Neutral>Drive>Reverse... Shifting Question

This may be a simple answer but i checked my manual before posting. :reading:

In any other car I've driven or owned, You did not need to press the button on the shifter to go From "Drive" to "Neutral"( this was explained to me,as a safety feature so that the passenger could slip the car into "neutral" from "drive" if the driver became unconscious at the wheel, thereby stopping any accelaeration. )

My 2008 Edge doesnt have this ability. I Have to press the button in order to go from "drive" to "neutral"

...i do NOT however, have to press the button to go from "Reverse" to "neutral" or "Neutral" to "drive".

Is this done for a reason?/Is mine working as it should ?

Any Input on this subject is Appreciated

~Mike
