  1. I noticed mine has the "tick" as well. It almost sounds like a mini-diesel. I'm going to hope it is the injectors as that kind of makes sense to me. I have heard other Edge's sound like it, so I'll just hope if it is something more than a normal sound, it fails while still under warranty. I can say if anybody sells their car rather than trading in down the road, it might be a hard sell when someone thinks it is something wrong with the car and you are sounding like a car-salesman downplaying a problem. I always sell me cars outright as it seems trading in is just giving your car to the dealer, so I can seee this biting me in a few years, although if I have many more PTU problems, I'll probably trade it in anyway, so the dealer can have the problem back rather than some poor soul buying the car.
  2. druck, again I meant no offense at all. We need more people like you that are willing to help on this site. I am glad that you mentioned the new seal for myself as well as the many other people who may not know about it. My frustration is simply with the situation of having a new car that has been into the shop for multiple attempts at repair that remain unresolved.
  3. No offense, but I don't put much faith in the new seal kit. I hope you are right and it will be a permanent fix, but the issue has been ongoing for well over a year and they've done 5 revisions of the seal including this one. I'm sure eventually they will find a fix and maybe this is it, I'll just have to wait until it leaks again to find out, and based on my experience, that probably won't happen until December or January when it gets cold enough again. The saddest part of this whole ordeal is that I have zero confidence that my Edge is fixed(I don't have this newest seal as mine was last fixed in March). I also have lost most of my confidence in the long term reliability of the car, but I can't afford just to dump it off for something else. I'm a hardcore Ford guy(not to mention stockholder) and don't want to switch brands, but I don't really want to buy another one in the near future either.
  4. I had the PTU leak as well on my 08 with 7500 miles on it(when it all started). Replaced the seal, then it leaked again in 2 weeks so they replaced the whole PTU. 1 monthe later it was leaking again and so they did another seal. It has now been ok for about a month and has about 9500 miles total on the car. I'm not confident that it is fixed, but will probably be OK until the weather gets cold again next winter (PTU leak problem appears to be more prevalent in cold weather areas)- luckily it will still be under warranty and hopefully they will have found a permanent fix for it by then. I really like the car, but I wonder about the long term reliability after it has been taken apart and put back together so many times, not to mention if the fluid got low at all before it was fixed.
  5. Mine had a rattle like that and it turned out to be the seatbelt clasp rattling against the plastic pillar in the back seat - simply moved it by twisting it and the sound went away.
  6. Well, they replaced the seal again. It was kind of funny - I asked to talk with the mechanic and his first words to me were "this isn't the one we replace the seal on yesterday is it?" The dealer finally admitted they are doing a lot of these - before they said they were only seeing the problem a lot on the Taurus Xs. I noticed on the statement that the part number had a B instead of an A after it, so maybe it is a different seal than last time - they told me it was a different seal that was leaking. The mechanic said his daughter has an 07 that has never had any problems, so he doesn't know why some do and some don't. I suppose it is like anything else - depends on the mold it came out of or something. At any rate - I'll keep posting if/when it leaks again. Some here have mentioned the problem seems to be more in colder weather places, mine has seemed to follow that, but I wonder if it is more an issue of when the PTU is actually sending power to the rear wheels. In warmer/dryer climates, that probsably rarely happens as the front wheels would seldom slip, whereas in the snow and ice, it is happening all the time. Just a thought. I think if it goes again, I'm going to demand they replace all of the axles and PTU to make sure all the parts are new and/or an extended warranty at no cost - I know it is supposedly covered under the 5yr/50,000, but I'd like to see them bump that up to 75k or 100k for my troubles. 3 replacements in 3 months of owning the car is not acceptable.
  7. I really hate to go through arbitration, and I'm not sure about the lemon law in MT but I also hate to continue to have this problem, so I'm going to give them another shot at it since it is under warranty. Yes, it does have the burning smell as well as smoking from the engine compartment once it gets bad enough. I usually look for the puddles under the car to begin, but I can also easily look under it myself as I have a pit in my garage. It seems like they would find a way to fix this permanently as it has to cost them a lot of money to keep replacing PTUs in these cars - not to mention the lawsuit if someone finds out they are having health problems from breathing the burnt fluid fumes or a fire starts from the fluid dripping on the exhaust. It really bugs me as a Ford fan(and stockholder) to have these problems in an otherwise good car and see all the people on here that have the continued problem for over a year.
  8. I'm curious if any of you has had the problem actually fixed...I'm in for the 3rd time for axle seal/PTU replacement on my 08 that I've only owned for 3 months. Had 7500 miles on it when I bought it, now has 9500. I'm hoping they can actually fix it this time.
  9. If you can get under the car, just look at where the exhaust goes up and you'll see the axle seal leak. I had mine replaced 3 days after I purchased the 08 (6 months used) at the end of Dec. Two weeks later it was leaking again, so they replaced the whole PTU(said it had a small crack in it). Now, two months later it is leaking again from the same spot so going back to the dealer...
  10. Well, my 08 SELhas had the problem 3 times now. First time replaced seal 3 days after purchase 7500 miles (bought 6 months used), second time replaced PTU - they said it had a small crack in it, now having the leak again at 9500 miles. Sure would be nice if they could figure out a permanent repair...
  11. Thanks for that info. Like I said, we love the car and my wife doesn't want anything else, but I'm not going to throw away more good money for bad. I also think Ford will eventually have to get this straightened out, but I don't want to have to become an expert doityourselfer as far as axle seal leaks go once it is under warranty, nor do I want to have to just get rid of the darn thing right before the warranty ends. I do think I am going to see if this time they will replace the PTU and axles as the seal and PTU hasn't worked. Sucks to go from a trouble free Sable that I've had for 6 years to a "new" car that has been in the shop 3 times in 3 months.
  12. Well, I've been reding about this since I started with my PTU problems on my 08 Edge SEL AWD, and finally decided to post since it will be going in on Wednesday for the 3rd time. Here's my story - I bought it used from the dealership at the end of December. It was originally a rental car in LA. I bought it six months old with 7500 miles on it here in Great Falls, MT. Had it for 3 days and had the leak. Dealer did seal kit and within 3 weeks it leaked again. This time they replaced the whole PTU(or siad they did). Now a couple of months later it is smoking and stinking with puddles underneath again. I've got a whopping 9500 miles on it now. I'm going to advise them of the heat method for the seal and I saw someone else on here who had to have the axle replaced as well. I'm hoping they fix it. My wife and I love the car (it is her daily driver), but don't want to shell out more $$ for a new one that I would bet will leak as well. I'm thinking about asking the dealer for an extended warranty - has anyone gone that route?
