  1. Forgive me for being behind the times, I've been overseas for 20 years and only recently returned home. I'm playing catch-up. I can imagine that a detergent-containing fuel would struggle to remove deposits already in place, although the report from the AAA claimed measured reductions in deposit formation and measured preservation of fuel economy. It seems to be a good preventative measure and there's not a significant cost increase to switching fuel brand loyalty. All the best, Andrew.
  2. Forgive bumping the old thread, but this became timely as I was looking into better sources of fuel after a minor issue with cold weather running. It seems that cheaper sources of fuel that do not use as advanced pH buffers and detergents allow buildup of carbon deposits on critical areas such as the intake valves. This can result in 2-4% reduction in fuel economy, drivability issues (e.g. rough in very cold weather), and increased emissions (if your State checks those, that could be an issue). Fuel companies that are adhering to a higher standard of fuel than the legally required minimum have subscribed to a program called Top Tier. Not only do they have more advanced detergents and carbon-busting properties, but they also pass regular checks at more stringent thresholds than the legal minimum to ensure they are not diluted with contaminants. I had a little bit of rough running out of the blue as the weather turned cold and tracked it down to a bad tank of fuel. While some brands like Shell are 15 cents a gallon more, some brands like Chevron or Exxon aren't actually much more expensive than the cheap bad fuel I tried - if anything, there's only 1 or 2 cents a gallon difference. The octane rating, which enables greater advanced timing at higher octane ratings, is independent of the fuel's quality and depends upon your car's ability to detect the higher octane rating to automatically advanced the engine timing. From what I gather, the 3.5 V6 on my 2015 Edge does not do this to any significant extent - if at all. The greatest difference to performance, economy, and drivability is going to come from regular services and ensuring through use of quality fuels that the inside of the engine is nice and clean. I've uploaded some Top Tier Gasoline (and Diesel, for completeness) PDFs I found on https://www.toptiergas.com/ when looking into fuel comparisons. As with all things, do your own due diligence. All the best, Andrew. Fuel-Quality-Fact-Sheet-FINAL.pdf TOP_TIER_GASOLINE_Performance_Standard_revE_2017-03.pdf TOP_TIER_Diesel_Fuel_Performance_Standard_Rev_A_-_Feb2017.pdf
  3. Thank you - all is well! Brakes feel good and hopefully the brake fluid levels will be maintained. I'm going to keep a close eye on the brake fluid tank over the next couple of weeks to make sure that's solved the problem. All the best, Andrew.
  4. As it turns out, you're exactly right. The mechanic who did my warranty work on the Brake Booster earlier in the year cross threaded a connector to the master cylinder and that was where the leak was occurring. Unfortunately, the damage necessitated the replacement of the master cylinder and the dealership didn't have one in stock - so I've been without my Edge for a few days. The dealership was also out of rental cars to give me. However, since this was their mistake, they took one of the new cars off the sale lot and gave me the keys. So my wife and I have been "test driving" an EcoSport SE for the last several says. It's not a bad little car, but a 1.0 EcoBoost engine has nothing on the naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 of our Edge. I'm also missing the comforts of the Titanium trim level and some of the plastics feel a bit budget, but there's over $20,000 in price difference between the new MSRP of my car and this one so that's hardly a fair comparison for it. It feels like it would make a good first new car for a teenager just going off to university - low insurance group, solid build, safe, and reliable. As I'm a little beyond my university years now, I like the extra space and comfort of the Edge. I'll get my Edge back tomorrow. Looking forward to it. All the best, Andrew.
  5. Hmmm... since this post, I've noticed I've been losing brake fluid. After getting a low brake fluid warning on the dash, I bought a bottle from Ford on 30th July 2018 and topped it up to the maximum mark. As of today, I'm back to the minimum mark again. I suspect something has not gone right with the brake booster replacement, since brake fluid should be in a closed system and I didn't have these problems prior to May 2018. The car is going in for service tomorrow so I'll ask the dealer to follow up. All the best, Andrew.
  6. Thanks very much. My cargo hook, rather annoyingly, snapped the very first time I used it. I set up the net, put a hand umbrella in it, and went off driving down the road. Sadly, it didn't hold up and sheered off. I asked for the dealership to fix it under the warranty when I booked it in for April 19th and was told that the warranty does not cover misuse, abuse, and damage caused by the customer. Yea, right. I was also told that the hook could not be replaced without replacing the entire cargo trim area at a cost exceeding $500. I'll just order this online and fix it myself. Thank you! As an aside, based on my location, this ended up being a cheaper option (shipping included) amongst the various vendors: https://www.wholesalefordpartsfast.com/oem-parts/ford-hook-assembly-h2gz78454a46aa All the best, Andrew.
  7. As it turned out, I did indeed have the overly-sensitive brake booster installed on the vehicle so the brake pedal was effectively an on/off switch. The updated F2GZ-2005-E brake booster was installed by the dealership under the warranty and the brakes are excellent now - natural to modulate and have fine control over light braking. If anyone else finds their initial braking difficult to modulate, or that their brakes have a very binary on/off feel to them, I highly recommend this update. Even if your vehicle is not under warranty and you'd have to pay out of pocket to get this done, I'd still highly recommend it. The car is much easier and more civilized to drive smoothly when maneuvering on the driveway, proceeding through parking lots, or commuting in heavy slow traffic. Braking performance for heavy stops is unaffected when you need maximum braking force. All the best, Andrew.
  8. I did register there, it said that this service was not available for my vehicle (2015 Ford Edge Titanium, purchased this spring). An e-mail was circulated saying that all vehicles that were presently using that service would have it discontinued on 1st September 2018. I suspect, because my vehicle would not have been able to have the service for even a full year from the purchase date, they elected not to enable it at all and hoped I'd never realize I was missing out on anything. All the best, Andrew.
  9. So... it's May and there are still no prices for SmartLink despite asking the dealership several times in the interim. I think Ford has given up on this idea and is focusing on the Third Generation Edge now. One of the main things that interested me about SmartLink was the ability to do the Vehicle Health Report, which currently is not enabled on my 2015 Titanium using the MyFordTouch version of Sync. Unfortunately, Ford released a statement saying that they were going to discontinue the ability for owners of the Second Generation Edge to do a Vehicle Health report from September 1st, 2018. This negates the advantage of buying SmartLink for me, so I'm no longer going to chase up the dealership for a price - if they call me to let me know, I'll pass along the message, but I'm not going to make any further approaches to find out. All the best, Andrew.
  10. Thanks for the advice, I've following in your footsteps and just bought and downloaded the deluxe service manual for my 2015 Ford Edge Titanium V6 AWD. To aid anyone else considering doing the same, I'd like to add my review: I must say, this manual is very comprehensive. I browsed it a little bit, and it seems worth the money to get the deluxe version rather than the standard, as the hyperlinks throughout the document are extremely helpful. The PDF is 12,807 pages long and it is over half a gigabyte in size - no, those are typos, this thing is huge. Navigating through the document with Adobe Acrobat's text search feature alone is time consuming to say the least, as you'll get multiple hits and it takes even a quick computer a little bit of time to scan through the text of nearly 13,000 pages. On the vendor themselves: from sending payment (only PayPal is accepted) and providing my VIN, Factory Manuals had a personalized service manual available to download approximately 13 hours later. They advise that their target time for preparation and upload to their server is 12-24 hours. Overall, a great resource, an easy transaction, and a vendor who delivered exactly what they said they would exactly when they said they would. No complaints and I bookmarked them for use with another Ford in future. All the best, Andrew.
  11. I checked with the Ford Dealer on the 26th, but they have nothing on actual prices yet. The product pricing announcement has been pushed back to 5th or 6th of April, so I'll check back with them then. All the best, Andrew.
  12. Just to follow up on this, these bulbs arrived and I got them installed. Driving around with them in last night, I noticed a big difference in available light. A good, simple upgrade that fixed the problem. I recommend these bulbs as an acceptable solution to insufficient light from your headlights. I may try the H9 mod on the next set when these low beams eventually wear out (CPO warranty will have probably expired by then too), but these are good for now. All the best, Andrew.
  13. Great information, thank you very much. All the best, Andrew.
  14. Thanks very much. I ended up ordering sets of the Philips X-tremeVision bulbs in H11 and 9005, to make both low and high beams a bit brighter. I'll get 100% more life at the expenses of life expectancy and higher cost. If the H9 modification would be a brighter solution still, then that might be an option. However, if the only benefit over the above solution is lower cost then I'll stick with the out-the-box solution from Philips. All the best, Andrew.
  15. Do you know of anyone who has tried these specific LED bulbs, the 9006 bulb from Diode Dynamics? https://www.diodedynamics.com/low-beam-led-headlight-for-2011-2015-ford-edge.html https://www.diodedynamics.com/led-headlight-for-template-12.html Their website shows some images of bulbs that seem to have some kind of a box on the wiring and they don't say specifically where this is suppose to be mounted, although their general description seems to suggest that everything is supposed to fit behind the dust caps without any cutting. They also don't give you any photographs of the beam pattern to show the performance of the bulb to a camera - just some graphics of photometric measurements. Comments from anyone with direct experience of that exact kit would be greatly appreciated. I think what I'll do in the short term is order the H11 and 9005 Philips X-treme Vision bulbs, but longer-term I may think about upgrading to LED headlights if there are any that don't require modifications to install and are a genuine performance upgrade without the aforementioned detrimental increases in glare and beam pattern modification. The fact that the Diode Dynamics lists 9006 rather than H11 or 9005 for each set of lights makes me wonder if the LED position won't be an exact match for the filament position of the OEM bulbs. All the best, Andrew.
  16. What are the brightest T20 / 7440 / WY21W front indicator bulbs available without going to LED? I don't have FORScan and am not sure how to go about acquiring and using it. My 2015 Edge Titanium is also still under original warranty and a CPO warranty after that, so I don't want to be messing with too many things other than simple bulb selection. All the best, Andrew.
  17. Thanks akirby, much appreciated. All the best, Andrew.
  18. I had H7 Philips EtremeVision bulbs in my MINI in the United Kingdom and they worked very well. More costly and shorter lifespan than the OEM bulbs, but they were brighter and helpful on dark rainy country roads. Now that I'm driving an Edge here in the United States, I was thinking of the Philips XtremeVision bulbs again, but was also looking into LED options since so much of the car's lighting system is LED anyway. All the best, Andrew.
  19. This was a great link: http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/21296-overly-sensitive-brake-application-at-low-speed-andor-in-coldwet-conditions-2015-2016-ford-edge-2016-lincoln-mkx/ Where is the brake booster located so that we can check to see what version of the part we presently have installed? All the best, Andrew.
  20. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Ben. I guess I can calculate whether there's a 10% difference in price between 87 and 89 octane to determine whether the uprated fuel is worth purchasing. Akirby, what do you mean by "summer blend"? I've only recently returned to the United States from the United Kingdom and was unaware that there was any seasonal difference in fuels. All the best, Andrew.
  21. I've been trying to find out whether the naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 does any timing modification depending upon the type of fuel used. The manual says that the minimum is 87 octane, and it mentions that EcoBoost engines (which I don't have) should use higher octane fuels when doing heavier work (e.g. towing), however there's not mention whether there's any benefit to using a premium fuel in the naturally aspirated engine. If nobody knows the answer, I'll call the Ford customer service line on Monday and then report back. All the best, Andrew.
  22. When I was searching for an Edge, a core criteria of mine was the 3.5 naturally aspirated V6 rather than an EcoBoost engine. I felt the naturally aspirated engine had nicer characteristics to drive (quieter at low RPM, smoother throughout, peak torque at a more familiar place at higher RPM), and I was also concerned about long-term reliability in a forced induction engine. The EcoBoost engines are great for fuel economy, but I'd rather trade that for a more enjoyable drive and less risk of the unknown on the reliability front. All the best, Andrew.
  23. I just purchased a 2015 Ford Edge Titanium, which has Sync (MyFordTouch), and have had it for a couple of days now. From the service history, I understand that the previous owner had some problems with the bluetooth on the car, and taking it in for a reset was a frequent warranty complaint by him. When I started familiarizing myself with the car, I noticed that it would not connect to a phone. It'd say that bluetooth was switched off and must be turned on to continue. When selecting the button on the screen to turn the bluetooth on, it would think about it for a while and then abort the operation, taking me back to the homescreen or to the phone screen showing no phone was connected. I haven't done a master reset in the settings menu, but I have done a soft reset: simultaneously press and hold both the infotainment power button (top left) and the track forward seek button (lower down) together for 3-4 seconds until you get a response. The Sync system rebooted itself, was able to turn on bluetooth, and was able to connect to my phone. I have had one other time where the same problem resurfaced, and the same solution fixed it - the phone automatically connected via bluetooth as soon as the system came back online. The only downside that I can see is that if it occurs when you're in a rush and you need SatNav to get to where you're going, you're going to have to choose between driving without your hands-free calling enabled or waiting for 2-3 minutes for your Sync system to reboot before programming your route. All the best, Andrew.
  24. Hello folks, new member here. I've just purchased a 2015 Ford Edge Titanium and I followed up on the Ford press release for the FordPass SmartLink with my dealership. My Edge already has remote start and quite a few other features, but I was thinking of getting the SmartLink anyway so that I could do the Vehicle Health and Security Alerts Although the dealership initially didn't have any information on SmartLink, they phoned about their suppliers and eventually said that a price was due to be released on or about March 26th, so I should check back with them after that time. I'll let you know what I find out. All the best, Andrew.
