  1. Why are you even posting on this thread ? You have adding nothing for the OP's question but your stupid opinion and non-topic issue. Some of us were not as fortunate as you to get a good one. The wife constantly reminds me of my bad decision to get the Edge when she wanted a Murano but I insisted on supporting Ford in their time of need so I can not get over it until she does. I wish I had looked here before buying as I would not even be here now. Keep on topic or go away.
  2. Also look under the thread here titled PTU question. Good luck, hope you get a good one if you go for it.
  3. Look under the maintenance / tsb section for 'burning smell' thread. I dumped my 08 Edge last February because of it and also noted it in my annual consumer reports survey and anyone I know that is looking to buy a Ford. The Edge was the worst new car I ever purchased. No 'new car smell' with that car. I feel bad for the guys that are stuck with this, I took about a $2500 loss on this and it will be the last Ford me or my family will purchase especially with all the issues with the F150's we have had. Yea I'm still a bit sour about it..
  4. I had an '89 Plymouth Voyager with a 2.5L Turbo and kept the middle and back seats out for work. The thing was so light that it used to be able to smoke my buddies 5.0 stang from 0-80.... Went through 3 transmissions with that little torq monster.
  5. sorry to hear about this guys, I traded mine in after 3 leaking PTU replacement attempts, the thing just plain old stunk.. Good luck and hope it gets fixed!
  6. why would you not run what your owners manual says ?
  7. I'll sell my xcal3 tuner for $150. I dumped the Edge, was sick of the stinking PTU leak smell and after 3rd seal I had enough. When I spoke to Steeda, one guy said he would throw in a tune if I bought the intake. I just sold my xcal2 to a guy on the F150 forum and may post this one as well if my bro don't want to tune his F250. Bought an 09 Ram and there won't be a tune for this available for at least 6 months or so and probably not SCT.
  8. Enough of this. Mine was leaking shortly after purchase, I mentioned at first oil change but only after joining this forum was able to narrow down the issue. Mine always had a coolant smell in the hot weather, ( and dealership couldn't find out why last summer ) and now the heat sucks this burning PTU fluid stink into the car in the cold weather. So much for the new car smell experience here. I only had the seals done, never a full PTU replacement but understand it is just the same PTU with this updated seal. All work done by the same master tech each time who when I talked to said these were good cars except for all the leaking PTU's and he has done many seal replacements since 07. I believe this is a Ford issue and not a tech installation issue and have no faith in Ford since this is now an issue going on 3 years. But they do not ALL leak so what's the deal here ?? And each time it is repaired, all the spilled fluid has to burn off the exhaust again. Really hate that smell... Anyway, after the cam phaser and drive train issues with my F150's and now this stinking smelling PTU issue, I am tired of this complete and total waste of time. So I took my losses and just dumped the Edge last weekend and purchased an 09 Dodge Ram. We have had a Grand Caravan since new, now with 150k+ miles with NO service issues. Hope to have better luck with this than by last 4 Ford purchases. Buddy has an 04 Ram and tows his boat with it. No issues either. Only I hope Dodge is still around in a few years ! Good bye Ford. And thanks guys, I figured out the issue due to your posts here. Good luck and all the best with this one. Kevin
  9. Sounds like whoever programmed it screwed up, or SCT's baseline stock PCM program was not matching your strategy hex code. I just flashed the Edge back to stock this morning. Less than 1.5 minutes to do this. ( good chance it is being trading in tomorrow so I am removing the bolt on's today ) I have tuned 3 different Ford vehicles now with no issues. Lucky in this area I guess, but I have seen a couple guys on the trucks forum get no starts or errors in the middle of the flash. A real PIA when this happens but thankfully, not toooo often. Sorry to hear this man. And I respectfully disagree on any realized performance gains using most of the bolt on's on these Edges, and I mean 'realized'... Your PCM is factory set for stock parts. Period. You need a knowledgable tuner to tap into various areas you are looking to modify. You will never realize the performance gains from an intake, exhaust and the "paper weight" mod. Edge already has the e-fans and have not seen an UD pulley or ignition system upgrade setup yet. Obviously, this is my opinion but is based on my experience with modding 4 Ford vehicles, 2004-2008 model years.
  10. I'm assuming you guys are obviously looking to boost performance here. Just curious as to why you would waste time and money with anything initially before getting a tuner. You will never feel the performance increase on an intake, throttle body spacer ( aka : paper weight ) or exhaust and the tuner is cheaper than exhaust and not much more than an intake. Also, it is the simpliest install, 5 minutes, while you sit in your drivers seat and watch the cool little display on the xcal3... You can also flash back to stock in less than the initial 5 minute flash and reload the tune in even less time ( since it does not need to save out your factory tune after the initial load ) and never gets your hands dirty. And you are missing the ear to ear grin when you stand on it and do a 0-100 mph sprint after you load the 93 octane max performance tune.. such a shame
  11. Drove the Edge to work today. Parked and open door and it stinks again. Going back to dealer next Thursday for 15k oil change and have this looked at again. I'm at two bad seals now. Also looked at Kelly Blue Book and trade in is only 22,900 on a fully loaded '08 limited. I haven't driven it for two weeks but was eager to dump it before but may ride it out for a bit longer since it is the wife car The trade in value is a bit depressing on new vehicle owned for only 8 months..
  12. Bad news on the "no fix" situation we appear to be in. My .02, ( cause I know that's all it may be worth to some of you guys ! ) just dump the car. I got x-plan with $1500 in rebates and financed it at 0% through Ford credit. Not upside down on trade in, at 14k now, so this car is gone as soon as weather breaks and a new car will not get pelted with cinders and salt. My last seal kit looks like it is leaking, you guys are now reporting the updated PTU with that updated seal already installed is also leaking so I'm not dealing with this for years. Mine has had a burning smell since shortly after purchase last May and I mentioned at the 5k oil change and all was reported as well. Thanks to this post, we got to the bottom of it. Kinda ruins the 'new car smell'.. Not a bad little car though, vista roof is awesome, the nav and sync are great, sets high standards for the next one, but definately not an AWD Ford until this mess is well past. The AWD setup is great on snow covered roads. Talked to other local Edge owners who said the FWD model sucks in the snow.
  13. Here are my two trips and what was done. The 1/30/09 below was supposed to be the latest seal kit as of this date. 12/9/08 : Miles 10,841 - PTU Seal Leak - Part # 7E5Z*7275*D Install seals and deflector, retest ok. 1/30/09 : Miles 13,328 - PTU Seal Leak - Part # 8T4Z*7275*A Kit
  14. Just picked up Edge tonight. Smells real bad, not sure if fluid is just burning off Y pipe. Finally got receipts from the two service trips. 12/9/08 : Miles 10,841 - PTU Seal Leak - Part # 7E5Z*7275*D Install seals and deflector, retest ok. 1/30/09 : Miles 13,328 - PTU Seal Leak - Part # 8T4Z*7275*A Kit It did not smell this bad on the 12/9 service trip when I picked it up. Probably will take it back tomorrow and have them check again, have a few errands to run tonight so will take the Edge and see if still dripping tomorrow.
  15. I like both trucks, always preferred Ford trucks, still really like 'em but Dodge did a great job on the 09 Ram. And I had an 04 F150 with vibration issues, they hung a vibration dampener off the rear left leaf spring, and only after 3 trip to the dealer with "engineering working on a fix" on the receipt. I ended up trading it in. Some of us have been through this with Ford before. Been having a hard time deciding, this issue was simply the deal breaker. And according to the TSB, this PTU issue is with Edge and Taurus X. Hopefully the Flex has the redesigned PTU when they update the TSB with 09 if applicable.
  16. Called this morning, no ETA on when the part(s) will arrive, ( they must be coming from China or something or shipped out to fix all you guys ! ) so the wife's Edge will continue to drip brown spots on the resealed driveway all weekend now. And after reading all these threads, geeze, some of you guys that have been dealing with this since 2007, I can see how this is getting real irratating. So Ford has helped me decide here, I'm getting an 09 Ram Sport, not the 09 F150 FX4 that I test drove last week. This issue made up my mind to 'go to the Dodge side' for the new truck..
  17. The F150 has a proven +7 rwhp gain by removing it. And yes, you are correct, it is on the side ( at the bottom facing the fender ). Mine just popped right off when I pushed down on it. Now the air box has a baseball size opening at the bottom versus one the size of a quarter. So, increased air velocity across the MAF sampling port at WOT causes the MAF to command more fuel. And I'm not worried about running it into the fender well, the stock snorkel is not and when you drive, the air is moving under the hood anyway. I have seen guys argue this back and forth about intake temp, cooler is better obviously, but that's why guys doing tuning and dyno pulls have these huge barrel fans in front of the vehicle when on the dyno, +12rwhp just by cooling the intake air. That's more a more realistic "driving condition". This personal observation is worth more than all the opinions I have seen. As far as why do it, every little bit helps when you are doing aftermarket mod's and this one is FREE ! Good idea about running a tube off the hole, just remove the snorkel, and no cutting ! That is basically the intake design at the top of the air box only this comes from behind the grill. and yes, you get the most WOT increase by doing the combo ( more air=more fuel=more power ) but I respectfully disagree, the power is not possible only because of the intake. Look at the entire picture, the tune increases throttle response as well as up's your timing to more match the octane level you are using. There are more benefits as well when you start looking into the details of the tuning parameters adjusted by each individual tuner. The 09 F150 has a 28rwhp increase over the stock tune just using 87 octane. I've seen a guy's 04 F150 XLT w/ 5.4L do a 220 rwhp pull stock, then pull 246 rwhp with an 87 octane tune. Then pulled a 256 rwhp by adding an AF1 intake. Talk to Fred at Evolution performance, he will ship you a 93 octane tune ( if you can get 93 in your area ) that kicks a$$ without any intake. The Ford vehicles seem to respond very well to tuning. My guess is they tune them so conservatively at the factory.
  18. Any CAI that gives noteworthy gains will require a tune. Here is some info from one of the reputable tuners on the ford truck forum. These guys are a wealth of knowledge and can really wake the 'slug' F150 truck up. " Now, one comment on the CAI/AFR thing... The reason a CAI will often cause a lean condition is because the shape and/or diameter of the metering or "sample" area of the intake tube is usually quite different from stock. This change will have a significant effect on the way the Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor calculates the airflow into the engine. The larger the intake tube, the lower the air velocity through the tube, and consequently through the sampling port of the MAF. This results in a lower output from the MAF which the computer interprets as less air mass entering the engine and in turn cause the computer to inject less fuel. You can guess the rest from here. Since removing the snorkel does not change the sampling area of the intake tube, there is no adverse effect on final AFR. " Hope this helps and clears up any questions as to why you need a tune with the Steeda style intake. The AirForce 1 intake available for the F150 comes in a 3" and 3.5" intake tube diameter. The 3" tube can be run without a tune and gives about a 10+ rwhp increase ( you will never feel this power increase ). I have the 3.5" tube and was custom tuned by Troyer Performance and causes a CEL when I flash back to stock. Best bet here if you want the most gains and already have an XCAL3, buy the intake and talk to Gus at Steeda, he will throw in a tune no charge. Or if you want the most gains and not spend the $700 for the Steeda package, buy the tuner from Evolution performance, get a K&N drop in and remove the snorkel at the bottom of the airbox ( about $440 ). This is our current setup on the wife's Edge. The little Edge hauls a$$ on the 93 octane performance tune. Never been back to stock since. The tuner is the only 'seat of the pants gain' you will notice for the $$ spent. Why throw $300 into an intake ( there all about that price anyway ) when you can spend $399 and get the tuner, not risk running lean and 100x the performance. Now, back to my PTU leak...
  19. More info, found I had the 'new' seal done at 10k, since the replacement PTU's were also leaking. Now Ford apparently has a kit, that I believe includes PTU, PTU gasket, and a reflector shield ( at least there will be no more burning smell or fire hazard if it leaks again ). Saw the TSB with a few part numbers. Will post back when I get more information, ( and exact part numbers ) hopefully it does contain this 'redesigned' PTU, or maybe I don't get this until the 3rd attempt like you guys are saying and it is just more seals and a reflector.. Dealer will call tomorrow with an ETA on when they can get the kit.
  20. They are ordering some 'kit' that has a new seal and a reflector to keep the fluid off the exhaust Y-pipe. Found another thread in the Maintenance, TSB's and Recall section ( titled 'burning smell' ), seems guys have been dealing with this for 1 year now and are reporting even this latest seal is junk and not working so the reflector will at least keep the vehicle from catching fire when the 'new' design seal leaks again. Someone also mentioned a new PTU design, I guess that will be my #3 attempt, maybe that's what you'll get this time. If you can, post back with part number from service invoice, will do the same here.. good luck
  21. At 12k now, seal replaced last time, but is now leaking again and burning smell is back. The 'new' part is on back order. Hopefully it will work this time, whenever the part is available. Leak is not that bad that I cannot drive it till then, I hope..
  22. Have an 08 with AWD, 5/08 build date. Averages 17 MPG, that is mixed back roads and highway. Not much better than my F150 with 15.5 MPG.
  23. Wife has an 08 Limited AWD, 5/08 build date. Had burning smell and ended up with a PTU seal replaced at 10k oil change. At 12k now and took it back this morning for continued burning smell, even through the heater you smell it. Leaking again. I am now waiting for a 'new designed' seal that is apparently on back order.
  24. Sounds more like your powersteering. Check the fluid. When you turn the wheel, does it change pitch ?
