8 Month Old Ford Edge Sport Paint Bubbling - Do We Need to Sue Ford ?

I am a 2012 Ford Explorer owner but my sister purhased a 2011 Ford Edge brand new 8 months ago in Tuxedo black. She purchased the extended warranty that included paint coverage, she purchased the rust and paint protection package too. Very low mileage on the truck thus far. We are located in London, Ontario, Canada.

 

In recent weeks she has had major paint bubbling occurring , mainly on one side and the hood, but it could spread to any part of the vehicle for all we know. Where the paint has blistered you can see a whitish primer underneath, the spots stick out like sore thumgs, maybe a dozen spots so far. It seems like new spots starting every day now. I try to help her out as much as possible with her being a single mom and all. We took the truck into our dealer last week and the first thing the body shop manager said to us was that it looked like bad paint adhesion. He found a bubbled area while he was looking at it and the paint blistered in his hand and a new area opened up. They took pictures and sent it off to Ford in Toronto, Ontario. They came back and gave a number of excuses to deny warranty coverage, simply by looking at poor quality pictures. Thay said it was caused by exterior environmental damage, they sait it could be stone chips, they said that the truck wasn't washed frequently, They failed to blame it on a full moon though, about the only excuse they didn't use.

 

We are going to schedule a meeting with the owner of our dealership this week to see what our next steps will be. At this point we are prepared to sue Ford of Canada, no skin off our back after spending $48k on a new truck and they won't honour any warranty coverage within the first year and well within any mileage limits. Their attituded and treatment thus far has been disgusting. We are long time Ford customers, and we have nothing against our dealership on this, it is all Ford's problem and Ford's poor customer service.

 

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Very disappointed at this time. Thanks for reading.

Way back in 1993, I had a Taurus SHO (black), that 2 months old, the paint started to blister all over the car. Went to the dealer, they sent it out to a body shop they use, and the place had the car for 3 weeks. Paint was stripped down chemically washed, reprimed, and a pain t job done that was superior to the original that was on the car. If your sisters dealer doesn't cooperate, try contacting a zone manager, if you have them in Canada, and have the car inspected.

Thanks for the replies on this, very sorry that our first post here has to do with this stuff as we have enjoyed the vehicle a lot up to this point in time.

 

The dealership is Oakridge Ford in London, we don't have any complaints with them on this. We are not sure who will do the repairs at this point. We have a meeting this week with the dealer, right now the area Ford rep. isn't around and they don't know if anyone will be down in our area in the next while. Right now they are doing everything through pictures being sent to Ford's offices in Toronto. We will take it further from here. I agree that the paint will have to be stripped as this could potentially happen everywhere on the vehicle, the plastic bumpers don't seem to be affected though.

Well my sister took the truck to two independant body shops and both of them said it was a paint adhesion issue and there is a new spot developing on the roof. Including the Ford dealer's body shop we have 3 parties pointing to an adhesion problem.

 

This is going to get interesting as my sister was also sold paint protection coverage by the dealership which covers environmental causes/problems. I can almost guarantee that the paint protection company is going to cry paint adhesion issues, and Ford of Canada is going to cry environmental damage. One of those parties is going to get the fight of their life if they don't uphold their warranty, that's about all I can say at this point.

I wouldn't anticipate any issues from Ford if you have 3 body shops saying it's an adhesion issue. The only time I've seen where this becomes an issue is if the dealer tells Ford they think it's not a warrantied problem - regardless of what they tell you or what they say they've told Ford. The dealer's input to Ford is critical but given the body shop diagnosis I don't think you'll have a problem.

I'm curious how you are making out with this issue. Has it been resolved? I ask because we have a brand new Ford truck and the tailgate has bubbled and cracked like you wouldn't believe. It's an eyesore. We've had it for a few months. I brought it in because the A/C quit working and told them to take pictures of the tailgate while it was there. Well, I picked it up only to be told that I need a new condensor for A/C because there was damage from "road debris" and warranty doesn't cover damage from road debris (go figure!). They also told me that my paint won't be covered either because it must have been "something I washed it with". They said they took pictures and sent them to head office and they said no way. Funny thing is, the tailgate wasn't washed since it sat at the dealer for 3 days. I brought it in a bit dirty, and picked it up exactly the same. Not sure how they would see the paint problem without washing it first. I'm extremely annoyed and have emailed Ford Canada and reminded them of the class action lawsuit against Honda concerning the EXACT problem with the condensors. Honda lost, and is now paying Honda owners back in excess of $40,000,000 total for the repairs that came out of their own pockets. So...I'm finding as many people with paint and condensor problems as I possibly can. I refuse to pay over $5000 in repairs on a vehicle I just paid over $50,000 for!!!!! I love my truck, but Ford is blind if they think they are going to walk away from everything I've been reading about their paint problems.

I had a 2011 Ford Fusion Tuxedo Black and also had bubbles on hood and passenger side. Took it to Ford service dept. they also said rock chips. Took the Fusion to a professional paint guy he said; Ford didn't sand car before painting the reason it was flacking off. I now own the 2012 Ford Edge SEL Tuxedo Black, (love that color) :headspin: very afraid I may suffer the same problem on this vehical. :soapbox: I will have to wait and see how the paint issues unfold on the Edge have only been 2 months in the new ride. :bike:
