07 Edge SEL AWD no crank after overheating

I was going down the highway the other day when it started to lose power, saw it was over heating and started to pull off when it died, noticed that the fans were not working, set on the side of the road for 2 hrs letting it cool down, straight wired the fans to a toggle switch to try and make it home or somewhere I could look at it safely, and put water back in it, it started back running normally so I started towards my house, after about 10 minutes it started losing power again and developed a rattle that kind of sounded like my valves but only did it above 3,00 RPM, I pulled over again so it wouldn't over heat again and called a tow truck to be safe, tried to start it to drive it up on the roll back and it tried to crank and then stopped, tried to turn it over again and it only gave a single click, would turn the motor over any, it has 255k miles on it, new valve covers gaskets, water pump, oil pump, and timing chains, any help to run down what the problem is would be awesome

well if the mechanicals are sound, we would need to verify the electricals - alternator, battery, starter, and key  fob.

if the dash comes on as normal when you turn the key but the antitheft light is flashing fast, there is most likely a problem with the keyfob. in a very low percentage of situations, it is the PATS ring.
