Marccom
Hi, on Friday, the 28. May i was on the FORD Regional Tour 2010 in Leverkusen. This were an official press conference of FORD Germany and presentation of - Ford RS500 Limited - Ford S-Max 2.0 EcoBoost with Powershift-Transmission - Ford Galaxy 2.0 EcoBoost with Powershift-Transmission At 0900 was the beginning with the welcoming and breakfast buffet. After that was the first period of test driving till press conference at 1200 and lunch time. From 1300 till planned end at 1500 was second period of test driving. So I took the chance to testdrive 4 cars. First i drove the Ford Focus RS with 300 HP 2.5 TurboEngine...very impressive car. Second was the limited Edition of the "normal Focus RS"...the RS500. This edition is some louder, faster and more pure....the same 2.5 engine has a larger turbocharger with 1.7 bar turbo impact instead of 1.4 bar. So the engine has power of 345 HP and more torque. RS500 is limited to 500 produces and already sold out. 4 of them were on the regional tour. RS500 is always mat black because of highquality 3M-foil ex works. Most other is as like as on RS, but with red 500 on the back under the RS-logo, production number on center console below navigation system and red leather seating. RS and RS500 are real sports cars with extreme impressive driving qualities. accelaration to 60 clear below 6 seconds and topspeeds around 180mph-area. Especially driving RS500 is feeling amazing. The next car was the Ford Galaxy EcoBoost and after that the S-Max with same engine and PowerShift...with that we come closer to the main topic. With the 2.0 Ecoboost the Galaxy and S-Max come to the following extraction of technical data: Galaxy.........................................................................................S-Max ............................................- engine: 2.0 Turbo - 1.999ccm ............................................- engine power: 200HP - 203PS ............................................- torque: 221lb-ft - 300Nm - curb weight: 3807lbm - 1727kg.....................................................- curb weight: 3695lbm - 1676kg - gross weight: 5401lbm - 2450kg....................................................- gross weight: 5302lbm - 2405kg - topspeed: 136mph - 217kph...........................................................- topspeed: 138mph - 221kph - acc 0-60: 8.8sec...........................................................................- acc 0-60: 8.5sec ............................................- mileage: ............................................21.6mpg [11.0L/100km] city ............................................37.2mpg [ 6.4L/100km] highway ............................................29.3mpg [ 8.1L/100km] combination ............................................(european standard calculation NEDC) Impressions The S-Max is quite more sporty as the Galaxy...the Galaxy more comfortable. The 200HP engine in combination with the new PowerShift-Transmission (Dual-Clutch-System) makes both vehicles feeling light and agile. Even the Galaxy, which is looking and feeling roomy with (...not too...) soft suspension is reacting quick and easy after pedal orders. Engine is also quite silent and smoothy running in all situations and accelaration is possible without disturbing turbocharging gaps. The dual-clutch-transmission PowerShift is changing gears in quick and smooth matter...so also satisfying. Manual input is completely unnecessesary...all in all quite senseless and tryings in fact disturbing. Guess cause of weight and room the Galaxy is most comparable with the Edge. Edge is heavier, but will get something about 30HP more as the Galaxy/S-Max. For Europe more versions of the 2.0 EcoBoost are anounced, too...below and above the 200HP. 2.0 Ecoboost is feeling agile but not real strong. That will be the main difference to the V6 TIVCT and V6 EcoBoost in other models. V6 TIVCT and V6 EcoBosst will not be available in Europe...in any model. Same is assured for the Edge. Guess the 2.0 EcoBoost is a quite satisfying engine and in S-Max, for example, even something like very facetious and sporty to move. But for vehicles like the Edge the TVICT-Engines will be the better choice cause of more kicking ass from low engine speeds and more complete souveranity with weights...especially with 3.7 305HP TIVCT. So i made an comment on press conference against the german Ford Marketing Director Wolfgang Booms that it is in my opinion a quite big mistake not to launch any of the V6 engines (3.5 and 3.7 V6 TIVCT, 3.5 V6 EcoBoost) and further to resign of offering models in premium class (f.e. something similar to Taurus) and crossover classes above Ford Kuga in Europe. Kuga is quite small because of C-segmant-base (Focus) and bigger crossovers like Touareg, M-class, X5 are still sucessful enough in Europe, too. This class and premium would be able to confirm strong image in Europe...especially in Germany. Greets Marc
