dap1 Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 I purchased a Certified Used 2008 Edge SEL AWD from a dealership last Saturday. Today I noticed some damage underneath the vehicle. Attached to the frame, behind both front tires is a thick welded metal piece that runs horizontally next to where the front tires attach to the frame. This piece looks fine and unused on the passenger side of the vehicle, but on the drivers side, it is bent upwards, has a major scrape and the piece is tearing off of the frame. I don't know what this piece is used for, or if it needs to be used at all. Can someone help identify it? And keep in mind that you do not need to identify the piece for the Service Department, you only need to show/report the damage. Therefore, what I would highly recommend is while you are waiting for someone here to answer, you should bring your Edge back immediately (or as soon as possible), and show the Dealership the damage. In this way there is less chance that they can attempt to claim it happened after you purchased. My guess? Looks as though someone may have tried to improperly jack the car up (maybe using a floor jack) and caught that piece, instead of a solid area. Either way, the longer you wait to report the damage, the less chance of getting it repaired under the "Certified Used' Warranty/Guarantee. TexanF250 Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 What I think that you are looking at is a gusset welded to the frame to provide a jacking point at the front of the vehicle. The fact that is it bent may or may not be a real big deal. Here is what concerns me however. The weld appears to have torn loose from the frame. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED. The weld to frame has appearsw to have no penetration into the frame. IF SO, THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. What other welds on the vehicle are inadequate? While the damage to the gusset was obviously cause by someone runing over something, I would argue that the gusset would never have torn loose and consequently, never have become bent had it been welded in place properly. Ford should fix this under warranty and all other critical welds should be inspected to ensure this is not a problem elsewhere on the vehicle.
