Aftermarket Navigation

Recommended Posts

I just got an 08 Edge Limited with the navigation. I'm not to impressed with the whole head unit and user interface. What are some other options out there that are good?

I found this one eBay and really like it. Thoughts?

I figure I can get $400-$600 on eBay for my unit?

Was going to pull the trigger on this eBay one today, but thought I'd ask first. :)

if you have a factory unit now you may be disappointed with that unit you have shown. its basically a "china" made factory look-a-like. yes it does offer functions like the dvd, ipod...

For that kind of money i would look in to a brand name like alpine, pioneer, kenwood.

Nah, I haven't had time to look all that much and I still don't really know what to look for haha. I haven't done enough reading yet. I have had a garmin GPS for a few years now, and really like that interface, so the Kenwood (garmin gps) really appeals to me. But I've been looking at the TOL Pioneer one.

They are about $800 on ebay if you bid on it.

To anyone who knows something:

What is my factory unit worth? I have someone that will pay me $450 for it, then he'll resell it on eBay,. Is $450 a good deal? Would be with nav dvd and gps antenna.

Another question, what do I lose when I hook up an aftermarket head unit? I have Snyc, how is that affected? Do I really have to run my own mic cable out and usb/line-in cables even though I already have them built in?

I have the premium sound in my Edge also, everything with a new head unit will be abel to utilize that?

Haha, looks like I opened a can of worms on you.

In able to keep sync you will need the sync retention harness. However depends on the aftermarket unit you buy it may come with all the sync functions built in (bluetooth and ipod/usb). The sync retention harnesses are about $200-250. IMO dont worry about sync and just get the harness that you will need. If you want to retain your steering wheel controls (if you have them) you will need a module for that also. They go for abotu $80-125.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the unit has all the Sync functions... I haven't taken my unit out, will I be able to just hook up my new unit to the usb/line in jack that I have in my center console? And what about the built in mic? Or is that what the $200 retention unit does?

I'm looking to spend $800-$900 for a new one on eBay. You guys have specific units in this range you'd suggest?

I installed a Eclipse 62D nav unit in my Wifes Edge with the steering wheel controls and bluetooth for her cell phone. It is a great product but this is their last year of manufacturing so you can probably get a good price but tech support will be very limitied in the future.

  • 4 months later...

I'm thinking of doing something similar.

I've got a new 2010 Edge with the standard audio system and, of course, SYNC.

I'm already weary of the head unit - looking for a good navigation system and, if possible and not too much more, to keep the SYNC.

I've been looking hard at the Alpine INA-W900 system along with this to retain sync:

Any comments, suggestions would be welcome.

I don't really want to keep the SYNC because I can always call the 800 number for SYNC's Services, and the H.U. has all of the bluetooth hands-free calling, but I know my wife will be upset if I tell her that the SYNC's 911-assist feature will be removed. Maybe the $130 to keep the SYNC is worth it :-)

Any comments about the Alpine and/or SYNC retention?

Scott
