Ha! Off road is fun but you don't have trees suddenly jumping out in front of you like cars and pedestrians do on the street. Different skills perhaps but just as challenging.

I still wave to most well behaved sport bikes. The ones I don't are the "squids" (contraction of "squirrely kids") that are doing stupid things like racing, wheelies, stoppies and other stunts on public streets. BTW, I am very much "old school" but not on a hog... I've been riding Gold Wings for over 30 years. We like to tease Harley riders about their oil leaks and they tease us about our Tupperware bikes but it's all fun. It doesn't really matter what you ride as long as you ride.
-
I generally wave while riding the bike (except for scooters and squids on crotch rockets) but was completely surprised at getting a wave in the Mustang a couple of times and have never seen a wave while in the Edge.

Will it fit? No. It's designed for 2011 through 2014 V6 Edge according to K&N's site. Will it work? Again, no. It might give you a little extra horsepower at wide open throttle and it certainly sounds different but it doesn't do anything for day to day driving.

When we were buying our Sorento, the salesman was bragging about the advanced electronics... when I asked how to program the memory seats and mirrors to match the separate remote fobs, he said he'd never heard of such a feature. I miss things like that from the Edge or even our Envoy before it. I guess what is considered "advanced electronics" is different depending on what you're used to.

Yes, we had the keypad but never used it. The first time we chalked up as a fluke so we didn't think the keypad would be needed. By the second time we were already shopping replacement vehicles so didn't care. But you're right - it's a great idea that should be on more vehicles, even those with normal keys.
-
That's the way it's supposed to be but we had two instances of our 2013 Edge (with IA) locked while running and key fob inside vehicle. In one case we had an extra key along, in the other we had to call AAA to come open it. The first time we thought it was a fluke. The second time was shortly before we got rid of it so we didn't bother having it checked by the dealer.

Are you happy with Edge? Would you buy Edge again?
TheWizard replied to t0lkman's topic in Owner Impressions
That was my first thought as well but you would think the dealer would have noticed that (then again, I may be expecting too much of some of the dealers). -
Very enjoyable read. Been there, done that and can sympathize with the frustration. The Omega Ω symbol represents ohms (resistance). It can be used for continuity - zero ohms means there is no resistance between the two probes (therefore there is continuity between them). There are different ranges so that you can measure resistance of single ohms, hundreds of ohms, thousands of ohms, etc. with greater accuracy. Most digital multimeters also have a separate continuity setting. It is really just an ohmmeter except that it beeps when there is continuity to simplify testing without having to look at the meter reading. A fuse can look good even though it is blown so a continuity test is the most reliable way to determine if a fuse is good - without continuity, no current can flow through the fuse so it is blown.

True... I'm waiting for the "it's a safety issue and there should be a recall" comment to come next. Considering that SYNC 3 had to be rewritten for a completely different operating system, it's not at all surprising that some features could be missing or function somewhat differently. Blackberry's QNX is a UNIX-like system with a multi-part kernel that divides functions into separate servers. The original SYNC from Microsoft was based on a version of Windows CE which uses a single kernel. Operating system calls are very different between the two, forcing a substantial rewrite of the code.

air intake waste of money on edge
TheWizard replied to Matt Ives's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Sorry but that simply flies in the face of physics. This is not a ram-air system - the engine only draws whatever air it needs to fill the cylinders and adds the appropriate amount of fuel to the mix. Having less restriction in the intake will not make a stock engine draw more air unless the original intake was too restrictive. The stock intake is actually quite good and can easily provide all the air the engine needs. The only possible difference is having a lower temperature air charge (denser air) but even that is unlikely considering how the stock intake is configured. I seriously doubt K&N's claim of horsepower gains, and even if it is true it would be at wide open throttle at 5,800 RPM. How often do you drive your Edge like that? Actual dyno testing on Mustangs has shown that a low restriction air filter and CAI provides exactly zero benefit unless combined with other modifications. That's in a car with similar engine (Cyclone V6) and a huge aftermarket of performance upgrades... what chance does a people hauler like the Edge have? Look and sound? Sure. Power and mileage? Not a chance of anything perceptible in normal driving. If you want a performance boost, save the $300 and use it to buy non-ethanol fuel. -
Global Open - windows
TheWizard replied to Lance Moss's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
I was wondering about that... the manual isn't very clear, it just has that separate note after all the other stuff about the power windows. -

The 2013 Edge has pinch protection... they call it "bounce-back". From the 2013 Edge Owner's Manual: -
air intake waste of money on edge
TheWizard replied to Matt Ives's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Agreed. A CAI on a modern stock (untuned) engine is a waste of money unless you just want the sound it produces. Otherwise, it does nothing at all to improve performance or mileage. Anyone who thinks they felt an improvement is just wishful thinking to justify the purchase. Sure, they could make a big difference on older carburetted engines but electronic controls on fuel injected vehicles control the air/fuel mixture very precisely and modern intakes already have high flow characteristics. Now, if you do other things (like tune, exhaust, etc.) then a CAI can be a useful part of that setup but on a stock Edge? No. Look at it his way... if a manufacturer could make any noticeable improvement in fuel economy with some plastic tubing and a filter, don't you think they would be all over that to boost their CAFE rating? I will admit that I like to replace the stock filter with a dry reusable one just for the convenience of being able to clean and reuse rather than replace. But I put the reusable filter in the stock air box. -
Actually, it's not the orange colored fluid that's the problem... it's Rain-X fluid specifically. Prestone makes an orange fluid that is safe for the sensors but there's a class action law suit against Rain-X for their specific formulation that damages certain types of sensors. Those types of sensors are found in German brands (BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes) and Chrysler products. Ford sensors are not affected.

normcloutier is correct... turn off recirculation, turn off A/C, set temperature low (at least as low as the outside temp to prevent heat), and select the dash vents as the output. It's probably not labeled "Vent" but it's the setting that blows air through the dash vents usually designated by an icon that shows an arrow pointing at the upper body: Do not select defrost as that will activate the air conditioning even when you have it off. The A/C is used to dry the air to the windshield for defrosting.

There are a few brands that sell "summer" washer fluid that is designed specifically to dissolve bug guts rather than for freeze protection. It is very useful in those situations where bug guts are the primary concern and you expect to use it up before winter. Otherwise, just check the freeze temperature listed on the label to ensure you get one that can handle the cold in your area. If none of them will work (-40 is about as low as most will go), go to the paint section of your local home improvement or hardware store and buy some methyl alcohol to add to the -40 fluid. Methyl alcohol has a freezing point of -143F or -97C so you could use it even at the south pole.

No driver climate option on right 4.2¨ display
TheWizard replied to Damir Čolak's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
I'm confused... if you never know what temperature you want then why do you include steps to look up and find the temperature information and again the same thing for the fan information? The steps should be look for temperature button, press plus if I'm cold or minus if I'm hot, find fan button, press plus if too slow or minus if too loud. And the buttons are in a straight line but they have a distinct trim between them so they are not particularly difficult to distinguish once you're accustomed to their location... the left one is your temperature, the middle one the fan speed and a passenger can take care of their own temperature on the right switch. I have found that the voice commands work well for climate control when needed - far better than they work for phone control. You can say "climate temperature increase" (or decrease) and "climate fan increase" (or decrease) along with "climate max AC on" (or off). If you say "climate temperature x degrees" and x is between 15 and 29 it will be Celsius; between 60 and 85 it will be Fahrenheit. But really, the automatic climate control does a very good job of handling heating and cooling functions so once you find a comfortable setting you should be able to leave it alone almost all the time. I can't remember the last time I changed either the temperature or the fan speed. -
Almost all commercially available windshield washer fluid is actually windshield washer antifreeze that is good to -40 degrees. So it's not a case of Ford trying to sell you something - they want to ensure you don't put plain water in the container because when it freezes it will damage components. But you don't have to use any Ford (or Motorcraft) branded washer fluid... just go to your local store and buy whatever brand of fluid you want. It will say on the bottle how low a temperature it can handle.

WSS-M14P19-A is a specification number not a part number. A specification is a document listing the required properties of replacement parts and fluids. For example, WSS-M2C945-A is the specification for engine oil for the 3.7 V6 engine. It says things like the oil should be SAE 5W20 synthetic blend but it does not specify a brand name and you can't buy any product using that number without cross referencing the specifications to an actual product such as Motorcraft or Mobil 1 oil. Likewise, you will be unable to buy washer fluid using just its specification number - even at the dealer.

I'm not sure if this is a serious question, but I'll bite... The "blue water" is windshield washer fluid that is available from any auto parts store, dollar stores and most grocery stores (yes, and Walmart). I don't think Ford sells a premix washer fluid - they only have concentrate that must be mixed with water in the correct proportions. Most dealers don't even carry that. Every dealer I've been to just carries the same stuff you can buy anywhere because the Ford concentrate is inconvenient and expensive. There is no difference between various brands that would make a Ford or Motorcraft branded fluid even remotely worth looking for. The concentrate is part #ZC-32-B for the 32 ounce container that costs about $10 and makes 64 ounces when diluted (with distilled water that you buy separately). That 64 ounces would cost you only about $3 everywhere else.

Are you happy with Edge? Would you buy Edge again?
TheWizard replied to t0lkman's topic in Owner Impressions
I was using the inside door lock switch because I had no information about the correct usage of the outside handle. In many parking lots I found the ambient noise masked the sound of the door locks. I don't think the parking lights flash when you use the inside switches but I did see them flash when I used the buttons on the remote. It's not a big deal but certainly not intuitive for someone who doesn't have a manual. Yes, the sport mode does hold gears longer and delays upshifts. That's part of the problem... it delayed upshifts even when I had already used the paddle. If they're going to provide manual control paddles then they should actually control the transmission manually rather than just continuing to wind up to higher RPM before shifting. If Ford intended the sport mode to always shift later and more firmly then the paddles are just a pointless deception. One other thing I noticed was the wipers. I don't know when they switched from both wipers moving the same direction to the current setup of the wipers moving outward from the middle but they should have improved the strength of the arms and blades at the same time. They look like they wobble through the entire stroke. During a short run through heavy rain I started to wonder whether they would even remain attached because of the way they were flopping around. Still overall, I feel it's a big improvement over the prior model. I agree that it looks very much like the Hyundai Santa Fe but I don't mind that at all. Most of the vehicles in this class look quite similar. -
Are you happy with Edge? Would you buy Edge again?

I rented a CUV last week which turned out to be a '16 Edge with only 5 miles on it. I was not pleased about the prospect because of my previous experience with our '13 but was pleasantly surprised with the improvements that have been made in the new model. The seats are much more comfortable, they finally put all the common audio and climate controls on real buttons and knobs (rather than buried in some menu on the touch screen), they've returned to a mechanical turn signal switch that doesn't always stay in the neutral position, and a number of other minor annoyances have been eliminated or at least improved. I'm still not sure I would ever buy another Edge but now I might consider it. That said, there are some things that did not impress me. The keyless door locking is awkward - when you pull the handle to ensure the doors are locked, they unlock! There's no visible lock knob like there used to be. Instead there's a little red LED that is completely invisible in daylight. I ended up locking the doors, walking several feet away (with the key) and asking my wife to check that they were locked. I suppose if I had an owner's manual I might have figured out a better way but Avis doesn't include the manual. The "sport" mode of the transmission (I assume that's what the S is for) enables the paddles on the steering wheel but they're a complete waste of time. The transmission doesn't respond immediately to their use and when it finally responds it's still a slush box - no better than when you used to be able to move the floor shifter from L through 2 and then D... pointless except in situations (like snow) where you need a particular gear. Paddles are great on a dual-clutch transmission that is designed for them but otherwise those who want manual shifting should buy a stick rather than pretending to shift an automatic. The jury is still out on the electronic parking brake. It took most of the week to stop trying to press a non-existent parking brake pedal but the electronic brake actually seemed to hold the vehicle in place better than the old mechanical one. No more of that parking on a hill and having the vehicle rock in Park even though the parking brake had been applied. The storage behind the second row seats seemed positively cavernous. I'm not sure if it was really bigger or just an impression but it held all of luggage with ease. We also had three adults in the second row seats comfortably. Very practical. On the other hand, the dash still looks like it stretches into the next county. A little disconcerting at first but you get used to it after a while. -
I had to replace the windshield in my Sorento recently after a stone chip grew into a crack before I could get it in for service. Safelite replaced with OEM after I told them it was "sound absorbing" glass from the factory. No issues with them or the insurance company (The Hartford). It took a couple of extra days to get the glass from the dealer but they did the installation quickly once it arrived. In Florida, the glass has to be replaced without cost (no deductible) if you carry comprehensive insurance coverage.

Been there, done that and I can see how that could get very annoying... it was annoying enough without the extra wipe. But that wouldn't happen very often and there really is no good solution for that situation - even without the courtesy wipe you're going to be using your wipers (and washers) a lot when the spray is that constant.
