Factory AUX in with Aftermarket Head unit?

Recommended Posts

I am installing a Pioneer DVD receiver in a 2008 Edge. No RSE or NAV, but the stock radio did have an aux input and USB port in the center console. I'd like to tie into that if I could. I ordered a aux in wiring adapter, (RCA plugs on one end to go into my radiuo, Ford OEM plug on the other to tie into the car harness) but the pins are in the wrong place on the plug. :banghead:

Also, I cant seem to find anything that ties the USB socket wires from the factory harness into a regular male USB plug that I can plug into my new Pioneer.

I don't mind cutting, splicing, and soldering if anyone knows the wire colors of the AUX in plug and which ones are R+, R-, L+, and L-.

Anybody done this? Thanks.

I didn't have the stock usb port so i used the pioneer cable for ipod. This cable also allows for track info, album artwork, and video to be displayed on the unit so that's the route i took. I also had no need for the aux in jack because of this. Now if you're not using an ipod, then that doesn't help. Can you rearrange the pin order on your plug to match the harness?

That's what I'm gonna try. I'll post results if I have any success.

BTW, do you know if I can just plu in my ipod to the regular USB outlet using the standard iPod usb cable? That's they way i do it on the stock radio and the Pioneer units in my other cars. They don't have video tho...wonder if the music will still play.

Thanks for the replies.

If you want to keep both you may want to look into the sync retention harness. This harness makes both the aux plug and usb still work. It them has an output (rca style) for you to plug into the aux input on the pioneer. They are expensive, but then you also still have the sync functions

OK guys, here is what I have learned:

The Scosche double DIN mounting kit for 2004+ fords works fine, even tho they don't list the Edge in the instructions.

The Scosche FD23B wire connector also works fine.

The Scosche FDAKB "Ford antenna adapter" DOES NOT WORK. I actually found a Chrysler adapter that fit and seems to be working...not sure why that would be...

Metra 70-5520AUX "Ford Aux in retention" adapter DOES NOT WORK for 2 reasons - 1 the pins that the adapter uses aren't used in the car harness, and 2 it has RCA plugs on the radio end and the AUX in that I want to use on the radio needs a 1/8" input jack.

The regular USB cable that comes with my iPod works fine to listen to and control the ipod throught the head unit. The only thing I cannot do is view video. This is good enough for me now...

I plan to route a 1/8" aux cable ad the USB cable into the center console where the OE jack is.

wkevingossett's park break video fix works good. Thanks for the help on this.
