Assuming you get the resistors that are designed specifically for turn signal use, you won't have a problem with heat. The resistor is enclosed in a heat sink housing that will get warm but not hot enought that you would find it uncomfortable to touch. The flat back is ideal for using two-sided tape. (These ones are $9 for four on Amazon)

If Reliability is Main Concern...2.0 EcoBoost or 3.5 V6?
TheWizard replied to rob97ag's topic in Buying, Leasing & Ordering
My mistake... I was looking at the Flex and Taurus still using the older 3.5 version until the 2013 model year. I forgot about the Ti-VCT version being used in other models starting in 2011. But the 3.5L has never come in a Mustang. -

TheWizard replied to rob97ag's topic in Buying, Leasing & Ordering
Not exactly... the V6 in recent Mustangs (2011+) has been the 305hp Ti-VCT 3.7L Cyclone engine. It's in the same Duratec family as the 3.5L but it had the twin independent variable cam timing a few years earlier. -
New DRL Bulbs
TheWizard replied to built2prfctn's topic in Glass, Lenses, Lighting, Mirrors, Sunroof (BAMR), Wipers
No, the bulb does not get brighter. The headlight projector has a shutter plate inside that blocks a portion of the light so that you get that distinct light pattern with a sharp horizontal cutoff upper edge. When you switch to high beam, the shutter moves out of the way allowing all of the light from the bulb (actually called a capsule) to shine out the front lens producing a light pattern that is taller and more rounded without that horizontal cutoff. -
Radar Detector Solution
TheWizard replied to built2prfctn's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
You can use a multimeter to check ground. Simply set the meter to the ohms (resistance) or the continuity setting, touch one probe to a known good ground like a dash bolt and then use the other probe to check the wires. When you get 0 ohms or the continuity alert beeps you have found a ground wire. Double check it with the ignition on and off as well as with the lights on and off because some wires will reverse polarity when those are on. -
If Reliability is Main Concern...2.0 EcoBoost or 3.5 V6?

Hate was exactly the word I was looking for because detest was just a little too strong. We had a '13 Edge Limited EcoBoost for not quite 18 months. During that time we put on a little over 15,000 miles. We also had the entire steering system (rack, pump, reservoir and hoses) replaced four times to correct a groaning noise during left turns that returned six months later. MyFord Touch is the most pathetic excuse for a user interface I've ever seen in a car... SYNC I can live with (I have it in my Mustang) despite its tendency to be disobedient. The seats were not particularly comfortable and made of some excuse for leather. Seven (count 'em, seven) recall notices. Marginal lighting and no fog lights. I could go on... It also had it's high points. It's a good looking vehicle with more interior space than you would expect for its size. The ride was comfortable yet the handling was decent. The turbo four had plenty of pep and was capable of reaching the EPA rated mileage if you could resist putting your foot in it. We never felt the need to use higher octane because it ran so well on regular. But the other annoyances had us looking for excuses to drive another vehicle and when the steering noise returned, that was the last straw. We got rid of it within two weeks. -

The EcoBoost runs perfectly well on regular (87 octane) pump gas. We put 15,000 miles on ours before trading it in. Never once put anything other than regular gas in it and it never gave us a moment's trouble. There were plenty of other reasons we grew to hate the Edge but the engine was never one of them. -
2015 Edge Sport Lane Assist
TheWizard replied to built2prfctn's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
In a few decades (if I live that long), I'll probably be so feeble I'll appreciate someone else doing the driving. I was hoping I would be rich enough to have a chauffeur but I'll settle for a computer. -
2015 Edge Sport Lane Assist
TheWizard replied to built2prfctn's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
The autonomous vehicle is still a long way off partly because there are some things the computer simply can't do. For example, in a busy city intersection making a turn can be tricky because pedestrians will take every opportunity to walk in front of you. A human can move the car forward forcing the pedestrians to stop and wait but a computer would just sit there unable to move. There are numerous other examples of the computer being unable to function because it wouldn't take "human" chances due to its "cause no harm" programming. -
2015 Edge Sport Lane Assist
TheWizard replied to built2prfctn's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
Actually, what really scares me is something I saw on the news last night. Apparently Mercedes Benz has created a test tractor-trailer with cruise control that has automatic lane positioning. Once the truck enters the freeway, the cruise control can be set and the truck will maintain speed and lane position (including adjusting for other vehicles) allowing the driver to be completely hands (and feet) free. Does anyone really want truck drivers doing something else (even sleeping) while their 80,000 pound truck rolls down the highway at 65 mph? -
Best 2" Receiver Hitch for 2012 Limited
TheWizard replied to RJG's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
We installed a Hidden Hitch brand class 3 hitch and were very pleased. The fit and finish were excellent and the look is as close to factory as you can get without cutting the lower valance. In fact, about the only thing you see from the back is the receiver itself - all the mounting brackets are well hidden up behind the valance. We bought it online and then took it to a local U-Haul shop to have it installed... 45 minutes and $50 later we were driving away with the new hitch installed. I have used Curt hitches on other vehicles and been similarly pleased but their Edge model isn't quite as well hidden as the Hidden Hitch. -
2015 Edge Sport Lane Assist

Really people? If one can't handle staying in their own lane because they're texting, reading, eating, putting on makeup, shaving, or just plain feeble then they should put away the keys and take a cab or a bus. </rant> -
IMHO, the electronic turn signal switch on recent Edge models absolutely suck! They are an example of Ford trying to fix something that has worked for 60 years or more - the good old mechanical turn signal switch. In any case, the solution for you is instead of pushing the lever in the opposite direction to cancel, push it in the same direction. For example, if you put your right turn signal on and it fails to cancel after the turn, push the lever up (right) again to cancel rather than down (left).

poor customer service My 2011 Ford Edge Smells Like Propane
TheWizard replied to kstroupe's topic in 2011 Edge & MKX
If by "propane" smell you mean something similar to rotten egg smell, it could by catalytic converter related. Many cars will produce that smell during the first couple of hundred miles and then it will disappear only to return if the catalyst gets damaged. There are several causes but the most common are gasoline additives (snake oil) or if someone found a way to get leaded fuel in the tank or overheating the converter. -
No it doesn't. For a CUV it rides and handles pretty well but I have a Mustang and there's no way the Edge is in the same league when it comes to handling.

Home Improvment, after the car has seized up and Jill reveals that the oil light had been on for a couple of days: Tim Taylor: It's a warning light; didn't it occur to you there might be a little problem? Jill Taylor: I thought if there was a problem with the car that the light would get brighter, or there would be a buzzer. Tim Taylor: A buzzer? It's a car, not a game show.

Ford (along with most other manufacturers) hasn't made a real gauge in years. Even in their "sport" cars like the Mustang, the gauges are more like glorified idiot lights. They rise to normal levels after starting and then do not deviate unless something goes wrong (normal fluctuation is completely damped out). I understand that this was done in response to dumbass owners who would repeatedly take their cars in for warranty service because their volt or temp gauge was fluctuating.

'63 Impala 327 convertible. Really nice dark blue with white top but vinyl seats are really painful when left in the sun with the top down. It even had one of those chrome luggage racks on the trunk - not that the trunk wasn't big enough to put several bodies into (for sneaking into the drive-in movie doncha know). Followed by a '67 Mustang 289, a '70 Mustang Grande 302 and a '71 Mustang Boss 351. I laugh when people call my current Mustang a mid-life crisis car... I've always owned pony/muscle cars and besides I'm more than a little past "mid-life". Compared to today? The Boss 351 was always a favorite of mine but I sometimes wonder why. It did the quarter mile in mid-13s, got about 6 mpg on premium gas, couldn't turn a corner or brake to save your life, and had vinyl seats and an 8-track stereo. My '11 Mustang is a 305HP V6 that does the quarter in the mid-13s, gets 29 mpg on regular gas, handles and stops great, has leather seats and air conditioning along with an impressive stereo system. I love it but I still can't help being a little nostalgic about the Boss.

It's called "humor".

I'm a little late to this thread... congratulations on your new job and welcome to Florida. Did you consider the Auto Train? It leaves from Lorton Virginia near Washington DC and ends in Sanford just east of Orlando. You drive your car (or cars) on and then ride in comfort without having to worry about towing or traffic. From Sanford, it's an easy four hour drive to Ft. Myers.
