  1. Ar there matey, there be pirates driving that crossover thingy behind us ! The edge looks nice and clean and polished !
  2. 2008 SEL with auto temp controls = filter as posted
  3. Can't give you specific instructions but if they can put it in during assembly you should be able to take it out. Before you get out the tools another question you might ask is are there "latch" fastening points for a car seat in the center position? I know there are latch points in the outer rear seats from when we had two seats installed but I never checked for the center only. Also I don't recall where the top tether strap secures to behind the rear seats. Guess you will have to get out the manual. The other thing you are going to find out is that when they go to a booster seat the rear seat belt buckle/latches are not extended out far enough for kids to easily insert the latch by themselves. Save yourself time by helping them buckle up before you close their door and then get in the front. I can't describe the number of times we have sat there waiting for the "click" only to have to hop out again to buckle them up right or double check. It is one of the minor complaints we have with our 2008 SEL.
  4. I forgot to add to the post that the local Part Source (aka Canadian Tire) does not have generic filters (yet!) so I had to go to the dealership and pay 28.00 plus tax. Came to just over 31.00 for the part, if you can call it that. The two minute estimate is extremely accurate. I didn't even have to release the "string" noted in the other posts. This is definitely a do it yourself item for even the most mechanically challenged owner. If it wasn't a company vehicle I would have ordered one on amazon.com like one of the other members. As it is I figure I saved the company 20 bucks by doing it myself. I know its a "specialty item" but it seems like a rip off when you can buy a micro allergen furnace filter measuring 15x26x1" for less than half the price of the Ford cabin filter. Thank god they didn't call it a "heppa" filter or they would have tripled the price
  5. Popped open the cabin air filter compartment on my 2008 SEL. Based on the postings it took me less than a minute. Attached are photos of the filter which I am sure is the factory original since I haven't had it serviced. Given a car almost 1.5 years old the filter isn't really that bad but I am going to go buy a new one today. Here are a couple of shots
  6. But a huge blue oval would look great hanging around some tough 15 year old from the suburbs neck! Wouldn't it ????
  7. I would bet the logo is held in place by a system of one way clips. Pins in the back of the logo slide in to holes which have angled metal flanges that tighten up when the pin tries to back out (like a slip knot). Some of these work on smooth pins, others call for a pin with small ridges that function like the teeth on a set of handcuffs. This type of set up would greatly speed assembly of the parts. The other option is they use an adhesive. (contact cement or urethane). I'm surprised no one has had an emblem "removed" by vandals and gotten a look at the backing for the logo.
  8. I like forums like this for general ideas that can be suggested to the mechanic. In this case its a company car and they do not like us taking it to the dealer unless its a warranty issue. With 47,000 km and over a year old there is not likely to be any warranty issue so I have been dealing with an independent brake shop who seem to be reasonable. The first time they looked at it was when I swapped the snow tires they checked the backing plates (per one posting here), the emergency brake and pad wear. No charge since it was up on the hoist any way. As noted, the mechanic said he "thinks" it may be the ridging at the outer edge of the pads. I will let him do the "vodoo that he do" and see what happens. I am surprised this has not come up with other owners as my use of the Edge is 100% typical.
  9. Call a car glass place first to find out what the "cash" price versus insurance company paid price is to replace it. Make sure its a reputable installer as the windshield is in fact part of the structure of your car and plays a part in accident injury reduction. Depending on your insurance policy there may be a large deductible on the windshield, there may be a first one has no impact on your rates clause etc... Read your policy and figure out what you may/may not be out of pocket if you claim or don't claim. Once you call the agent they note the call on file so know what you are likely to do PRIOR to calling them. In Canada I would expect the front glass to go for 800 - 1000 installed based on an experience a few years ago. Good luck
  10. Did it the other night on a nice long stretch of highway with no one behind me. Took it up to 140 kph and then jumped on the brakes hard. Repeated a couple of times but no joy. I was surpised by the distance to stop which seemed to be very long. It might be pad contamination but the problem is only getting worse. I am taking it back in on Monday. Even if they have to turn the rotors just a bit something has got to get done. I drove 4 hours at highway speed yesterday with the squeal (at least two wheels judging by the two different audible tones) almost the entire time. Its so noisy now that I can't tell which wheels are squealing. Even if they have to turn the rotors, which seems drastic for only 47,000 km, I just want to have the noise stop ! Thanks for the suggestion
  11. Took the Edge in TWICE since it was not convenient to leave it overnight so they can try to open it when its cold. They could not recreate the problem when it was in the shop (hey, its warm in there). Bottom line is they said they won't change out the lock actuator without recreating the problem. Just had another cold spell and the lock is sounding like a machine gun. I am going to wait it out until the nice weather hits and then see what happens. I get the feeling the tech didn't even try to look for any service bulletins on a 2008 with door lock problems This and a new brake squeal problem are starting to change my opinion about Fords back to what it used to be (not good !). I want to give Ford the benefit of the doubt especially how they have been handling this whole bail out mess but past experience has caused me to be even more critical of Ford products. Not really fair but its my reality.
  12. My 2008 SEL has developed an annoying squeal out of two of the brakes. It shows up once the car has been driven for a few minutes, especially at highway speed. I took it in to the shop today and they said the pads are 50-60% left (only 46,000 km) and the backing plate is fine (noted in another post) and everything else looks good. The technician pointed out a slight ridge at the inner and outer edge of the disc surface where the brake pad stops. He is speculating that the rotor heats up and the ridge is rubbing against the edge of the pads causing the squeal. His recommendation was to grind off the ridge and bevel the edge of the pad. He also recommended to go to an after market pad once it is time to do the brakes. A friend with the exact same Edge has the same squeal but the mechanic he took it to just said " we can't see anything and you have lots of life left on your pads". Has anyone else run in to this problem with their Edge ?
  13. I have the problem on my 09 SEL. Passenger front door cycles open/closed or does it multiple times in succession. Only notice it during cold weather. There is a similar thread about this problem with Honda Vans. Blame is being put on cheap/faulty door lock actuators. What was the service bulleting number? Also, what the heck does drilling out a hole do to correct this problem ? Can't visualize a link between the issue and drilling.
  14. Do a search under a key word of snow or tires. Lots of various postings. I put Blizzaks on my 08 FWD and love the tires. I am located in the Toronto Canada area and used them last winter in several snow and ice storms. They made a HUGE difference in the handling. I would not have driven the car without them. Tires seemed quiet enough (didn't notice any difference from the OEM all seasons) but I put them on at the first snow and took them off fairly early in the spring. I can't comment on the wear resistance but I will definitely look at Blizzaks for my other vehicle based on their performance YTD.
  15. Based on the "full" status it almost sounds like the baffles in the tank are only installed up to a certain height. When its full there is fluid above this level and it "sloshes" around since it is not restrained by the baffles. Bet there was a bunch of off spec tanks used in a production run. Doubt Ford would ever admit it but how would they know at the assembly plant as the suppliers would be delivering sealed units. Testing at the plant would not catch it as the tank is never "filled" at the plant and the testing is on a dynomometer type device and would not provide the body movement you indicated causes this noise. I see a service call and a new tank being installed in your near future ! Glad to hear the service manager is going to be backing you up on this one.
  16. So its not some James Bond option ? If it hasn't done it again it might have been just a "breaking in" thing but given the age and mileage I doubt it. I would absolutely make sure the next time you take it in for service do the following. 1) try and make it during cold weather. If the engine gets really cold this might help recreate a bad seal 2) leave the vehicle overnight at the dealer prior to service 3) make sure the exact problem is noted on the work order in the words YOU want to describe it. Request that a mechanic inspect the car when it is first started as this is likely the time any noticeable smoke will be seen. If a car jockey fires it up and moves it in to the bay your chance of recreating the problem is likely zero. I have not had any problems and none of the coworkers have had any issues like this so it hopefully is just a one time thing for you. Get it noted in case you have problems down the road. If its not on paper, it never happened. (Note, I know several people that had Taurus engines fail and Ford stonewalled them in spite of a published recall and tech bulletin. My sister in law took them to small claims court and won full costs for the tow/rental/engine rebuild etc...)
  17. Welcome to the club. I have had my 08 almost a year and have had zero problems. I will be intereseted to hear your comments on winter driving. It depends where you are but some people say the all seasons + AWD provide great handling in the snow. My FWD absolutely sucked in the snow and I live in the Toronto area which is hardly a snow belt. Look in to snow tires if I were you.
  18. Ditto Lex's comments. The Ford cargo cover is a piece of junk. Buy a blanket to toss over the stuff in the back and save the money.
  19. Very common topic on the Ody forum I belong to. Numerous people have bought Hondas in the USA and brought them back. No duties just taxes and you have to make sure its on the list of cars you can import. (www.odyclub.com). There is a fee to register the car in Canada but believe it is not very much. The only sure difference is Honda Canada WILL NOT honour any warranty claim for a car purchased by a Canadian and brought back to Canada. I believe this only applys to new cars, not used. Most people that have done it said it was very easy and the money they saved will more than compensate them if they have to pay out of pocket for a major item (Transmissions are the big ticket hit). For a fully loaded ODY the spread was something like 10,000.00 cdn in the driveway for the exact same van. A tranny will go for 3-4000. You can also buy a third party CANADIAN warranty from various companies in place of a Honda warranty. This could be a problem as some of the firms have bad reputations in that business.
  20. My co-worker also has an Edge. He ended up with condensation in the rear tail light assemblies to the point that the silver reflector was "corroding" from the moisture. Ford replaced both rear tail light assemblies under warranty. The car was 6 months old. Sometimes you get a bad seal on the units. A friend had a GM product that you could have raised gold fish in the tail light. Absolutely full of water and it kept blowing fuses/bulbs (no surprise).
  21. It is unfortunate but the Edge is not child seat friendly in any fashion. The recessed seat belts make it hard/awkward for children in booster seats to fasten their seat belts (some adults have a hard time finding the latch also). That said, our two kids have been riding in the Edge since we got it with no problems. Yes, the middle of the car is the optimum place for a single car seat but I have yet to hear of a fatality in an Edge due to the location of a child car seat. The vast majority of accidents happen in the front/rear zones so the odds are in your childs favour any where in the back seat. The spacer is a fine idea but with two small children, it isn't an issue for us.
  22. I also participate in the Ody Van forum and the Zaino product gets huge raves and anyone that has used it seems to be converted for life. I haven't tried it yet, just use clay bar and McGuires 3 step products. I haven't tried the bumper black product but might give it a go. I used to swear by armorall but have been turned off on it lately.
  23. Welcome and the new ride looks sharp. It should not be a problem to get the blackberry to pair up with the sync. Just be thankful you don't have a Palm Treo, they are a ton of fun to pair up. Door dings are unfortunate but all to common. One thing to watch out for when you have someone in the back is park in to the wind. The height and shape of the rear door is just right for getting caught by a strong wind when they are opened and it will nail the car beside you if it gets blown out of the passengers hand. Of course the door doesn't line up with other cars side moldings so you can really put a ding in the other vehicle. I found out the hard way with my kids on day. The other driver told me not to worry about it as his car was already beat up and he didn't care (thank you !). Live and learn. Enjoy the new Edge
  24. Glad to hear you are up and running. Its these minor (major?) issues that cause companies to severly hurt their reputations. Is it Ford or Sync ? I don't really care as it is a Ford vehicle I bought so its a Ford problem to me. Yes I know this is "technology" and things have bugs but if it I have to deal with it every time I get in the car a little irritant becomes a major pain after a while. Think about good old Microsoft and Vista. Wonder how many people moved to Mac's or something else and now consider MS to be a producer of unreliable, inflexible products? There, I feel much better now.
  25. Good luck at the dealer and let us know how it goes. A couple of questions. What type of phone are you trying to pair specifically ? How old is the phone? Did you confirm check on the list of confirmed phones at syncmyride web site that your model is tested ? (Note- phones not listed may/will pair up) I had a really tough time getting my Treo 700 P to pair up but a couple of things. 1) go in and remove the pairing from both the phone and the sync system so you can start clean 2) You need to be patient during the process. There are a couple of points where is may take 5 minutes or more to complete the step. wait for the prompts. 3) I had to try 3-4 times even when I got to the point where it was giving me the connection code. Frustrating and it should not be that hard but once it is done the feature is a must have.
