The leak is from the PTU in these cases. Checking the trans fluid doesn't help, they are 2 separate cases. To check the ptu the vehicle has to be up in the air and a plug removed to check it.The ptu is supposed to be "filled for life" according to Ford thus no easy way for the consumer to check it.

A recall usually involves them having a fix to put on the problem. They don't have one. If the redesigned PTU leaks the rep is already aware that I am going to be screaming lemon law. They say they understand how I feel but that is a long way from sayine, here is your excahnge vehicle.
-
The new design seal doesn't hold. Good luck with that.
-
Don't know if they will go straight to the updated one or make you take the painful non working seal routine a couple of times first
-
The part number for the redesigned PTU is 8T4Z-7251-A
-
Unless the redesigned PTU is a good one, the replacement of the same vehicle will not do any good. The new ones have the same one. I did the the redesigned for leaks unit in mine and got it back today. I do not have the paperwork in front of me but will post the part # in the a.m.

I am supposed to get mine back today. If I can get the part number for the new design I will post it here. As far as how far one can go before it causes damage would depend on things like, how big the leak is, was it full of fluid when you left or had it already leaked half of it out before you left. There are a lot of variables that would make that a hard question to answer. The damage that it causes is bearings being ran without oil. Once the bearings reach a point of wear they cause gears to get out of alignment and when that happens it will break the teeth off the gears and the vehicle doesn't move anymore. If it is ran low for too long and then fixed the gears and bearings in the ptu may whine and increase in frequency with the speed of the vehicle.

The engineer looked at mine. It is getting a new PTU. It supposedly was just released the past few days. It is redesigned specifically for the leak problem. It is a new part number but I have not got it back yet to know what the number is.

Mine has had a PTU and 2 seals. It is back in again waiting for the "engineer" to come look at it. I have had enough of this nonsense. Unless the engineer has a magic potion I am pushing for the lemon law.
-
Well my "kit" is supposed to be installed tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement I may as well have called the local barber shop instead of the Ford customer service line. The answer to everything was, iam not a technician, i don't know.

I wonder how this seal is going to be any different from all the others they have replaced? Take it on a couple hundred mile run down the highway and see what happens.

Ford Contacted me. Mine is supposed to go in tomorrow. They are supposed to have an engineer look at the problem. Like they have not ever had this problem before. I am going to try and talk to the engineer. I have a theory, I am in the repair business so I know a little bit about it. It usually starts with a burning rubber smell. I believe the exhaust passes too close to the transfer case. The exhaust burns the rubber seal, then the leaking begins. Mine usually involves a long drive down the highway and when I stop I smell the rubber. It is my opinion the 200-300 mile highway run gets it hot enough to do damage. I had a gm vehicle that their engineers could not fix. I told them my theory and they discarded it. Finally I got mad and fixed it myself. They refused to reimburse me even though the problem was gone. It chaps me off to spend this kind of money on something then have to finish their design!

I have called the Ford Customer Service number listed in the manual. It is supposed to be assigned to an engineer/service rep and they are supposed to contact me within the next 2 business days. If we all make noise to ford and the NTSB listed above maybe something will happen. Posting it on here is good info for other owners but unless we take it to the people responsible nothing will change. Aside from the leak being a dirty problem and an awful odor, keep stressing the fact of it being a safety hazard. The safety hazard to the occupants is more likely to get something done. They might not care about us being irritated by the leak but do they really want to risk someone getting burned? I read of a recall on the Mini Cooper just because the end of the tailpipe stuck out beyond the rear bumper and someone might come in contact with it and get a leg burn. If that was important enough for a recall I would think a fire breaking out underneath as we drive down the street would command some attention. The customer service line asked what would be considered a resolution for me. I told them I either wanted a permanent fix or them to buy the vehicle back.
-
I filed a complaint at www.safercar.gov If everyone on here that owns a leaker filed a complaint maybe they would come up with a fix. It is a safety hazard as it could and may have caused fires. They are interested in those kind of issues.

Mine has had a seal. Then it had a case 6 or 8 months ago. Now it is leaking and stinking again. I called the Ford customer service line and started a case. They asked what my purpose was, I told them to get a permanent fix or buy it back I am tired of this.

I want to put in a destination and a waypoint then save it to my address book. I can't seem to make it do this. I can add the destination and save it to my address book no problem. When I add the waypoint I have to add it to the destination only. There is no way to save the destination with a waypoint as a trip in the address book. Anybody figured out how to do this?

the end user cannot increase the warm idle speed. It is computer controlled.

I don't see voice commands. I think what you are seeing is the adjustments for voice directions. If that is not so, where are you seeing voice commands?
-
Mine took a new transmission per the tsb. It is better but is still not completely gone.
-
If your vehicle is under warranty it should be covered. However all TSB's do not apply to all of the vehicles built, there are production dates etc to comply with. If your vehicle is out of warranty a TSB usually acknowledges a certain problem and describes a fix for it. Just because it is a TSB doesn't always mean it is covered. A "Recall" usually takes care of all the vehicles fitting the criteria.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since we took ours to the shop. The trans didn't come in when it was supposed to. Then there was a seal that took forever for them to get. Now they just called and said Ford had contacted the dealer with a new design for an external cooler and it is being shipped in, so maybe by the end of the week it will be done. I am in no hurry, my miles were way higher than I wanted them to be so this will help get my average back down.
-
Let us know if you ever figure it out.
-
Your prediction was wrong. They just called. A whole new transmission is what it is getting. They are ordering it in and should have it by the end of the week. I will get the details on it later.

I had a GM product that did that once. The GM help line asked me dumb questions like, "Do you have a large luggage container on top?" I was so hacked that I set it up for arbitration then 2 days before the meeting GM decided they were not going to arbitrate fuel economy and told me I could file suit if I wanted to hire a lawyer on my own. I was not just a little short of the sticker, I was getting half of what others were getting. I own a shop so I started doing some testing myself. If the computer has been told the data should be between 2 points and it is there, no problem shows up. I got to thinking that a typo in the software may be causing it to think things were ok but were not. The guys at the dealership thought it was possible. They were prepared to use a vin from an identical vehicle that was getting correct mileage and download the software to mine.GM heard about it and told the service manager he would be looking for a job if he did it. They considered it modifying the vehicle. I bought a Superchips power programmer and installed their software in the vehicle. I was right. The mileage went to where it was supposed to be with more power to boot. I had to spend $500.00 to fix a vehicle that was under warranty and the manufacturer refused to do anything about it!
