly cheaper over there. The tires I was quoted for $209 cost $130, then the but's come into play. That was just the tire, and install/balance was an extra $15 per tire. The rim's were $120 + 15 for the hub alignment cone made out of plastic. TPMS was $49 each. But still need to convert that from USD to CAD as we are not at par. Again, the cost difference was at best $70 savings. So I ended up just buying the Nokian Hak-R and was given a break on the tpms by the local garage who knocked off $75 from the total. I got aluminum rim with a proper metal hub alignment cone, fully installed for my $1700 all taxes in CAD. I am getting them on the 22nd so I have my new tires for when my relatives come over from the UK to visit.
  10. When I think back to all my vehicles in the past, I will say that I have been the most happiest with the past 3 fords. I will admit that I have never had a perfect car, but I think it would be too much to ask. Each had their own nuances that you learn to live with, and as long as you are willing to adapt yourself to the car, rather that believing that the car should adapt to what you feel you want, then you'll be fine. My Ford Explorer Sport was a great vehicle, but it did have it's issues with the blend door, so you had either full A/C or no A/C.. A few zip-ties and I made up a compromise that got me through the last 3 summers of it's life. My Ford Escape felt like a move up in class and convenience, but you had to learn how to drive it as it was very twitchy with way too much torque at the low end that you could easily spin the tires at starting, but petered out above 50mph so you needed caution when overtaking. This new 2013 Edge SEL is real nice in the comfort department. The car has loads of power, but fuel economy really suffers if you push the car to go. I have learnt to be more gentle with the pedal and can now get even 380-400 miles to a tank around the city. I didn't get that with my Escape. The MFT is rather a pain and will do strange things on it's own, but I have learnt how to coax it back to what I want. Sure there are far better cars out there, but I can't afford them, and value for dollar spent, I have a hard time to beat what I got.
  11. I did end up calling the Sync people at ford and the nice lady suggested that the dealer should have the 3.7 update and all I need to do is book for an update at my local dealer. I might give them a call on Monday and see what they have to say about it.
  12. Having just got my Edge, I am coming to the party a little bit late. I don't know if anyone still responds to this thread. In the first few posts, there was a bit about 303 Products, but what was not clearly defined was which one works best with the vinyl inside. Looking on amazon, there are 130350 Aerospace Protectant , 130552 Fabric and Vinyl Cleaner, 130616 High Tech Fabric Guard with Water Repellant, so I am not sure which one he was referring to. Also, I gather from the talk about clay barring and other stuff .. is getting into territory that I have not one clue about. I can pay for this to be done at one of the local auto-spa detailing places near by me, but to be quite honest, I can't really afford it. Later on there is talk about a sealer that is recommended, but I don't know what or more importantly where to get one. After spending a good $24K on a car, I'd like to get a good 8-9 years out of it, so spending a little up front to get it done right makes a bit of sense. But when you have not too much of a clue as to where to spend it or what is right makes that task a bit more hard. The edge is 2 years old. I have no clue what the previous owner has or has not done, but I'd like to protect my investment as much as possible with the limited money that I have. What will give me the best bang for my buck.
  13. i am confused about this 3.7 as when i log into syncmyride it has some splash screens bout some new update but then goes on to tell me that my 3.6.2 is the most up to date.
  14. I have looked on ebay and did see that there are some for sale. It is a bit more confusing as there seems to be two different styles, or maybe they are the same, but one comes with a valve stem and the other looks like a flat band. As I am not the one installing them, I am not sure how the tire center will react if I hand them a set and say use these. I do know that if I use theirs, then they are bound to support them and can't use the "oh, your problem is from..." line on me. I guess it could just translate it into a beer equation. No beer for me for the next 2 months and that will cover the cost of adding in the TPMP from the tire center.
  15. I can understand the side of the K&N air filter, and it is something that I am looking into doing myself. I am however intrigued about your thoughts for going with ceramic breaks. The first question that pops into my head is "WHY? What will that give you?". Now I have owned cars that I have often pondered the engineering and if the designers had ever bothered to drive what they had created and experienced the sheer terror of trying to stop and thought, if only they would have put in larger rotors and pads. (my 96 ford explorer comes to mind) But my edge clearly does not fall into that category. The rotors and pads are massive, and I would never see myself wanting to drive this car fast enough to warrant needing larger or more efficient breaking systems. This is not a Ferrari or a Lamborghini by any stretch of the imagination. So what would ceramic breaks give that are not there on the standard system? The thought behind ceramic pads was that in stopping at extreme speeds, your regular pads would vaporize as the rotor heated up and breaking would fade. Do you find that in your driving patterns your rotors are turning a nice cherry red from use? Or is there an Autobahn in the Mississippi Valley Region that i have been missing where taking my edge up to redline is possible? That would be rather cool and worth the trip out. I get the thought of playing with the suspension to get rid of the body roll on cornering, but my solution was to just take it a bit slower and have fun with the roll you get. Getting rid of that mass of chrome up front also might be something that I will consider.. But please let me in on the ceramic breaks. i am very curious.
  16. For me around the town i try really hard but can't seem to keep my car much below 11.3L/100km for around town. It's all the red lights that kill me as I am sure they put a special camera at every street corner to switch the light to red for me as I approach. Recently I've been up around the 13.4+L/100km and it's getting depressing as the number goes up pretty quick, but when I get myself even crusing at 60km and the instant gauge is low, the number doesn't want to come down. Get it onto the highway and I can get myself around the 7.8~8.2L/100km. it's an average thing as if you have more uphill the gas is far worse than if your going somewhere more downhill. I have not had the car long enough to really get a sense of what the fuel economy is like. But on my old 2007 escape, if you were very quiet, you could hear the engine sucking the fuel tank dry.
  17. As great as the prices are from the TireStore, the cost of getting them up here negates any price advantage that I could possibly get. My local tire stores here like to baffle with babble so you don't really know where you stand One store was telling me that you simply cannot get hub-centric rims in steel, and gave me the whole speech about why you would want it over a general multi fit rim that uses the lugs to center. Will set aluminum ones for $100 each. The other store at the other end of town claims that their $60 steel rims are hub-centric but for some reason can't tell me a model number or who the manufacturer is. Not bestowing confidence. The store in nearby Toronto has got better prices on the tires but admit that the steel rims are not hub-centric but will sell me an aluminum rim for far more than the local store that pretty much negates the savings on the tires. There are two different tires that I am interested in. The michelin Xice and the Nokian Hak-somethingorother from what I have read, the Nokian tire is the better one, but it's about $130 more when you take into account the $70 mail in rebate that you might get back from michelin. But I know from past experience with the way I drive, tires seem to last with me, so buying these winters along with the tires on the car, I probably will not need to buy tires again for the life of the vehicle. So, I could use the difference between the Michelin and Nokian towards the TPMS.. forgo the TPMS and get the better Nokian. Save the dollars and just get the Michelin's with no TPMS. Go for broke and get all the best. Does the car go mad on the dash without the TPMS or is it just the (!) tire warning light on the dash? I am changing the tires myself so i'd have to handle the re-learn process myself.
  18. I personally did not like the eco - boost engine at all. I test drover several used edge's and found that the V6 just felt more responsive and smoother than either of the eco-boost turbo's that I tried. One of them quite simply felt like the turbo just was not there and getting onto the highway and even wanting to overtake someone, I feared that I could easily get myself into trouble if I was driving this every day. Unless you stamped onto the gas peddle and waited 3-4 seconds, the engine just didn't really want to respond. Now I can't say how well the cars were maintained, but buying a used car how really do you? Also, from a tires perspective, the 20" rims do look nice to some, but I find the rubber band look of the wheels to be too much of a joke for me, and good luck getting any form of traction over winter time. You are in a snow belt, so you're just going to have to pick up some 17 or 18" rims regardless to put on a decent set of snow tires if you value having any stopping power on the highway when driving. Think slush wet roads with black ice.
  19. Way back when I got my Ford Explorer (1996) the Bra was the rage. It did protect for a bit until it got grungy and then trapped stones and bits inside and ended up destroying the front of your car. My wifes 2006 Kia has one of those plastic wing front deflectors. It has non of the problems of trapping debris, but I have no idea how bad it effects the wind resistance and in turn the fuel economy. On a 3.5L V6, you need all the help you can get to keep the engine from sucking the fuel tank dry. (and I simply didn't like the way the ecoboost drove on all the cars I test drove). What are the current going options that make sense for this type of vehicle? thanks
  20. I guess that I should introduce myself, even though I have already jumped in both feet. I am now a happy owner of a Ruby Red 2013 Edge SEL, and very impressed with the comfort and ride that I have got. You may wonder about the title. This is my 5th vehicle that I have owned (four of which were Fords). My first was an old Mercury Capris that really should have been destined for the junk yard but at 19, it was all that I could afford. After driving it into the ground in 2 years, I moved to a VW Fox that worked well but I knew that I wanted more. So in 1996 I bought a new Ford Explorer Sport, and got a full 12 years of good driving out of it. That was a real SUV, and I drove it through everything. But vehicles wear out, and the cost of maintaining seemed to exceed the value of the vehicle, so I moved to a smaller but more upscale 2006 Ford Escape LTD. The ride was more refined and added some of those comforts not found in my old Explorer like heated seats, reverse sensors, and a CD player. Now I have the Edge that I guess they call a crossover not an SUV. I can see why as the ground clearance is so much less than what I had with the explorer, and it's not nearly as rugged, but I now have a ride that is very comfortable, and technology/gadgets that never seem to end. I guess if I went with a LTD Explorer now, it would have the same, but also at a price I could not afford. I am glad that I have a great resource to look up what I need to know, and a friendly place to ask my questions and get opinions from those in the know.
  21. I spoke with my sales rep and was told that they only have the A4 here in Oakville, so that is the latest ones that they have. It comes down to a bit of semantics with me as Ford is advertising the A5 so I would have thought that was the latest and if you promise that with the sale of a vehicle then it looks best to deliver that. Not this it will make my enjoyment of this car any less I guess. I have seen the A5 on sale on some of those bidding sites like ebay. They are not coming from China so they might even be legitimate copies. I am wondering how often Ford releases a new set of maps? I ask as we are getting on to the end of 2014, and if there is a new set of maps every year, then it might be better to wait for a year to get the newer maps with the new stuff added. But if it's a longer release cycle, then I'd consider picking a newer set up now.
  22. Glad that you got it working. My wife had an intermittent airbag error on her KIA. The garage wanted to replace the passenger airbag plus the front sensors. i said no, but the garage in inspecting had adjusted the wire harness (that was the actual issue) and not had a problem since. that was 3 years ago. now i- know to check wires first myself.
  23. So, I am to gather that a 17" rim will fit on this vehicle and not interfere with the disc break calipers? While also surfing, the Tire Store also said something about the TMPS sensors that you need a device that will cause either the sensors or the car to properly talk with each other when you switch wheels. Is it one of those things that is a nice to have but not needed.. ie the car will sense the wheels but it might take 2-4 miles for the sensors to get recognized, and that device just makes it instant... ?? The mosy important question is the rim size. will 17" definitely fit?
  24. To answer my own question.. I spent the 30 min on the driveway with the car running to bring myself up to 3.6.2 and the map is still sitting at A3, so no it does nothing to update the maps. I guess it's a trip out to the dealership to get them to honor the sales persons promise to give me the latest set of maps.
  25. I think the stop looking at other car's comment is a valid one. I just picked up a 13 SEL, and did the mistake of still looking. Saw a 12 Limited for $250 more than what I paid. It would have had leather and the 12 speaker upgrade. it had AWD but also had no warranty left on the vehicle and black seats that are murder in the summer here. It comes down to six of one half dozen of the other. Once the money is spent there is little you can do to get it back sort of earn more.
