Rankat1
Just got a new 2012 Ford Edge Limited a couple of months ago and looking to have a hitch installed. Ford dealer pricing hitch with install around $700. Seems a little high... Also called U-Haul for hitch install and was quoted $320 installed. Has anyone had either of these installed? Is there anything I should be aware of with either option? Does pricing sound about right? Thanks for the feedback!
candurin
It is very easy to do and takes 45-60'minutes (using a friend to help hold things up). Hitch is about $175. I've never done it before and it was EASY! http://www.amazon.com/Draw-Tite-75709-Class-III-Hitch/dp/B004R2ZW3M Here's a great write up: http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?/topic/10789-draw-tite-install-on-my-2012-edge/ Note, this did NOT include wiring up the harness.... If you're not up for DIY, the UHaul price isn't too bad, as long as that includes the wire harness (which would cost you another $50 or so, anyway) and the hitch. RJG
The Ford tow package includes more than just the hitch and wiring. I consider after the fact hitches, whether Ford or U Haul....mainly good for hauling bicycles on hitch mount racks. For towing, you usually want coolers on trans and power steering. Different flashers, higher capacity radiator, maybe different fan, not sure if trans axle ratio is different on Edge with tow, etc. Edited August 3, 2012 by RJG
Tacyon
I have a 2011 limited with 302A package and the factory tow. IIRC besides the class III hitch, there is a larger capacity radiator, higher CFM fans, higher output alternator (?), and towing stability control for the stability control system and wiring harness... aggie8387
I bought and installed these: Draw-Tite 75709 Class III Hitch $169.45 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004R2ZW3M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Draw-Tite 118515 T-One Connector with Upgraded Circuit Protected ModuLite for Ford Edge $75.14 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008I1FRR4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And added this to raise the height of my cargo carrier. PowerLift Dual Hitch Extension Cap 4000 Pounds $39.59 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CC29PK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Hitch installation took longer than they said, but I just took my time with it. Installing the wiring harness required some adaptation because it was impossible to thread the wires past the right side tail light due to restricted space not mentioned in the instructions. Just had to splice wire to make it work. The savings was well worth the time it took to install.
