  1. awake33, From the schematics you supplied, if you wish to have the Fog Lights ON all of the time, you need to ground the Fog Light wire from the Master Light Switch. By grounding the Fog Light Wire, as soon as the key switch is in the ACC position, the Fog Lights will go ON. On the other hand, if you wish to have control over this - regardless of the Master Light Switch position (i.e. Fog's ON), you can simply install a switch that will "cut" the ground off and hide the switch under the dash or anywhere you want. By doing so (installing this "cut off" switch) and leaving it in the "OFF" position, then the Master Light Switch will have control over the Fog's...In other words, once you use the High Beams, the Fog's will go off.
  2. edge18, Are you sure they installed the NEW redesigned PTU --> 7251A? This new PTU has a deflector on the PTU that prevents the leaking oil from ever contacting the hot exhaust, hence you will no longer have the "burning" smell...But it may still leak... Could you double check this...Do you see the deflector right above the Y pipe of the exhaust? The reason I am asking this, is because I am due next week for a NEW PTU replacement and my dealership has ordered the 7251A (they had to pull some strings with Ford Tech in order to have the approval of replacing the entire PTU unit..)
  3. Freeflyer, Weasel, Please feel free to PM me directly. Anyone else from the Montreal Area, please do so.. Smamtn, There is no Lemon Law in Canada. The ONLY protection in the Automotive industry that we have is a Mediation Service that is operated by CAMVAP. The "rule of thumb" for CAMVAP is that the vehicle MUST have less than 60 000 Km or be less than 36 months in order for a "buy back" from the manufacturer in the event that the arbitrator rules in your favor. For "older" vehicles or those with more than 60K, then a "buy back" is not an option, but they can force the Manudfacturer to fix the problem...The Arbitrators decision is FINAL. If you are a Canadian, this service is available Nation wide and it is free of charge.
  4. Weasel, For those of us in Canada, can you post a link or Tel number to the Department within Transport Canada that you contacted on this issue... I don't expect the car to catch on fire, however, oil dripping on a HOT exhaust system is potentially a Fire Hazard. Does anyone want to be liable for this? Furthermore, as I mentioned in my previous post, the smell of burning fumes inside the cabin is certainly not healthy, specially if there are children in the vehicle. This is certainly a Health Hazard.
  5. Overall, my personal opinion and I am sure many of you share the same, is that FORD is doing a very poor job in addressing this on-going issue. I can understand that a new model as the EDGE was in 2007, that you would have "teething" problems, however, the PTU issue has also affected the 2008 model. What about the 2009? Maybe is too early to tell. How many folks out there are NOT aware that the burning smell that is being going on for a couple of weeks is coming from their vehicle. I suspect a good number of drivers of the EDGE and MKX are female - which we all know that the majority of them do not understand the "complexity" of the vehicle besides the "Gas needle"...I do not mean to offend any ladies that are part of this Forum who are knowledgeble of vehicles...just stating the facts.. The fact is that FORD is willing to resolve this issue by replacing the PTU or Seals. However, this is not THE solution. It does not take anyone with an IQ of 180 to realize that there is a major defect on the design of the PTU/Seals. I believe that after almost 2 years that the car has been in the market, that it is suficient time for FORD to come up with a solution. The question is...Is it worth it to them? Engineering time, testing, and retrofits? This is high $$, specially now that the economy and the company are doing bad. I agree that this is not doing FORD any good in terms of loyalty and repeat buyers, however, we all shelled out several thousand $$ to purchase a vehicle that is supposed to operate properly, not one that needs to be in the shop everytime you go for an oil change to have the PTU seals replaced. At the end of the day, we can only help ourselves by making the necessary "noise" so they (FORD) can hear us, otherwise, it will continue business as usual...
  6. Well, I spoke too soon. My PTU is leaking again...This is the 4th time it has happenned. Needless to say, I AM FED UP!!! Ford needs to take responsibility for this DESIGN FAULT. These are the steps that I am currently taking - applies to Canadian Users 1) Contacted FORD Canada to start a File on my issue. Ford rep is to investigate this today and report back to me by the end of the day. Interesting enough, the Ford rep has "never" heard of this issue on the Edge. Hmmm... Reported to him that my current Ford dealership has replaced numerous PTU's on both Edge and MKX vehicles. I also mentioned this website and the numerous vehicles that have this problem... Most importantly, I mentioned that the leak over the exhaust system is a potential FIRE HAZARD (smoke out of the vehicle) and the exhaust fumes are a health hazard specially when there are children involved... 2) Contacted CAMVAP http://www.camvap.ca/eng/camvap_for_me.htm so I can start a "legal" process to address the current issue. Let see what happens...Will keep you all posted. For those in the Montreal Area, if you wish to contact me, please PM me. If we all get together instead of individually addressing this issue, it will carry a lot more weight, and Ford will have no choice but to address this problem.
  7. Freeflyer, I would recommend going to "Desjardins Ford" on Marcel Laurin. Get a hold of Richard Rochon who is a Service Advisor. I had the same problem last year, went thru 2 PTU's...The problem was resolved after their Service Manager and head tranmission mechanic decided to replace the PTU seals. It took them the entire day - they took their time to ensure everything was proper. I can say that since last winter (over 12 months now) I no longer have this problem. Give them a try..
  8. bpalez, If you are looking for an engine cover - can't understand why FORD did not decide to put one on the Edge to cover all of the wiring..??? You can use the Lincoln MKX engine cover. It fits right on. The only drawback, It has a "Lincoln" enbossed on the cover. I don't mind it since the cover dresses up the engine bay nicely.. You can purchase the cover at your local FORD dealer for about $60CDN..
  9. Car looks SICK !!!! Great job, keep it up.. How did you "black out" the foglight bezels..Why is Vinyl over?
  10. Would it be possible to control the AWD? In other words, since there is a solenoid that controls the power to the rear wheels, the possibility of installing a bypass switch that is user control should be possible. However, would there be any damage to the rear differential and transfer case if they were engaged for a certain period of time? If the answer is no, then you can turn the AWD into a "4x4" by simply flipping a switch..
  11. Well, count me in with the same problem... A while back the "tire pressure sensor fault" lite up out of the blue. I stopped, visually inspected all of the tires, and they all looked OK. Keept on driving home. Killed the engine, got out my pressure gauge and measured all 4 tires - all of them were within specs. Restarted the Engine, and low and behold, the message sensor no longer displayed the "tire pressure sensor fault"...Strange, I did not think much of it but a glitch. Several weeks later, the same thing happened on my way home. Stopped the engire, restarted and the fault went away.. Today, as I am driving on the hwy, the same thing happened...Except this time, stopping the engine (turn it off) did not stop the message center from displaying the fault. I decided to stop at our local Ford dealer to see if they could take a quick look at it. The technician decided that he wanted to retrain the system. Got the 1st tire done (Front driver), moved over to the 2nd tire (passenger front) and the sensor did not respond. His conclusion, the sensor is defective. Now, I have to wait until next week to have it replaced. Hope this helps out there..
  12. Locate the OIL Filter at the front of the vehicle (obviously under the car).. (The OIL Filter is right next to the front bank exhaust...) Next, from the OIL Filter, looking towards the rear of the vehicle, you will immediately notice an Aluminum pan...This is the Engine OIL pan.... At the back of this OIL pan (once again, looking towards the rear of the car) right before the driveshaft, you will notice a "plug" ...This is the OIL draning "plug"...Remove and let it drain... A good 1/2 hr or longer (if you're not in a rush) to ensure that you get as much of the old oil out. Remember, the EDGE takes 5 1/2 quarts of Oil once you fill up..
  13. As pointed out by many, it is up to you to decide what you want to do...Syntetic is definetely the winner here without a doubt. Yes, it is more expensive than conventional Oil, but it does offer better protection and benifits.. If one phrase could sum it up..."the Oil is the life of your Engine.." Up to you to decide..
  14. Increasing the handling is more than just replacing the springs...You need to also think about the shocks. The current shocks were designed to "travel" a certain distance hence offering you the best dampening possible. By replacing the springs, you are reducing the ride heigh and you are also "compressing" the shock since it is no longer expanding to it's intended lenght. It is now 1.5-1.75" (depending on the spings) "shorter"..It does not sound like much, but it makes a difference. Have you ever seen cars that have been lowered "bouncing" around on the road..? well, this is exactly what happens when the springs are replaced and the shocks are not. You will always need to "match" the shock to the spring. If performance is what you need, then this is a MUST. I do not know about the stock shocks and the effect that it has with lowered springs. Perhaps someone else who has done this already can comment.. On the other hand, what I have seen on aftermarket springs (H&R and Eibach), it is not clear if these are "specific rate" or "progressive rate" springs. Something that perhaps someone else who has looked into this can comment. A larger swaybar also helps with the handling improvement in the car. Both Front and Rear swaybars. You will need to look into a thicker swaybay (I believe at time H&R has one available for the Edge) since the stronger bar will help minimize body roll. Needless to say, lowering the car also improves the look or the vehicle. Good luck..
  15. For those of you who are interested on the PTU problems, here are some schematics.. S7V87B06_PTU_1_.pdf S7V87B07_PTU_2_.pdf
  16. If you purchased the factory towing package, then the trans cooler is included. Tranny coolor is located in front of the radiator. It is much smaller than the radiator, and can be seen thru the front lower openings - below the front grill. I am attaching a pdf that clearly describes it... S7V72002_Transmission_Cooler.pdf
  17. A quick update for those of you out there... My 2007 SEL AWD has had 3 PTU's replaced thus far. The last one was done in mid-February when the odometer read 9200Km.. Service dept at my FORD dealership have been very supportive. They have been in constant talks with the FORD tech line. I was willing to give FORD one more try in order to resolve this issue, otherwise my next step was to involve CAMVAP (http://camvap.ca/eng/consumers_guide.htm) for those living in Canada. CAMVAP is a Canadian Government Vehicle Arbitration Plan...If you have a good case, you can bring the Car Manufacturer in front of an Arbitrator to have the issue resolved.... So, last Monday, the conclusion from FORD was that the Front Right Drive Shaft needed replacement. So, on Tuesday off I go to the dealership. The drive shaft and PTU seal were replaced. Thus far, I've put in over 1000Km (took a long trip into the US this weekend) and so far, NO burning smell. Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed..
  18. I am on my 3rd PTU and I still have a leaking problem --> Right Side Front Shaft (same as the other 2 PTU's).. My last PTU was replaced this past Tuesday...Once I got the car back, I made sure that the area around the PTU was cleaned properly - no residual oil anywhere. 2 days ago I smelled a faint trace of burning oil, not as bad as in the past. So today, I decided to ramp up the car and take a look. Well, smal leak in the same spot as before. Back to the dealer tomorrow morning to raise HELL!! This is completely uncomprehensible that a problem like this does not merit a RECALL from FORD. How many more Edges/MKX is it going to take before FORD wakes up??
  19. Hmm..I am starting to wonder about my Edge. Thus far the biggest and ONLY issue has been the PTU (transfer Case). It has been replaced 3 times!!! the last time being this past Tuesday. Well, guess what??!! It's leaking AGAIN --> Right Side Front Shaft..The same location as in the other 2 units.. I can't believe that a simple "seal" has generated these many problems with myself and others. I mean, we are not talking "rocket science" here folks, but a simple seal... My patience is running out. I do not want to become a "guinea" pig until FORD gets the right PTU for my car and the leaking finally stops. Has anyone out there experienced these many replacement PTU's? Besides this "issue", the Edge is a superb vehicle...
  20. Well...I knew it was too good to be true. My 2007 EDGE had the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) replaced a week and a half ago because of the leak on the seal that was going over the exhaust and creating the "burning" smell. For the first couple of days, there was still a residual smell, which I disregarded as some "oil" that could have gotten trap on the engine crossmember... Finally, I decided to stop by the dealer today and requested them to look into this since it is quite impossible for any residual oil to still be trap after close to 2 weeks...To my surprise, I was told that the NEW PTU is also leaking!!! The FORD dealer ended up speaking with the FORD Hotline. The outcome? Change the PTU once more. So, got an appointment in 2 weeks and hopefully this will be IT.. Just wanted to pass on this info to all of you out there...
  21. This is typical of a tire or tires not being properly balanced. It is most noticible between 110-130km/h (65-75mph) where the steering wheel "shakes"... If you travel at slower speeds, the vibration disappears. As mentioned in the previous post, if the dealer is NOT willing to rebalance the tires for you, take them to a local tire shop. Should run you about $10/tire. Good luck..
  22. When tinting windows, the window is never removed. They(tinters) pre-cut the film(tint) on using the ourside of the window as a guide. Once the film is cut to "size", they then applied to the inside part of the window. I have NEVER heard of anyone removing the window for tinting purposes, even some of those back "impossible" to tint windows like the old Corvettes..
  23. For those who have the factory Towing Package, does anyone know where the wiring harness is located on the Vehicle (Pictures)? Is there one? or does one have to start "splicing" wires? If there is a wiring harness, is it a standard harness OR does it require some extra hardware to render it universal?
  24. Does anyone know precisely the location of the "leak" where the "seal" (gasket) has failed? Is the failure(leak) in the output of the front shafts (driver/passenger) or rear driveshaft of the PTU? Things that make you go "Hmmmmm"
  25. Are they replacing the entire PTU (Power Transfer Unit) on your car, or just the faulty seals (Gaskets)? I have read that servicing the faulty seals requires some specialized tools that not all FORD dealerships may have, hence easier to replace the PTU.. If this is a "common" problem with certain 2007 Edge's, do we know which vehicles are at risk of having this problem - i.e. from VIN #'s or Production dates? Do the MKX have this problem? Hmmm, I wouldn't want my transfer case to run out of oil because it leaked out completely and have a major problem getting stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere..Mr. FORD, time for a TSB??
