Steering control issues. Help!

Recommended Posts

My volume control button and the call hang up button on my steering wheel in my 2013 Edge used to work intermittently and then a few weeks ago they completely stopped working. Tonight, I took it the old one out and replaced it with a brand new OEM switch cluster. I put it all back together and the volume button and call hang up button still don't work. But the SYNC voice command button and everything else in the switch cluster work. Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? Maybe bad wiring or a loose connection? I'm at a loss for what it could be. When it was all pulled apart all the wiring appeared to be fully intact. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I may have responded in a different forum, I would suspect the slip ring or wiper(s) next in the series (in there you only stated the volume control Switch was intermittent, not two switches).

In the other forum I recommended turning the steering wheel and see if it had any effect on the volume control. (To access the slip ring, you would need to pull the steering wheel).

There is also a lessor chance that the wiring to the slip ring could have become damaged from the tilt wheel function (only a guess as it's well secured). However you could check it by pulling the cover on the steering shaft and visibly checking. (I've never done this on an Edge/MKX but I understand that it involves removing a couple of screws. Remove the cover and see if you can see any wiring getting pinched when moving the wheel up and down, in and out. Anytime electrical conductors are involved in movement (even though they are stranded), they can break or get weakened.

Hey Tmcharest,

I recommend checking to see if there's a software update available. If there isn't, perform a master reset on the vehicle. Check out the links below:

Software update: https://owner.ford.com/tools/account/how-tos/keep-your-sync-up-to-date.html

Master reset: https://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/sync/phone-setup/how-to-perform-a-master-reset.html?sync=sync

Keep me posted!
