  1. I've been told by both my dealer and Ford that it is covered under the 5year/60,000 warranty, so like others have said, either argue until you get your way or take it to another dealer.
  2. They are great cars overall, but to an Oasis report and if it has had PTU seal leaks, or axle seal leaks listed (really the same thing) I'd stay away from that one. If it hasn't I wouldn't be worried.
  3. New PTU should be installed today. I'm crossing fingers again. 12th time's a charm right?
  4. Yes, there is camshaft sensors on our Edges.
  5. I don't think you'd have any troubles with the ramp and FWD. In general 2wd will always have less maintenance than 4wd vehicles. If you do go AWD, check an Oasis report before you buy to make sure it hasn't had any PTU/axle seal leaks. If it has, do NOT buy. I know most have been repaired, but I would just find one that hasn't had the problem. FWD you don't have to worry. I can't imagine you having any problems with a jet ski on a ramp unless it was a dirt ramp, or very slimy from algea where traction would be a problem, power sure won't be. I will say the AWD is awesome in the snow and ice, but it sounds like you don't have that worry, so if it was me, with $4 a gallon gas, I'd go FWD all the way - not to mention you should be able to buy it cheaper.
  6. They are flying in a specialist from Ford this time...I told them I wasn't accepting another seal kit even though it has already had a new PTU and new axle. I'm going for another new PTU.
  7. Going in today for 12th repair...My plan is to not accept the vehicle back unless there is a new PTU in it, but I am not looking forward to the pain it is going to be to get them to do that.
  8. It is a six speed auto. Only thing to watch out for is if it had a leaky PTU - then run away, seek shelter, and cover head. Just kidding, but if it has a history of PTU seal failure, stay away from the thing. See burning smell thread for more info.
  9. Sure sounds like a PTU to me. Please keep us posted if it is and maybe post in the burning smell thread to keep that updated.
  10. Good idea getting that in writing - I didn't and just got mine back from 11th repair. There has been many iterations of the seal, it is a design problem. Best way to tell if it has been repaired multiple times for PTU or anything else is to do an OASIS report. That will tell you of any work done at a dealer. I hope yours gets fixed.
  11. This is really getting old...leaking worse than ever. Will be going in Monday for 11th repair.
  12. Hah - going in for #10 today. This is starting to be a game. I should start taking bets on how long this one will last.
  13. I haven't heard anything about a transmission seal failing. Could be. The burning smell sure sounds like PTU. I'd just ask for clarification. Axle seal is the PTU. Please keep us posted on what they do. Mine is going in this morning for the 10th time and maybe if there is a transmission seal causing it I can try to point them to look at that.
  14. Sounds great! I hope it works out for you. Mine is going in this morning for their 10th attempt at repair...
  15. Great post Depiry! Thanks for that info!
  16. Personally, I'd take it back. I know some are having luck with repairs, but I've had my 08 repaired 9 times and it is still stinking. The dealership is now pushing it off as though they can't find the leak. I'm in a similar boat with the 3/yr warranty coming off in May. I have been told by the dealership that it is covered under the 5 yr/50k. My bigger question is weather they will still ding you for diagnostic - and that is simply because I've never had a vehicle with a powertrain warranty that I've had to use. Perhaps someone can clarify that bit. All I can tell you is mine leaked 2 days after I bought it and I believed the dealership who told me they would absolutetly take care of the problem - it was no big deal. Boy was that wrong. Aside from the PTU problem - I can say I like the car, it is just that darn PTU leak makes me want to set the car on fire in the dealer's lot.
  17. Just wanted to chime in here on custom tunes. I have been directly involed in them on a dyno and can tell you they affect shift points, timing, and fuel ratio at various throttle positions - WOT, idle, and various other positions. I have personally seen proven on a dyno that it will make a difference in power. Having said that, I don't know anything about the brand being mentioned here. I know Superchips was a really good brand for Fords a few years ago, not sure about now. I think that most claims by any manufacturer are going to be exagerated for marketing purposes, and one could certainly debate whether the cost is worth the gain. I've had two vehicles done, noticed improvements to both in power. In my old 96 F150 it even seemed to make better mileage if you kept your foot out of it, but was considerably worse if you drove it hard. It really makes sense when you see the custom tune done with fuel ratios. If you dump more fuel in, you are going to burn more - there is no way around that. I think claims of better mileage could be made that with more power readily available, some people may have the engine laboring less to keep certain speeds(less throttle position) which could affect mileage to the better, but I think more often than not you will see a decrease in mileage. Just my $.02 - I didn't read the whole thread, just that last page and thought I'd offer my experience up.
  18. no dice. replaced seal again and guess what. leaking. I'll be calling tomorrow for 9th repair attempt...
  19. I think it is probably OK. My understanding is the system monitors all 4 wheels 100 times per second or 1000 times per minute can't remember which, exactly, but it is a lot. If you had tires that were worn unevenly, it could detect slippage due to the different circumference of the tires, especially in a turning situation. I would think there is more tolerance than that, but considering on older 4x4 vehicles they used to say you could take out rear or front differentials with different sized tires, and the fact that changing tire size on newer vehicles makes speedometer recalibration necessary, I'd say it is a safe bet the problem is just the uneven tire wear. I'd probably get new tires sooner than later so you don't cause damage to the AWD parts. Of course, this is all assuming you have an AWD unit. If your tires are pretty good, it could go away once the tires "even out" from normal driving, but I just like to error on the side of caution. Good Luck!!
  20. You can look under the car and just follow the axle to where it goes into the PTU. You should be able to see the leak there. You'll have to get under the car to really see. The smell is like a burning oil or rubber smell. I'd have the dealer check it out just to make sure. Most states have a 3 day return policy where you can get your money back. If yours is leaking, take the sucker back - I sure wished I did. The dealer assured me they could fix it, and now I just had my 8th repair 2 years later. I wouldn't be afraid of an Edge, it's a great car with the exception of the leaky PTUs, but if you got a leaker, chances are you got one from someone who was tired of having the problem and traded it in.
  21. Thanks for the support. Edge is in and the service advisor and mechanic both agree with me to try replacing both the PTU and axle. They have to get the OK from Ford. According to them, Ford is the only reason they keep trying to do seals. Hopefully whatever the choice it gets fixed permanently this time. They say mine is the only one they have had that has been back more than one time for the same problem although they have seen a lot of them leak. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.
  22. Hey guys, Unforunately I don't have many options for other dealerships here in MT. The closest large dealership is 90 miles away and owned by the same person as the one in my city. I could go closer if I want to use a very small dealer I could get closer, 45 miles, but I doubt they would be any better due to their much smaller volume of cars - not to mention satisfying me isn't going to be their top priority since I bought the car at a different Ford dealer. I know around here most dealers will give top priority to their own customers before someone else's. That leaves my with driving over 160 miles (one way) for another large dealer to try it out and see if they can do a better job, which I have my doubts on. I'm trying to be patient because as some point I would think the dealer is going to get sick of seeing this car in and get it fixed. Not to mention I really don't want to incur the cost of that trip, time off work, perhaps a motel, meals, etc just to try a dealer that far away. I've been trying to push them for a new PTU and axle in case there is some small defect they can't see when they check it out, but Ford is telling them to keep trying seal kits. I do know they are using the latest one. Supposedly Ford has yet another design they are working on, but it has not been released yet. I do question the abilities of their techs to a point, but on the same hand they said they have fixed many of them with one fix and have never had one in as many times as mine for it. I think this is basically one of those deals where they don't really care how much it comes in as long as they are getting paid - by Ford for now. I can't believe I'm saying this, but my wife and I still really like the car except for this problem. I'm wondering if my only option is going to be to "test drive" another more expensive vehicle while mine is in the shop next time and hold it for ransom until they replace everything in the darn thing!! Oh yeah and it's leaking again....8th time a charm??? I'll be calling them on Monday to get it in...
  23. OK - Back in for 7th attempt at repair...
  24. Just got mine back from 6th repair. Hopefully it worked this time, but I'm not counting on it...
  25. Sparky, Just curious if you know what they changed between the mid 09's and earlier? I'm wondering if my 08 can be fitted with a PTU from an 09 or 2010 model. Just got the car back from 6th attempt at repair. This time it was the intermediate shaft seal, so the latest version of the "outer" seal did hold. I expect it will be good until next winter. This has been the longest I've gone without a repair - about 9 months, so maybe they are getting better. I'm kind of angling with the dealer that they need to switch out everything on the next repair - PTU, axles, all of it because it seems in my mind at least that something is causing all of these seals to fail. I'm thinking some manufacturing defect or something where maybe the axle is bent, out of round, undersized...I know it is grasping, but they did say they checked out all of the tolerances and everything checked out, but they also could have just been saying that to appease me.
