  1. I had chrome clad rims on another car. If you don't keep them clean and live in a high salt use area (assuming you leave them on in the winter!) then you will likely begin to see problems 2-3 years down the road. In my case the chrome "behind" the spokes started coming off. Automated car washes dont really get the whole wheel clean. No problem as it was a leased vehicle but I would have been ticked if it was a purchased long term keeper. Clean it often and properly and you wont have any problems. As for the blue oval, they can be removed and replaced fairly easily. The various manufacturers up here make good money replacing the badges that get pried off by the local delinquints. You can buy them at the parts counter. Some mercedes owners have given up replacing the badges.
  2. thanks, didn't know you can get one to the point your name is on the factory paperwork. Everything I have ever bought is off the lot or a company car. As you say, personal preference. The comment about dealer badging is a hot button with me. Took delivery and had the plate surround off the van 10 minutes after that. One of my coworkers picked his Edge up (small town dealer) and got the worst scenario. Plate surround AND a huge dealer sticker on the rear door. I would have freaked and had them pull that off before I signed one piece of paperwork. I understand why the do it. Ultra low cost and really effective advertising. All your neighbours see the car and where you got it. My problems are it looks tacky and I am not being paid to advertise their dealership thank you very much. If I wanted to use my car to advertise a business I would let one of those firms who put the huge car sized peel and stick ads on cars and pay their owners 400-500 per month for the priviledge to do it (I would really need the money for this to happen).
  3. I am assuming you can instruct the dealer that you will only accept a factory build but two questions pop to mind. - If one is sitting on a local lot with exactly what you want and NO test drive miles on it, why not take it? - How would you know if they pulled it from a area dealers stock other than having it show up in under 3-4 weeks? If they have what you want or can get it sooner thats all good isn't it? Discounting variables including where you live relative to the Oakville Ontario plant 6-8 weeks would be realistic for an order built unit. Mine showed up in 4 weeks but that was likely the absolute low end you wil ever see for a order built unit. RED SEL with cloth (black) back up sensor/navi/6 disc CD and standard wheels.
  4. At a $1.05 a litre Cdn (no idea what you are paying for a US gallon) and only going to go up are you sure its worth letting it idle for even 10 minutes. Scrape the windows, jump in, hit the seat warmer and defrost and go !
  5. Our local Honda dealer has an inhouse "rental" desk that is independent but obviously tied to the dealership. It only has Honda's which are "loaners" or low cost "rentals" depending on what you are having done. Took our van in for some brake work and they put me in a no charge civic. Small but would definitely come back and look at one if/when it is time to downsize. The one gripe I have is that they don't put you in a "similar" vehicle (ex: van for a van) but given the number of cars they work on that would not be feasible. The dealership also does a great job on the shuttle. All current year and top of the line models with all the bells and whistles. My one trip in the shuttle van had me seriously wondering if it wasn't time to trade in for a new model. All those nice new toys and the smell of fresh leather seating.... Ford (or more correctly its dealer network) could learn a few things from Honda/Toyota etc.. No one has a patent on these good ideas or practices !
  6. Based on our corporate experience with the Treo phones (we likely have hundreds in North America) and the problems with them Lex's last post doesn't surprise me. Several of my coworkers are on their 3'rd or 4'th Treo due to various fatal errors, speaker breakdowns etc.. Our tech support spends more time on Treo support than all other issues (laptops, work stations, printers etc..) We are now looking at converting everyone over to Blackberrys based on all our problems. Palm is compounding the issue by replacing defective units with "remanufactured ones" that seem to come with problems already built in to them. Palm is one company that I would not be buying stock in right now. My Treo (700P) is paired up fine other than the intermitent "call ended" problem which is noted in various forums. I just put up with it and move on. Maybe the next phone/pda will work better and in the mean time I will keep an eye out for any Treo patches
  7. Edgy Girl, the work on your rear bumper cost 1600 Cdn? that seems a little steep but the back up sensors might be skewing the price a bit. Our Honda van was between 850 & 1000 out the door for the whole rear bumper cover (remove/paint new OEM part to match/reinstall). Japanese cars are not noted for their cheap replacement parts so your 1600 seems high.
  8. Park it at the body shop and get a rental as bbf2530 suggests. Tell your insurance agent you thought it was drivable but now don't feel comfortable driving it in the damaged condition and do not want to cause secondary damage. They should have you in a rental with no questions asked. I don't know about auto policies but with home policies if you do not take steps to mitigate your damages some firms will hold you to the letter of the policy and not cover any "secondary" damage caused by your inaction. An extreme (unrealistic) example would be having a pipe burst and not shutting off the water to the house. Glad to hear no one was hurt and good thing you didn't get pushed in to the vehicle ahead of you and have the air bags go off. Two front airbags, dash covers and front bumper and sensors get really expensive, really fast. I thiink you may be shocked by the bill for the rear end damage even without suspension damage. Rear bumper covers go for about a 1000.00 installed up here and thats just the plastic. Whats under the plastic can get expensive. I am also surprised its driveable if your exhaust system got permanently pushed out of place. If it is broken underneath the car then that is a reason to not drive it right there. On a car that new you might want to insist on all new parts and no filler if there is sheet metal damage.
  9. Welcome to the group. Enjoy the new ride and don't be shy about posting opnions or helpful information. Were they motivated to move the 07 since the 08's are out?
  10. Dave M - you dont say where you are but given the snow days you note I would likely do the same thing. Our company is extremely big on safety and had no qualms about paying for snow tires. The internal headaches from even a minor fender bender outweigh the cost of the tires alone ! That said I am still surprised at just how poor the OEM all seasons are. Our Honda van with Michelin all season and 65,000 km on them out performed the Edge all seasons with only 1000 km on them. Based on some of the other posts maybe AWD makes a big difference also but bottom line is everything is based on the quality of the rubber meeting the road.
  11. If you are making parts for a major auto manufacturer like Ford there is no way in the world you try and substitute an unapproved material or part under an approved contract. Every component in a part has to be from an approved list that has been tested and signed off by everyone including Ford (PPAP). If you change something without approval then your firm will likely (a) loose the balance of the supply contract once its discovered ( have to pay through the nose for any replacement/warranty claims Ā© never supply that outomaker again. I have no doubt that there is a part/design flaw but I am sure Ford signed off on it. Likely an unforeseen reaction /stress once the real production began. Still, a PITA as was noted earlier.
  12. Gluman. Glad factory tire went the extra yard to satisfy you and all I have read about the Hakka's are that they are among the best winter tires out there. Put about 600 miles on the Blizzaks yesterday and my observations are: - seem quieter than the stock all seasons on clear/dry roads! likely not the case but the trip was very quiet! - most of the trip was on clear dry highway. Handling was fine but there definitely seems to be a "roll over" point when you turn the car and it feels like the tire rolled over the edge of the tread. - didn't find that much snow on the side streets but when I did the handling was far , far better. No plowing when turning. No sliding to a stop and no wheel spin when pulling away. Snow tires are definitely worth every penny. did you just buy the tires and will have them put on the stock rims locally or did you pop for a tire/rim package ? Since its a company care we only do the tires and pay to have them put on the stock rims every winter/spring
  13. Shizzy, that seems like a long wait given the other posts on this forum. I wonder if they shut the plant down over the holidays rather than fight staffing issues? I would expect you to have the car in 6-8 weeks not wait that long for production. strange. Good luck with the new wheels. PS - go out and get snow tires if you drive in the white stuff at all. the stock ones are horrible in even a little bit of snow based on our front wheel drive SEL.
  14. I have OEM 17's and just went in today to get snow tires put on the factory rims. Had Blizzaks put on and have not had a chance to get a feel for them versus the all seasons. We are going for a highway trip tomorrow and I will post any observations/opinions based on this trip. My initial impression is the Blizzaks seem to have a slightly darty/roll over feel when turning on dry roads. Seems like the tire "rolls over an edge" at a certain point in the turn. Didn't notice it on the all seasons and will definitely be paying more attention for it now. The main reason I put the snows on it was I went around a corner with about an inch of snow/slush on the road and the all seasons lost traction and the car just plowed straight ahead instead of turning. Absolutely the worst performing tires in snow I have ever driven on. My major concern about snow tires is that 90% of the driving will be on nicely plowed/bare roads so wear will be a big factor. Based on the all seasons performance the $500.00 for the snows will be quickly offset by avoiding all the body work needed from sliding in to cars/curbs/poles etc... after every snowfall.
  15. Guess I will have to RTM ! My experience is with Honda and they have a nice little rocker switch labeled "High" & "Low". The only heating is in the bottom cushion. I am just assuming the Edge has high/low (two LED's/one LED illuminated) based on the pretty pictograph on my dash.
  16. Can you say "automated response" ? And they could do a little better in tailoring the program to pick up key words to better match the boiler plate response to the actual issue. Ah well, I guess they saved money over having a call center in India respond to the question. Likely outsourced to a low cost computer in Tonga. As far as "how is it the dealers fault"... it isn't BUT if they are really keen on selling the car with lots of expensive options/bells/whistles then they will likely pop for a new compatible phone to seal the deal. The cost of the phone will get built in to the transaction one way or another but if I were the sales rep I would not loose a 45,000.00 sale over a 150.00 phone ! Whats the line in the song... "how bad do you want it.. not bad enough" ? Name the artist/album/song !
  17. Hey TwoEdges.. Did you buy them both at the same time and/or from the same dealer ? If you and the wife are out at the same time park them side by side in the service drive through and start them up and have the advisor (and your sales rep from the dealer) explain how its "normal" for one and not the other. Same engine right ? I am going to go out and look at the engine bay and rear lift gate paint job. Company car and its gone in 2-3 years so I didn't look that closely at the paint. One thing I was impressed with was the quality of the paint job. No orange peel texture which is actually something I have begun noticing on lots of Mercedes. Surprised the Merc's have such a crappy paint job based on their cost and supposed reputation ! Let us know what they do about the two items.
  18. So you were just trying to pair your phone up with a demo or someone elses Edge to try it before you buy it ? My Treo failed the first couple of times hence my recommendation to go in and clean out both systems and start fresh. I have heard it can be done but will take 2-3 tries. If you are seriously looking at buying why not get the dealer to drop his price by "x" dollars to cover all/part of the cost of a compatible phone ? just an idea. I think you can get the treo to work but not all the functionality will be there.
  19. Great photo's. What did the flaps set you back ? How about the bug deflector? I noticed that Weathertech has a bug deflector for a reasonable price and was thinking of ordering it and some floor liners at the same time.
  20. I know exactly what they are talking about. 2008 SEL and on high (ie: two lights on) you can cook your backside in about 60 seconds. Switch it to low and it doesn't feel like anything is happening. Perhaps I fried all the nerves in my butt with the blast of heat and it is working on low but..... The seat heater in our other vehicle (Honda Van) does not it come on as rapidly or with the same intensity but you can feel the heat in both HI and LOW settings. With the Ford its an all or nothing type of thing I only use the heat for a couple of minutes on start up anyway. Give it a blast to heat it up and turn it off once I feel it. By that time the cabin is warming up and seat heat isn't needed.
  21. Go out to the sync your ride web site (ie microsoft). There is a users forum and I believe several people have tried to sync the 650 with various degrees of luck. I know several people in our company had huge problems sync'ing the 650. Multiple attempts with no success. I have a 700P with Bell Mobility (Ontario Canada) and it sync'd up after 3 attempts. Make sure you clear the sync off the palm and the palm off the sync before you try again (Old Micorsoft standby- turn it off and start fresh). The 700 has a problem that is documented in the various forums where it will be working fine then when you try and dial a call it will start the connection then flash a message after 3-4 seconds saying the call was unsuccessful. If you look at the treo it is working fine and the call is actually still in progress. I haven't seen a fix for this problem and just use the phone on manual for that call. usually works fine the next call. go figure ! A final comment. I sent MS a question about why no 700 treo's were listed on the approved/tested list. Next day the 700 (w?) was suddenly there. I don't think they have the time or desire to try every combination of phone/carrier so if its not on the list it will likely work anyway. let us know if it ever works and check the internet. http://syncmyride.com/Own/Modules/SupportC...upportHome.aspx
  22. Years ago Ford provided an option on the old Taurus wagon which was a retractable cargo cover. There were two "u" shaped clips mounted to the side of the rear cargo area right behind the rear seats. The cover could be kept in the back lying flat on the floor and when needed you just picked it up, inserted the unit in the clips and unrolled the cover just like a retractable window shade. There were two similar U clips right at the rear which the bar in the end of the cover just slipped in to. Very clean, simple and easy to use or remove. I'm surprised someone like weathertech hasn't offered this as a retrofit kit. Four holes in the side plastic and a retractable window shade and you are in business. I might go look at the dealers parts counter next time i'm in for service.
  23. Why the *ell would "parts be hard to get for something made in North America and only a 2007. (Okay, the parts were likely made in China or India). My understanding is if a supplier screws the pooch and Ford has to start doing a lot of warranty/recall work the supplier pays the price, big time. Sounds like a Tier 2 or Tier 3 supplier made some bad product and has to make improvements and a new run to fix the problem. If its a bad design/batch I would hope they fix it rather than ship the same crap just to get the cars back out on the road only to have it fail again.. this whole thread is making me nervous about Ford again after my initial impressions being so positive. Thank god the only burning smell in my car right now isn't from the car itself !
  24. Edgieguy, congrat's on the the new vehicle and I agree totally that Ford definitely seems to have its **it together on the production and delivery front. Where are you located relative to the Oakville Ontario plant? If your a distance and your choice was a fairly stock unit it might have come off the dealers assigned inventory or from another area dealer (unit swap between dealers). Any way you cut it Ford seems to be satisfying its customers. 07 MKX - My order was one of 5 that I know of (might have been others from other parts of the country) All the orders went in to the fleet company the same week and I believe they entered them with ford on the same day. All the units were identical except for colour combinations. The units were SEL's with the Navi and back up sensors being company mandated/supplied "options". Our fleet policy is they order once a year. Cars are kept 120,000 km or 3 years. If you are close to the limits when they get ready to order you get an email telling you what your choices are and when to get the order in by. Miss the order date, wait another year. I am fairly confident that all the units were produced to order as the delivery times for all the units were slightly different and seem to increase in time lag based on the distance from Oakville.
  25. This whole post points to the confusion automakers (and paint manufacturers) are causing with all the artistic names that the marketing folks dream up to try and create some imagined perception in the mind of the public. White, Red, Black, Deep Blue, .... Nope! can't have this, thats to direct, to common, not "sexy" enough ! Artic white (is that before or after global warming melted all the white snow in the artic?). Creme Brulee. Isn't that a blackend, burnt desert?. When I get asked what colour my edge is the answer is simple... RED !
