I wish it was that easy to find a new dealer, but the next large dealer is 90 miles away and owned by the same owner as mine. Other dealers are still 60-100 miles away and very small, so I wouldn't expect their techs would have any more experience with it, plus history shows they don't particularly want to work on a vehicle another dealer sold unless they absolutely have to, so service will probably not be that great. I guess that is what you deal with living in MT. I hope most do get repaired and that it holds, I've been a Ford fan my whole life, but I also understand how corporate greed works, and that isn't typically good for the customer. From what I've been reading, the problems do persist on new models up through 2010 at least. Mine happens to be on 08.

A question to those who had PTU problem
Primetime replied to William_Canada's topic in All Wheel Drive (AWD)
Yeah, it was the newest repair in Feb also. In fairness, It doesn't actually drip on my garage floor, but I do get the burning smell, so it isn't as bad of a leak. I'm just frustrated, obviously, by having to have had it repaired so many times. The last seal did look much different than the rest of them and I don't have word yet which seal is leaking this time, could be driver side whereas the rest have always been passenger side. I was hopeful when it made it through the first few cold spells, but it didn't appear to hold. -
Don't feel bad. Mine has been repaired 5 times and leaking again. I'm waiting for fix #6. Zero confidence. Ford doesn't want to fix this problem because it is a design issue that only affects a small portion of people and woudl rather spend the money repairing them until they are out of warranty and off the road.

A question to those who had PTU problem

You may be on to something there. The problem mainly seems to happen in cold weather. I also have the problem. It happens every time the car is driven in cold temperatures ie. 0 or below. I won't have the problem all summer long, but once winter hits here in MT, bingo it starts leaking again. I've had it fixed 5 times and it is leaking again - I'm just waiting to get it in...again. Driving conditions and/or how you drive it don't seem to have any effect. -
Sounds like a traditional starter issue. Could just be a connection on the starter cables, or even battery cable. Easy thing to clean both(make sure battery cables are tight). If that doesn't help, have a local parts store check the starter. Hope this helps.

Hey, just wanted to post an update. I have no leak and it has been almost 2 months since 4th repair. I hope I'm not jinxing myself, but I'm hoping they may actually have a fix for all of us this time. Ford appears they are going to step up to the plate on giving me peace of mind as well - which is the right thing to do. It actually got them a sale as my work car is up for replacement this spring and if they didn't make me happy I was going to another brand, but I'll be keeping with a Ford product. Took a lot of work on my and the dealer's part, but they overall wanted to keep me as a customer, so this appears to be the best thing for me, the dealer, and Ford.

Unfortunately the axle seal is the same leak as the PTU leak. There is a double seal there - outer and inner. It's the same thing, so basically you have a leaking PTU.
-
Look at the Burning Smell thread on this site. Has much info on PTU leaks. Typically it's pretty easy to find the leak once you get under it.
-
Kudos to you! Finally a good do it yourselfer to help the rest of us out. I can't afford to dump the car after the warranty runs out, so I'll most likely be stuck with my leaker for a really long time. I look forward to your progress. Heck you'll probably be the guy that finally finds a permanent solution for this.

Well, got the Edge back after 4th repair yesterday (with the new seal and tool)- stunk all the way home so bad my eyes burned - worst it has ever been. I'm hoping it is just oil burning off from the repair procedure, but since that hasn't happened any time in the other 3 attempts, I really expect to find a puddle under it this morning. I'll let you know if we are going back for the 5th repair or not. I have no faith that it will last. Will keep you guys posted. Merry Christmas anyway!

Thanks for the info druck! By the way, you mentioned it came out the 15th. Is that Dec 15 as in 2 days ago? The reason I ask is that I want to make sure my dealer has the most updated stuff before they attempt my 4th repair. I reaaaaaaly don't want a 5th repeat.

jourabchid, Please see if you can get more info about the new design for us - is it a newly designed PTU, or just a new seal? I'd personally like to know to see if it is the same info that my dealer is giving me. Here's to hoping they finally have a fix after 2 years of the problem(I doubt it though). Kind of funny Ford advised them not to fix it with the current seals - they actually admit they don't have a way to correct the problem right there.

Thinline - I agree with you 100% - they should take care of the customer first and foremost. It is the right thing to do, but unfortunately any corporation is going to look only at their bottom line - nothing else. Sad, but true in nearly any corporate giant. I guess it may have sounded like i was making excuses for them, and maybe I was, but yes, in the end they need to get this thing fixed permanently and take care of us customers who have spent thousands of dollars on their product - especially in a bad economy when a lot of other people weren't/aren't buying. I hope more than most they can get a permanent fix for this darn PTU issue as I don't want to ever have to take my Edge back in for a PTU fix, but I currently believe I'm probably in for a 5th, 6th, maybe even 7th visit as I have zero cinfident that they have a solution, or will this year.
-
To add to that - I agree a recall would not benefit that many people in my opinion largely because Ford does not appear to have a permanent solution for the problem. Hopefully they will at some point, and maybe then a recall could happen. You may notice a lot of recalls only effect vehicles that are a few years old whereas our Edges are relatively new. Unfortunately, it seems that if one has the leak, they will continue to have the leak(I believe it is only an issue in cold weather extremes). It will most likely be years before any recall action would be done. In Ford's defense, if they just did a widespread recall and replacement of the seal, it would cost them a lot of money and they would not have solved the problem, but made more people aware of it, thus creating more headaches for them, so it is in their best interest to keep it as low key as possible to avoid the costs and negative publicity of a recall.

Well, my car will be down for a couple weeks. Apparently there is another new seal and new special tools that they are ordering in - they claim they just came out a couple weeks ago. I really have no choice but to let them make another stab at it...
-
Well, cars in I'll keep you all posted on progress. I also just turned 16k miles on the car. They also had a Taurus X in for a PTU seal and another Edge - not counting mine. Sparky - it isn't just that easy to go to a different dealer for me - this is the only "large" dealer in a 200 mile radius - there are a couple of small town dealers within 40-80 miles, but the next largest dealer(85 miles away) is owned by the same people as mine, so I don't think I'll have much better luck elsewhere. They said they are going to talk to Ford on my issue and we'll see what happens from there.
-
Well, I was waiting to pass judgement. We just got our first cold spell in MT and tonight I noticed the burning rubber smell. Checked the garage floor and sure enough - there's the fluid - again. I'll be calling the dealer to get it in for the 4th attempt at repair. It lasted from March until now, but as I figured it would happen as soon as it got cold outside. I'm going to see what they want to do to rectifiy the situation as I have no hope at all that they will be able to have a permanent repair for my 08.
-
I'd take it in for alignment/balancing. It will only be under warranty for a year or 12000 miles. Better safe than sorry. I got burned by that on my pickup at 30k needed alignment and I though it would be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty, but wasn't. Good Luck!!
-
Hello and good luck. I'd suggest going to the Burning Smell thread on the Maintenance & TSB part of the site. There's 30+ pages of people with the leaky PTU problem. Keep us posted. I'm hoping they'll eventually find a fix before I'm out of warranty. I haven't had the problem since the 3rd attempt at fixing and it has been OK since March, but I'm just waiting for it to get cold and start leaking again. Just have no confidence that they have it fixed.
-
My 08 also had the sound you are talking about with the suspension. Wound up being a loose nut - they had to test drive it 3 times to find it. Was no big deal - fixed under warranty. I'd post more of a description, but I keep the paperwork in the car and the wife has it at work. Maybe that can help the dealer with somplace to start looking.

Yep, mine is doing it from the plastic car seat for our child. I put a while towel under the car seat to attempt to prevent it. I'm really starting to wonder about the overall quality of this car...with the PTU issues I've had, and the plastic pieces coming off that I've simpy put back on myslef. My 2000 Sable had leather seats and we had the same car seat in there with no dye issues. I haven't seen it from clothing though - yet.

Guys please stop attacking each other. Many of us don't want this thread locked beacause it is very useful in helping with the PTU problem fixed or not.
-
No offense, but read the Burning Smell thread in the Maintenance, recall, TSB section of this website. It'll be a real eye opener on the PTU issues a LOT of us have had and still do ongoing. It may appear the issue is fixed, but they tend to go out in the winter, so we may not see much with them again until December. I sincerely hope you don't wind up with the problem, but it is good to know about it, so you can have an idea of what is going on if you wind up with the symptoms.

I also think it is a great idea. It may be somewhat of a rehashing of the T-Bird turbocoupes from the early and mid 80's, but I loved those cars! I had an 88 Turbocoupe. large car with 2.3L 4 cyl engine. Over 200hp and 30+ mpg. Sold it after 150k trouble free miles. I've always loved the efficiency and power a turbo can give and with modern turbos, there is really very little to no lag. I couldn't be more excited to see them using it again - best of both world with more power and better mileage!

I had the "thunk" one time - I'm just going to wait and see if it happens some more before I get too worried - I am having a clunk that just started when going over small bumps in the road - seems to be from the passenger side. I'm going to call the dealer to see if they want to look at it or wait. I'm sure that is probably something loost from it being torn apart 3 times for the PTU issue. On a good note though, it is getting really good mileage - 24-29 MPG depending on if I'm in town or on the highway. I run mid grade gas and it is way better than I ever expected.
