Can't tell you what is under there but why not get a cargo tray? I installed a hitch for just this reason when we went on vacation. Worked out great to carry the extra gear. And I think it would be a whole lot easier to load than someting on the roof.

Well I am feeling a bit better. These two articles, one at gottabemobile.com and the other at siliconfilter.com specifically mention that the hardware is the same. So hopefully CNET just made an error in reporting the model of the CPU in their article. -
How did you find the Edge handled? I had limited exposure about a month back when we got a foot and a half. Seems the system is going to take some getting used to for me. I could feel the tranny shifting power front to rear, the Audi and Subie we had never gave you that sensation, though I don't think we would get stuck in the Edge it may make me drive a little different. Just wondering what others have noticed.

I don't think so...Ford must have your address on file from the purchase paperwork for things like recalls etc. I don't think this would be any different. Exactly my point. It may be they haven't made a hardware change but we really know nothing right now for sure other than the screens have changed. Again, if the demos were done on new hardware their experiences may not translate to the older systems. Unless these people you spoke to opened the system up and checked the CPU and other chips on the APIM we can't assume our existing units will perform the same. As for all the "worrying", I am an engineer...I like to try to understand things. If you want to take my interest in understanding this system and the changes they made/may have made as worrying that is your issue not mine. What I don't understand is why you continually try to squash any conversations about MFT functionality. All we are doing is trying to discuss what little information we can find on the web regarding these changes. Everything that was posted in the last week has been contrary to what we believed was being done, so with continued searching maybe someone will actually find out something definitive. Or maybe we'll never know, but I don't see the harm in trying to find out more. -
Too bad you are too far away. G/L with the sale

Nice ride! Not sure how much time I would spend trying to get the MFT understood. There are a number of quirks with the current system and there is a new version coming out. Hopefully we will be seeing it in January. Basically they have changed all the screens and have improved the performance (based on the videos from LA Auto show); so I wouldn't get too crazed trying to figure out where the controls are for everything just yet.

I don't think anyone is that invested to make themselves sick. I agree they are trying to fix it and it does appear as if it works in the videos but all inidications of the initial release were good too. And as I pointed out previously there is a lot of conflicting info as to what was done. For quite some time you were sure bSquare was out as well as flash, we now know that isn't true. You also seem to be sure the hardware hasn't changed but one article specifically references another more powerful processor. So my point is that our initial indications that it is a vast improvement in perfromance may not be an apples to apples comparison since they may have made hardware changes. I hope they haven't but if they have the performance on the older systems may not be as good. To your first question...sort of. This isn't a linear relationship but if I pay $10k for a car I am not expecting much and can live with little quirks. -

We don't have a choice but to wait. I am just trying to educate myself on what has been done and have pointed out several inconsistences. And excuse me for getting wound up; maybe the reason I am wound up is I paid $37K+ for a Ford because of this technology. Honestly if it wasn't for this bit of tech I would never have looked at Ford. -

I never said they only updated screens the other poster mentioned this...I just said they may not be able to discuss any other changes due to a contract. Ford is working very hard to make it appear as if this is an upgrade to make it easier for people to use the functionality. Not an upgrade to make it actually function. If Ford really did their due diligence you would think bSquare would be out of the picture all together. But regardless of who Ford may or may not have contracted it is still their responsibility to know that the people involved can actually pull off what they need done. -

I wonder if people contracted to help were required to stick to the corporate line that the system was fine and worked well just needed the screens updated to make it easier to use. Good points. I really hope this rewrite does solve the problems or at least brings us close to what Ford claims it to be. To your point about Ford PM skills...I think it does get difficult to really know what capabilities companies have. I know in my own project work I try to stay with vendors I know have delivered before because anyone can promise the world. All this is new to Ford so they might not know the right questions to ask, but with that said since the first version was a failure you would think they would have been more diligent in their vetting process. -
Same to you and everyone else. Hope everyone has a safe happy holidays!

I guess what has me feeling uneasy is one article mentioning the CPU to be the iMX51 but I could swear the original APIM was an iMX31. Since the demos have been on 2013 models they may have made a change to the CPU to help and that could be why the responsiveness looks so much better. Normally I would chalk it up to someone getting a detail wrong but it seems nothing with this rewrite is clear. Seems everything we thought Ford was doing they weren't. I did send an email to the guy who wrote the article mentioning the iMX51 but he is out of the office on vacation. -

Did anyone get a chance to try the faster SD card to see if it made any difference? Also found another deal on SD cards if anyone is interested. (2) Sandisk 16GB Class 10 SD cards for $45. -

Just before the section saying Challenge: "We were responsible for importing, adjusting the layout and implementing new features while working along with bSquare developers and Microsoft team members that mainly focused on updating external .as files so we could work on the .fla files in parallel." -

Oh man...now I am back to being pessimistic on this update. According to that write up flash is still an integral part and maybe just as important so is bSquare??? What was Ford thinking keeping them in the mix? At least he did mention some of the processing was pushed to the video card which will help but makes me wonder if this will be a big enough step to make this thing run efficiently will all the features Ford promised. -
Bump...would like to get some space back...anyone interested? Send me your offers.

You sir will never be offered a ride by me. Got to watch the video last night with sound and am starting to get hopeful about the improvements. I really didn't want to because I am afraid of being dissapointed. I just hope the unit in the video was stock hardware and not that MX51 CPU one article mentioned. -

This is the pic I saw showing the three stages though it does show cooled seats so maybe this is a Lincoln only feature? I did find this video of the new interface. I don't have speakers at work but the speed does seem like a big improvement. -

Did anyone else notice that the pictures of the HVAC screens show that the heated seats are three stage rather than the current two stage? -

I would hope not but things in the OEM auto world do seem to take a long time. The CPU they are using was released in 2007 so maybe this whole thing was started back then and that is the data they had available at the time. I know there is a date on the SD card indicating 2010 but maybe that is just when Telenav completed the data pack??? The more I read about the update the more excited I get....I just really hope I don't get let down. -
Glad you're no longer lurking...welcome.

So if that article is right they are actually changing the map data to Navteq which is the same company that supplies maps to Garmin which tends to be regarded as having the most reliable data. This would be nice but I hope the data itself isn't old. Also does anyone know how these systems work? Meaning if you get you maps from Navteq do they also supply the code to do routing or is it up to the end user to generate this? I know we have seen some extremely questionable routes so far. -
Back in October we got our first snow storm and only got to drive the Edge a little and can already tell it will take some getting used to. My previous ride was a Subaru Legacy GT which did very well in the snow but our other car is an Audi A4 that does even better. What I immediately noticed with the Edge is you can feel the transfer of power where both the subie and Audi it is basically undetectible. You just point and it goes, there is very little drama. The only drama in the subie was due to a large rear sway that made it tail happy at times. The Edge did fine pulling through the snow curl and I don't think I am at risk of getting stuck but it will take a little getting used to the shift of power.

Most people I know that have added CAI have actually lost mpg's mainly because they like the sound of the intake and tend to keep the revs up to hear it.

Was just reading up on the expected new software and have more questions. Several sources mention an 8GB USB drive to do the install. If I remember correctly the flash drive on the APIM is only 2GB, so why would you need 8? Is Ford just offering up this drive as an extra gift? Seems like they could have saved a lot of money with 2GB sticks. Also this CNET article specifically mentions that the processor is a Freescale i.MX51but I could swear the one currently in the MFT is the i.MX31which is much older and slower. Can anyone confirm either of these CPU's? From what I remember the 31 is running at 400MHz and can top out a little over 500, but the 51 runs at 600-800, that is a significant difference. Also noticed in this article that they confirm that new map data will be supplied but also mention that the source of the data is a different company, Navteq. Does anyone know who the current supplier is and have you heard of this change?
