Capless Fuel Tank -- Special Funnel

Recommended Posts

I inherited a 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD.  It has the capless gas tank filler "feature."  It did not have the special plastic funnel that is required to add gas from a gas can.  I purchased one online so I would have it if I ever ran out of gas.  I don't remember where I bought.  I tried to use it and the straight part of the funnel is too large to insert into the opening.  The diameter is 15/16th inch.  Molded into the plastic funnel is a little diagram showing the funnel inserted with tipped gas can dripping fuel.  The only thing I can figure is that there are different sizes of this special funnel, perhaps for some country other than the U.S.

Other than a Ford dealer, where can I get the correct size funnel?  The OEM part is over $20 which seems outrageous.

This is the one I bought (for a different purpose, I don't have the capless fuel fill on my MKX.)  Excellent quality and is reported to fit the Edge.

Manufacturer advertises it's an "exact replacement" for the original Ford part number 8U5A-17B068-AD. $5

Bite the bullet and get OEM. I use my funnel regularly to add a fuel additive (Startron) before every fill up. Of course I have lost a couple of them over the years. But they are the only way to get fuel into the vehicle in an emergency. Trust me, 20 bucks is nothing when you need/depend on it.

r some reason my search didn't find all the alternative sources tht appeared in the link shown in an earlier post.  It turns out there at least two sizes.  The one I had purchased earlier whic his dark gray was too big.  One listing described it as for Ford Diesel vehicles.  I think the diesel pumps at service stations have larger diameter dispenser nozles.  A safety feature that prevents accidently trying to put diesel fuel into a gasoline vehicle.  A better Google search led me to an identically shaped yellow plastic funnel at Advance Auto Parts.  I went to the Advance store about a mile from my house and purchased one.  I tried it in my vehicle and it fit just fine.  It cost only $2.99.  Advance carried the larger version but didn't stock it in the store.

Mystery solved. I'll keep the correctly sized yellow one in my 2016 Edge.  Thanks for all the help. In the future I will get gas before I see the "low gas" warning on the display.
