  1. Are you talking about a single isolated "jolt" or a repetitive event? My 08 SEL FWD will "slam shift" every once in a while when it shifts into or out of second after sitting for a long time. Usually when its really cold over night. You hear an over rev. and then it slams in to gear and the whole car shudders and jumps. Think back to learning to drive an standard and dropping the clutch. Without a code light coming on it will be hard to repeat what you are encountering. Look for a pattern and write down the details each time it happens. If its first thing after being driven then you will need to leave it at the dealer with instructions to take it out first thing in the morning etc... Good luck
  2. Meadowvale Ford (Erin Mills/Brittania in Mississauga) was okay but it was a fleet buy. Very friendly, car was ready when promissed etc.. Not to good on the dealer prep (didn't figure out where the little rubber pads in the center console were supposed to go, floor mats sitting in the back etc..) but what do you expect when they make nothing on a fleet vehicle. When I was looking at colours for my order Erin Mills Ford was very helpful and spent time with me even though they don't do fleet and knew they would not be handling my business. Depends on who you luck out and get when you walk in the door. (next "up" in dealer speak). X plan sounds like the way to go if you want a Ford. The mazda is the same vehicle so if they are willing to deal and the wife likes it....!
  3. Maybe I'm missing something on the cost side. Does that total include towing, storage etc.... I went to Tirerack.com and rims for an 08 SEL (17's) run 100-350 per corner and high performance rubber goes for 100-175 per tire. Where is the rest coming from ? Bottom line is it really sucks to have had this problem and wheel locks are now on my shopping list. Just to make you feel better I just saw a BMW 5 series in an apartment parking lot really early in the morning sitting up on stacks/bundles of todays news paper. must have just dropped the papers at a local store and the thieves picked them up on the way to complete the pit stop on bimmer ! Hate to see what that will cost if an edge cost 4000.00
  4. I haven't driven a ford for 20 years based on bad experiences with both the cars and dealer network. I am extremely happy with both after getting a 2008 Edge and have said so to numerous friends. As far as sync goes, I really don't see the great benefit. The blue tooth connectivity is fine but there are all kinds of options to get that. The MP3 connectivity doesn't work with my particular player but I have put zero effort in to figuring out why it doesn't work. I listen to talk radio or my CD's Kudo's to Ford
  5. Get snow tires for this thing. My original all seasons could not even handle 1-2 inches of snow and that is with 1000 km on them! I don't have the AWD model but I would definitely put snows on either version. Blizzaks handle fantastic and are not that noisy. I don't have any feel for how they will stand up tread life wise but I can tell you I won't drive this thing in the winter with out snows. Love the Edge and have avoided Fords for 15+ years prior to getting this car.
  6. Now that you mention it... theres a glowing object falling towards me........ I kept part of the brake drum as a paperweight for my office and yes I am really thankful it didn't bounce higher and come through the windshield. We just had an incident on the highway last week where some idiot left a regular claw hammer in the back of his pick up truck and it flew out and imbedded itself right in the middle of a windshield. Went 3/4 through and then stopped. I believe side windows are not laminated like the windshield and anything that hits them is likely to come right through ! As far as the parking lot goes, you can bet if I hadn't been sitting in the car no one would have been parked beside me when I came out to find the damage !
  7. I have seen several references about avoiding getting a "red" edge. No idea what the deal is/was as to me it was just another color to choose from. I am now having second thoughts. My Edge is apparently cursed and an accident magnet. 1000 kilometers from new. Transport truck throws a brake drum/shoe while beside me on the highway. Part of it punches through my front passenger door. 2500.00 later (no the truck didn't stop and I didn't catch a name) I have a brand new front passenger door. 6000 kilometers. Parked properly in a marked parking spot at the local business depot. Sitting in the car with the keys on the seat and sorting some photo copying when the car suddenly rocks side to side. The nice driver that just pulled in to the wide open parking spot beside me swung it wide and hit me just in front of the driver side rear wheel. "oh, did I just hit you? I thought I just ran over a lump of ice!" One more hit and I will take my edge for an exorcism !
  8. Okay, does anyone out there have a Palm Treo (hopefully a 700 model) and know how to take a call from call waiting. I went through the Sync manual and its not covered. I have tried answering the call on the sync screen and on the treo screen but no joy. What I do now is look at the number to see if its a customer, tell the person I am talking to I've got to go and hang up on the initial conversation. The new call will then ring again and I pick it up. What I would really like to be able to do is toggle between calls as I normally do when using the Treo outside of the Edge. Five other people in the company are experiencing the same thing. I don't know if we are all "challenged" or just can't be bothered to figure it out. Any help will be appreciated.
  9. Did you get the heavy duty floor mats or the floor liners ? My edge has the stock front and rear rubber mats and to be honest I thought they were pretty good. I have weather tech mats (not liners) in my Honda van and the cargo liner in the back. Love the cargo liner but it takes up a lot of space in the garage when I need to put the third row up for extra passengers. It was worth the money when the lawn mower leaked oil all over the back of the van. I would definitely pop for weather techs for the edge if it wasn't a company car and I don't think I am going to buy it in two years when it is time to replace it.
  10. Bummer and sure doesn't give you a warm fuzzy feeling about the car. Hopefully this is an isolated incident for you. What did they give you for a loaner? I hope it was something decent. Glad to see the salesrep is getting involved to try and make things as smooth as possible. Hopefully he realizes any chance of repeat business is riding on how they handle this problem. One of my coworkers had his heated seat die on him two days after delivery. He hasn't taken it in yet and will likely wait until he takes it for the scheduled service. He is less than impressed but these things can happen to even the best vehicle. Good luck with the repairs.
  11. The service advisors answer may be partially correct (often encounter it if snow gets caught up in the back of the rim) but it is a cop out. Get the salesman who sold you the car to come listen to the service advisors "explanation" and then say you believe they are improperly balanced. Perhaps he will step up to the plate for you. Ideally if you are in having it serviced anyway and they are due to rotate the tires they should do this once for you at no charge. The expense is minimal since the car will be up on the hoist and the wheels off any way. Otherwise find a good tire shop and let the dealer know why you are not giving them your business when they invited you for your next "scheduled" service.
  12. Duckdog, you don't say where you are but if you are in the snow belt I would look at getting snow tires. See if they can be worked in to the deal at a reduced cost as extras. The handling in snow with the fwd model and all seasons is horrible. I put a set of Blizzaks on an the difference was night and day. I have had my Edge 2 months now and put about 7000 km on it and have absolutely no complaints other than it seems to be a bit of a fuel pig. If I drive over the posted 100 kph limit the gas mileage drops significantly. The car is a company one but based on my experiences to date, I would buy one with no reservations with my own money.
  13. Thanks Lex, I'm going to link your post to one of our corporate support people who is fielding the calls. We have replaced most of our 650's with various versions of the 700 To answer an earlier question, yes our Treos are windows based. That was done apparently to align it with all our other systems for a "seamless" integration. My 700 was paired up until this afternoon when it suddenly stopped. Took me half an hour to get it paired up again (just kept trying until it gave up and let me win!). Has anyone figured out how to take a call waiting call on the treo/sync combo. Normally on the treo you just answer the second call and use the swap screen. I have no success figuring out how to do it when I am connected to sync. Yes I have gone through the guide book looking for the solution. I just ignore the second call and check my voicemail or view the number on the treo after the fact. I really like the integrated blue tooth feature and have dropped all my ear peice connections. I don't even use the blue tooth headsets now. Its either the car or hold it to my head like a regular phone. Now if I can find a home office cordless phone that uses bluetooth connections I am in business !
  14. My point is a personal one. If I worked for Ford I would buy what I build. If I don't support my company who the heck will? Related to that I know I would take a serious amount of abuse from my coworkers if I used one of my competitors products and showed it to them every day. Some of my coworkers in another division call on Ford / GM / Chrysler. They are told their company car MUST be from the specific automaker that they call on. We don't supply to Honda/Toyota (strange but all their long term supply agreements are with firms either based in Japan or subsidaries of their Japanese suppliers) and guess whos vehicles are not on our fleet list?
  15. I drove by the Canadian production plant this afternoon at 2:30 and found it interesting to see what was sitting in the plant parking lot and the Canadian headquarters (salary) parking lot. The actual plant lot seemed to be full of big three (Ford/Chrysler/GM) with lots of pick up trucks. Surprisingly there were a lot of Dodge pick ups based on a casual glance. I did not see any Edge or MKX but this was just a quick look while driving by. The "head office" next door had a few MKX or Edge and a mix of almost all other makes. I did notice the higher end Accura/Lexus stuff. Its a free country and no one can tell their employees what to drive but it still made me wonder. With employee pricing, X plan and just plain old loyalty to your job (spend your money where you earn it). Notice I didn't say loyalty to your company as its pretty obvious that companies will do whats viewed as "right" for their bottom line and the employees are out of luck. I am sure I would likely see something similar up in Brampton or out in Oshawa. With Honda, BMW, Toyota etc all having North American based plants is this type of observation even valid any more?
  16. I hear what you are saying regarding Honda. My overall impression when sitting in our Honda (2004) and the Edge is they seem to be about the same. Mechanically its to soon to compare them. The panel alignments seem a little looser on the Edge but still good. The sales experience at Honda has definitely gone down hill from my personal perspective. Staff, pricing options, add on pressure etc. are all now similar to any other dealer. They are owned by locals, staffed by locals and now seem to have the "local" attitude and standards (or lack there of).
  17. Welcome to the forum. What did you buy (model/colour) and how was the purchasing experience versus your Hondas/Acuras?
  18. You didn't say (or I didn't notice) if you were going leather or cloth. I have black cloth and it looks fine but the interior could use a splash of colour to break it up. I guess thats what the passengers are for! My only comment is that with little kids the seat backs really show the dirt from their feet. I put the booster seats in for my two kids and they really made a mess. Scotch guard is advisable if you have small children. Good luck with the hunt.
  19. I guess the Ford designers didn't expect people to want to use this feature at night to allow moon light in to the car. Apparently they are all sun worshippers and not "romantics".
  20. As is discussed in other postings this is a problem with the phone software and/or sync. With every phone manufacturer "doing their own thing" and seemingly changing things with each and every new phone you are seeing compatability problems. Do a google search about sync and the palm treo's and see all the fun and games with that phone. Palm is rumoured to have had software fixes for many of the issues but for some reason has not released them. Have a look at your phone right after the Navi screen shows "called ended". Is your phone screen still showing the call to be active? I have this type of problem a couple of times every day and it bugs the heck out of those I call. They receive my call and then can't hear anything as the phone is active but the sync microphone is not working. I just select the manual disconnect on the phones screen and use it "hands on".
  21. Shouldn't and don't are the two key words for this discussion. I have seen condensation and water inside various taillights over the years. And yes I mean inside. A coworker had a Trailblazer (ok- its a GM) that had at least 1-2 inches in the rear taillight housing. There was no obvious sign of damage or cracking so it had to be channeling down and in to the housing from run off. My wifes old Grand Prix had water in the head light housing. The trick there was even though they looked like one piece units there were actually two pieces and you could get hairline cracks that allowed moisture to get in. I will take a look at my 08 SEL when I run it through the car wash tomorrow. (hey at - 15 I am not hand washing this thing)
  22. This very subtle noise has been on my 08 2WD since the get go. Really notice it when pulling out of the driveway first thing in the morning if there is no radio/fan/etc.. turned on. Very common in a lot of vehicles. My Pontiac did it and so does our Honda. The fact that the dealer can't recreate it doesn't surprise me. You take it in and the drive over cleans off the disc so they can't recreate it.
  23. Well, isnt' this a nice thread ! I am also a member at the Odyclub for our minivan and there is a lot less flaming and actually more member supplied technical assistance, pricing information for every region of north america etc.. I really appreciate the "how to" postings there that even include full step by step instructions with detailed photos etc... Good advice on TSB's and warranty items also. Hopefully this forum will "grow" in to a similar tool. To each their own but to me it doesn't matter if someone owns, is buying or is only browsing. If there is something positive to post then who cares where it comes from?
  24. they are in the sync manual or you can go to the syncmyride web site and print off a quick list and watch a how to video on using sync.
  25. Glad you liked it and now you can use the certificate at the parts counter to buy a bug deflector or rear cargo tray for your new Edge ! I assume it was a ford certificate versus one from a retailer right ? Several posts question the top end (power?) on the Edge which seems to be limited by either a govenor or aerodynamics (or both!). Its got enough get up and go for me and if you like putting your foot down you better have the wallet to support its drinking habit. Welcome to the club and have fun picking the colour and options.
